- Abstract
- The "Screen Design Manual" provides designers of interactive media with a practical working guide for preparing and presenting information that is suitable for both their target groups and the media they are using. It describes background information and relationships, clarifies them with the help of examples, and encourages further development of the language of digital media. In addition to the basics of the psychology of perception and learning, ergonomics, communication theory, imagery research, and aesthetics, the book also explores the design of navigation and orientation elements. Guidelines and checklists, along with the unique presentation of the book, support the application of information in practice.

- Abstract
- The design and development of the Open Agent Architecture (OAA) system has focused on providing access to agent-based applications, through an intelligent, cooperative, distributed, and multimodal agent-based interface. Only the primary user interface agents need run on the local computer, thereby simplifying the task of using a range of applications from a variety of platforms, especially low-powered computers. An important consideration in the design of the OAA was to facilitate the reuse of agents in new and unanticipated applications and to support rapid prototyping. The utility of the agents and tools developed has been demonstrated by their use as infrastructure in unrelated projects

- Abstract
- Hypertext for multi-media and full-text documents is rapidly developed on all fronts. For bibliographic information retrieval the applications are promising but pose several difficulties. Describes work conducted at the School of Library and Information Science at Univ. of Western Ontario the objective of which is to add the capability of a browsing search to an existing OPAC through the use of Windowed Hypertext Interface for Zippy Retrieval and Display (WHIZRD) software. Discusses the underlying retrieval capabilities of the system. Examines design problems and solutions and outlines future enhancements

- Abstract
- Despite the volume of research carried out into the design of database systems and the design of user interfaces, there is little cross-fertilization between the two areas. The control of user interfaces to database systems is, therfore, significantly less advanced than other aspects of DBMS design. As database functionality is used in a wider range of areas, such as design applications, the suitability of the user interface is becoming increasingly important. It is, therefore, necessary to begin applying the knowledge developed by HCI resaerchers to the specialised domain of database systems

- Integrated interfaces to publicly available databases; database query interface for medical information systems; an intergrated approach approach to task oriented database retrieval interfaces; GRADI: a graphical database interface for a multimedia DBMS; cognitive view mechanisms for multimedia information systems; a graphical schema representation for object oriented databases; a conceptual framework for error analysis in SQL interfaces; a browser for a version entity relationship database

- Human-computer interaction is a very important topic in studying computerized information retrieval systems, as it takes into account both the human searchers and the information system features. This entry surveys the major research streams and applications of interactive information seeking and retrieval. It also presents how the expectations and requirements for interactive information seeking and retrieval have been expanded and what the challenges are ahead for evaluating such systems.

- Abstract
- A new search paradigm, in which the primary user activity is the guided exploration of a complex information space rather than the retrieval of items based on precise specifications, is proposed. The author claims that this paradigm is the norm in most practical applications, and that solutions based on traditional search methods are not effective in this context. He then presents a solution based on dynamic taxonomies, a knowledge management model that effectively guides users to reach their goal while giving them total freedom in exploring the information base. Applications, benefits, and current research are discussed.

- Abstract
- A framework for describing the design space of human computer interfaces is presented which relates interface modes, channels, media and styles for both input and output interfaces. Language and action modes are said to be supported through use of the audio, visual and haptic channels. Interface media are derived from the combination of modality and channel. The implications of the framework for interface design are discussed

- Abstract
- Ovid has supported a sophisticated interface for searching bibliographic and full text databases for some time. It is now offering a Web based version of this interface that is capable of accessing Z39.50-compliant OPACs and databases anywhere in the world. The Ovid Web Gateway builds on the Ovid Server, thus allowing for a variety of functions and configurations at user, group and database-specific level. The Web Gateway has a selection of download formats and delivery options

- Abstract
- In an effort to assist users in the identification of significant Internet resources, libraries and librarians have begun to apply established library classification and subject schemes as the organizational framework for accessing and navigating these electronic sources. We will profile selected notable applications of national and international library classification schemes for organizing World Wide Web (WWW) resources as well as sites that have applied controlled vocabularies to facilitate access to selected collections of Net resources. With these and similar efforts as a conceptual foundation, we then focus on the potential application of new and emerging technologies to further enhance use of digital collections, notably intelligent software agents, information visualization techniques, auditory displays and haptic interactive devices. We conclude with a review of significant Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies and computer-based ontologies, and speculate on their potential application for representing, accessing, and navigating digital resources

- Abstract
- With the many choices that can be built into information systems, it is possible to customize such systems for users, based on the tasks that users are accomplishing, on the personal characteristics of users, or a combination of these factors. Reports results of an experiment which detailed logging of use of experimental information systems and was used to determine the optimal configuration of these systems for each user. 4 experimental systems were specially designed and all used a single database of 668 bibliographic records. Tasks were varied, and the cognitive abilities of users were tested to assess one important personal characteristic. Results showed that it was possible to create an optimal configuration to match the cognitive abilities of users, but that it was more difficult to assess which configuration was the best match for specific tasks. The person in task interaction proved to be the least powerful indicator of design configurations. These results suggest that usable information systems can be created for users by careful analysis of the interaction of design features with personal characteristics such as cognitive abilities

- Abstract
- Compares and contrasts online searching on DataStar using the 'classic' command language, with access via the more recent Web interface (DataStar Web). The search functionality of the 2 interfaces is not identical, although both use the same retrieval software and access the same databases. Many of the differences affect retrieval effectiveness and may trip up novice and experienced searchers alike

- Abstract
- The GUI is impacting library application software. Despite this trend, user satisfaction with the GUI has not been documented. The Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research Library, USA, undertook a study to determine user satisfaction with the new GUI based Dynix Marquis, as compared with the Dynix Classic OPAC. The study included a survey assessing user satisfaction and a review of overall usage. Survey findings show that the GUI based OPAC was preferred by end users over the text based OPAC. Usage reports supported the survey findings with significantly increased usage after migration

- Abstract
- Demonstrates that a mode of interaction, analogous to the optomechanical principles applied in the Peek-a-Boo system, can be applied in computerized retrieval systems to enhance the quality of human-computer interaction radically and increase effectiveness. The MenUSE (Menu based User Search Engine) software has evolved from constructing explicit Boolean combinations of concepts automatically to using an implicit Boolean searching approach, similar to Peek-a-Boo. Thesauri and classification schemes, together with other searchable values, provide the user with views of a database and a means for the recognition and selection of concepts and other parameters by the end user. The resulting filtering model has been implemented for searching the European Parliament's EPOQUE database and for INSPEC. This second application provides illustrations of the technique for this paper
