    Abstract
Once collections of microcomputer software are established in a library, they grow like wildfire, requiring bibliographic control. Control should have been furnished by AACR2, however, Chapter 9, designed to deal with macroor minicomputer software, was difficult to apply to microcomputer software. Responding to demand from the field, a Task Force of ALA's Committee Cataloging: Description and Access devised Guidelines for Using AACR2 Chapter 9 for Cataloging Microcomputer Software, which was approved at the 1984 Midwinter Conference and is now available for purchase from RTSD. The Guidelines deal with three problems raised by application of Chapter 9 to microcomputer software: teminology; description of the physical manifestation of an item; and notes describing related hardware. A fourth problem concerns which materials are covered by the Guidelines. Each of these is explored and evaluated.

    Abstract
Covers the process of downloading from an On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) to an MS-DOS microcomputer. Describes the purpose of downloading, steps to achieve this an postprocessing the captured data to produce a report using wordprocessors or text oriented programming languages. Offers advice on importing to applications software. Suggests that the OPAC community needs a universal MARC reformatting program

    Abstract
This discussion of Personal Bibliographic Systems (PBS) features deals with microcomputer programs that manage the input, storage, retrieval, and output of bibliographic references. Although various partially overlapping terminologies may be encountered in the literature such programs as EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager-three of the most popular PBS-have by now become household names in academic circles. Several dozens of similar programs exist, each with its own peculiar combination of desirable and less appropriate features. The names of over 100 PBS examples are listed in Appendix 2.

    Abstract
One of the major problems facing systems for Computer Aided Design (CAD), Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications today is the lack of interoperability among the various systems. When integrating software applications, substantial di culties can arise in translating information from one application to the other. In this paper, we focus on semantic di culties that arise in software integration. Applications may use di erent terminologies to describe the same domain. Even when appli-cations use the same terminology, they often associate di erent semantics with the terms. This obstructs information exchange among applications. To cir-cumvent this obstacle, we need some way of explicitly specifying the semantics for each terminology in an unambiguous fashion. Ontologies can provide such specification. It will be the task of this paper to explain what ontologies are and how they can be used to facilitate interoperability between software systems used in computer aided design, architecture engineering and construction, and geographic information processing.

    Abstract
In this article, the sixth in a series on microcomputer software for information storage and retrieval, test results of nine programs are presented and various properties and qualities of these programs are discussed. We discuss additional programs for information storage and retrieval and for text retrieval from several of the various categories which have been looked at in previous instalments. On new (secondary) type of ISR software is defined as administrative software. The program review in this issue are BRS-Search, dtSearch, InfoBank, Micro-OPC, Q&A, STN-PFS, Strix, TINman and ZYIndex. All but dtSearch and ZYIndex can be regarded as primarily classical retrieval packages; Q&A boasts comprehensive administrative features as well; dtSearch and ZYIndex are indexing programs. For ZYIndex a new Windows version has been tested. All other programs run under MS-DOS. For each of the nine programs about 100 facts and test results are tabulated. All the programs are individually discussed as well

    Abstract
Traces the development of the AGRIS (Agricultural Research Information System) and CARIS (Current Agricultural Research Information System) systems developed by the US Food and Agricultural Organization's Library and Documentation Systems Division and describes the AGRAIN database software package, using Micro CDS/ISIS software, designed to provide national agricultural libraries with a tool to develop national databases compatible with AGRIS; to prepare AGRIS input on a microcomputer for submission to the FAO's main database in Vienna that is used to produce the printed AGRINDEX; and to receive and incorporate data from the AGRIS main database and other compatible systems

    Abstract
Contribution to an issue devoted in part to microcomputer software: Proceedings of the Resources and Technical Services Division (RTSD). Audio-Visual Committee's programme held during the 1988 Annual Conference of the American Library Association. Based on a paper by Susan Nesbitt, 'Microcomputer software cataloguing: a practical approach' which was published in Cataloguing Special Materials: Critiques and Innovations edited ba Sanford Berman. Discusses issues to be addressed before cataloguing a new format. Suggestions are offered based upon the Hennepin County Library experience. Discusses types of information to be included in the physical description and notes for nonprint material allowed by AACR2. Describes the assiging of subject headings to software.

    Abstract
Discusses the characteristics and functions of the textual database management program DB/TextWorks 2.0 of Inmagic Inc. Operating on a PC microcomputer in a Windows environment (stand alone or network), it combines the advantages of full text retrieval systems and the flexibility of databases. Presents an evaluation of the program and examines its use in libraries with the DB/TextWorks Library guide kit which proposes database models conceived for various functions; acquisitions, cataloging, loans, OPAC, serials management, and interlibrary loan

    Abstract
The many techniques developed for the storage and retrieval of textual information have also become available for the storage and retrieval of graphics and images in various kinds of database systems. Of the many existing software packages for information storage and retrieval, a fast growing number offer the possibility of storing images. As part of a software evaluation project, criteria for the evaluation of image capabiblities of retrieval software packages are listed and these criteria are used to report on the graphical capabilities of the following software packages: Advision, askSam, Cardbox for Windows, FolioViews, IdeaList, Inmagic-Image, KAware, Personal Librarian and ZyImage

    Abstract
Describes and compares thesaurus development and management software packages and modules, and one service bereau operation. A major emphasis is placed on the extent to which each package provides assistance both in automation of repetitive work and in prevention of errors. Hardware requirements and software compatibility are also considered. Primary attention is given to specialised thesaurus requirements

    Abstract
Assessment of Computer Based Training (CBT) are difficult to generalize, but some evidence suggests that CBT can be more cost effective that traditional classroom teaching, with comparable student learning. Reviews the current literature and describes an empirical study of CBT effectiveness for teaching microcomputer software in a required college level business class. Students were divided into an experimental class (using CBT) and a control group (using traditional lectures). An analysis of inflential learning factors could find no meaningful differences between these 2 groups. The statistical results of 6 different course performance measures indicated that the experimental students performed as well as the control studuents on homework assignements and hand-on skill tests, and were equally satisfied with their training

    Abstract
For courses in Expert Systems, Knowledge-Based Systems, Artificial Intelligence or Decision Support Systems, this book embodies the fact that expert systems now extend beyond the field of computer science into such areas as engineering and business. It offers a comprehensive understanding of expert systems and shows their application to real world problems. The material is presented in such a way that the student needs no previous experience in computers or computer programming. The book addresses all of the topics necessary to understand, build, validate, and implement expert systems - with many examples, exercises, and problems. A working version of EXSYS - a microcomputer-based expert systems software program - is packaged with the text.

    Abstract
The delivery of library reference service can be practically supplemented through the appropriate incorporation and use of software tools commonly reffered to an expert system. The level of support such systems can affort the reference service organisation is dependent on the degree of complexity characteristic of the rule-based programming techniques used to develop a particular system and the size of its knowledge data base. Since most expert systems are designed to simulate the process of problem-solving practiced by an expert in a given field, an expert system designed to fully emulate library reference work must have the potential to respond to a wide subject range of questions with varying degrees of response adequacy. Describes a microcomputer-based reference expert-type system.
