    Abstract
    Subject classifications and thesauri have become more important than ever in the Web environment. Efforts made to organize information into subject classifications, or taxonomies, offer users the opportunity to substantially improve the effectiveness of their search and retrieval activities. This article continues earlier research an the development of a new definition of the field of information science and the creation of a "map" of the field showing subjects central to it and their relationships to those an the periphery. A case study describes the creation of a new classification structure (taxonomy) for the Information Science Abstracts (ISA) database, aiming to reflect and accommodate the rapid and continued technological and market changes affecting the information industry today and into the future. Based an a sample of some 3,000 ISA abstracts, two validation experiments were conducted by a three-member team comprising a database editor, a reference librarian, and an abstractor-indexer, who represent three of the major communities within the information science field. In the first experiment, the sample of abstracts was classified according to the proposed new taxonomy; alter analysis of the data and revision of the taxonomy, it was revalidated and fine tuned in a second experiment. Indexer consistency measures obtained in this study were significantly higher than those found in previous studies. The taxonomy resulting from this research employs the concepts, definition, and map of information science previously developed. It presents them in an organized hierarchical view of the field and thus makes a significant contribution to information science.

    Abstract
    Contribution to an issue devoted to serials and reference services. Aims to acquaint reference librarians with the information provided by the United States Newspaper Program and its state projects, and to describe the methods by which this information can be assessed. USNP participants are working toward the cataloguing and detailed location and holdings description of virtually every newspaper in the US. This information is resulting in the creation of a comprehensive newspaper reference tool. The USNP information is available on-line via bibliographic utilities; it is also available in an off-line product, the United States Newspaper Program National Union List. To use this information, librarians need to possess some knowledge of the scope and complexities of the bibliographic description and union listing of newspapers.

    Abstract
    Presents a detailed evaluation of the CD-ROM data base Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), published by Library Association Publishing Ltd in partnership with SilverPlatter Information Inc. Describes the SilcerPlatter search software and gives results of test searches carried out using the CD-ROM and DIALOG on-line versions of LISA. The annual cost of subscribing to LISA on CD-ROM is 995 US dollars or 750 dollars to subscribers of other SilverPlatter data bases. LISA on CD-ROM will be of most interest to institutions which make heavy use of the on-line version and are not discouraged by the low updating frequency.

    Abstract
    Index Medicus, the abstract periodical published by the National Library of Medicine, could until recently only be consulted either in its printed version or on-line (Medline). Several versions of Medline on CD-ROM are now available, and the Biomedical Working Group of VOGIN (the Dutch Association of Users of Online Information Systems) has prepared this detailed comparison. Although CD-ROM is becoming more popular, many people are still unfamiliar with the new medium, and a number of authors have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of CD-ROM when compared with its on-line and printed equivalents.

    Abstract
    In January 2010, the German National Library discontinued the print version of the national bibliography and replaced it with an online journal. This was the first step in a longer process of redefining the National Library's bibliographic services, leaving the field of traditional media - e. g. paper or CD-ROM databases - and focusing on publishing its data over the WWW. A new business model was set up - all web resources are now published in an extra bibliography series and the bibliographic data are freely available. Step by step the prices of the other bibliographic data will be also reduced. In the second stage of the project, the focus is on value-added services based on the National Library's catalogue. The main purpose is to introduce alerting services based on the user's search criteria offering different access methods such as RSS feeds, integration with e. g. Zotero, or export of the bibliographic data as a CSV or PDF file. Current standards of cataloguing remain a guide line to offer high-value end-user retrieval but they will be supplemented by automated indexing procedures to find & browse the growing number of documents. A transparent cataloguing policy and wellarranged selection menus are aimed.

    Abstract
    A controlled set of searches have been conducted by a group of searchers, at Manchester Polytechnic Library, on a trial subset of the British National Bibliography (BNB) data base on both CD-ROM and on-line. Various measures of search effectiveness and effiency were examined in relation to the effect of the differing user interface, including recall, precision, search time, user satisfaction and other more subjective factors. Discusses the potential for further research on the evaluation of CD-ROM.

    Abstract
    A comparison of Chinese and Western bibliography reveals many differences. The purpose of traditional Chinese bibliography is to organize documents in a reasonable and valuable way, which essentially reflects the value and importance of human beings and their culture.     Abstract
    To assist the IFLA Bibliography Section in gathering more comprehensive information on selection criteria used by national bibliographic agencies in preparing their countries' national bibliography, the Section crafted a survey that the Section chair and the Oslo Programme chair sent electronically and in print form. With the exponential availability of Web and other digital resources, the Section felt a critical need to address how national bibliographic agencies were incorporating these resources into the national bibliography. In preparation for the Section's Programme during the 71st IFLA World Library and Information Congress, the survey was sent to forty-four national libraries and bibliographic agencies in Europe. We restricted dissemination of the survey to European countries, in line with the Section's strategy to plan its programmes in ways that focused on what was happening in the area of the world where the IFLA Congress was being convened. This paper gives an analysis of the data submitted in the responses.
