    Abstract
Most commercial on-line information retrieval systems are not designed to service end users and, therefore, have often built front-ends to their systems specifically to serve the end user market. These front ends have not been well accepted, mostly because the underlying systems are still difficult for end users to use successfully in searching. New techniques, based on statistical methods, that allow natural language input and return lists of records in order of likely relevance, have long been available from research laboratories. Presents 4 prototype implementations of these statistical retrieval systems that demonstrate their potential as powerful and easily used retrieval systems able to service all users. The systems consist of: the PRISE system; the CITE system; the Muscat system; and the News Retrieval Tool

    Abstract
The study explains the perceived differences in retrieval patterns between the on-line PAIS (Public Affairs Information Services) data base on DIALOG (File 49) and PAIS on CD-ROM. Describes the search strategies applied to the 2 data bases and the result obtained. Concludes that if users can bring to PAIS on CD-ROM search expertise gained elsewhere, then, in the Expert mode, having gained sufficient undestanding of specific search techniques and file structure, the motivated searcher can achieve results equivalent to the results of searching PAIS on DIALOG

    Abstract
Presents a brief report on a study, carried out by the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, to investigate the techniques used for evaluating OPACs: to explore and assess different data gathering methods in studying information seeking behaviour at the on-line catalogue; and to examine how a transaction logging facility could be enhanced to serve as a more effective diagnostic tool. Abstract
Proceedings of the 5th TREC-confrerence held in Gaithersburgh, Maryland, Nov 20-22, 1996. Aim of the conference was discussion on retrieval techniques for large test collections. Different research groups used different techniques, such as automated thesauri, term weighting, natural language techniques, relevance feedback and advanced pattern matching, for information retrieval from the same large database. This procedure makes it possible to compare the results. The proceedings include papers, tables of the system results, and brief system descriptions including timing and storage information

    Abstract
Reports the findings of an experiment designed to compare on-line data bases and equivalent printed versions in 1 area of reference services, the answering of ready reference questions. 68 reference librarians searched for answers to the same set of 12 questions using either print or on-line sources. Details of the questions are given. In the case of conceptual questions on-line proved faster than print, particularly for 2-concept questions, and the increased speed was not at the expense of accuracy. In the case of factual questions, print sources proved to be considerably faster than on-line. Suggests 2 guidelines: when bibliographic information is available in both print and on-line formats, on-line should be the tool of choice, particularly for multi-concept questions; simple factul questions can be answered more quickly using printed sources.

    Abstract
Examines how techniques in the field of natural language processing can be applied to the analysis of text in information retrieval. State of the art text searching programs cannot distinguish, for example, between occurrences of the sickness, AIDS and aids as tool or between library school and school nor equate such terms as online or on-line which are variants of the same form. To make these distinction, systems must incorporate knowledge about the meaning of words in context. Research in natural language processing has concentrated on the automatic 'understanding' of language; how to analyze the grammatical structure and meaning of text. Although many asoects of this research remain experimental, describes how these techniques to recognize spelling variants, names, acronyms, and abbreviations

    Abstract
Identifies the interest in questions of classified catalogues generated by the development of on-line catalogues, establishing a difference between 2 large areas: free access to information items in a systematic arrangement and expressing the contents of books by means of notational symbols in a classification system in a local catalogue. Examines the elements and structure of classification systems, the internationally important universal classifications, the procedures for book display and systematic processing in West German public libraries and exhibtion techniques in West German academic libraries. Covers universal and faceted classifications, as well as classification systems in on-line catalogues

    Abstract
The study of faceted classification systems has primarily been directed towards application for precombined catalogues or bibliographies, not so much for use in post coordinated retrieval systems. Argues that faceted classification systems in some respects are superior to other techniques of on-line retrieval as far as facet and concept analysis is combined with an expressive notational system in order to guide a form of retrieval which will use Boolean operators (for combining the facets regardless of one special citation order) and truncation for retrieving hierarchically different sets of documents. This point of view is demonstrated by 2 examples. The 1st one uses a short classification system derived from B. Buchanan and the 2nd is built upon the classification system used by Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA). Further discussion is concerned with some possible consequences which could be derived from a retrieval with PRECIS strings
"Online retrieval" conjures up a very different mental image now than in 1991, the year this article was written, and the year Tim Berners-Lee first revealed the new hypertext system he called the World Wide Web. Gödert shows that truncation and Boolean logic, combined with notation from a faceted classification system, will be a powerful way of searching for information. It undoubtedly is, but no system built now would require a user searching for material on "nervous systems of bone fish" to enter "Fdd$ and Leaa$". This is worth reading for someone interested in seeing how searching and facets can go together, but the web has made this article quite out of date.

    Abstract
The development of regional on-line catalogs and in-house information systems for retrieval of references provide examples of the impact of indexing theory and applications on technical processing. More emphasis must be given to understanding the techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of a file, irrespective of whether that file was created as a library catalog or an index to information sources. The most significant advances in classification theory in recent decades has been as a result of efforts to improve effectiveness of indexing systems. Library classification systems are indexing languages or systems. Courses offered for the preparation of indexers in the United States and the United Kingdom are reviewed. A point of congruence for both the indexer and the library classifier would appear to be the need for a thorough preparation in the techniques of subject analysis. Any subject heading list will suffer from omissions as well as the inclusion of terms which the patron will never use. Indexing theory has provided the technical services department with methods for evaluation of effectiveness. The writer does not believe that these techniques are used, nor do current courses, workshops, and continuing education programs stress them. When theory is totally subjugated to practice, critical thinking and maximum effectiveness will suffer.

    Abstract
On-line information retrieval systems often offer their users some means to tune the query to match the level of granularity of the information request. Users can be offered a far greater range of possibilities, however, if documents are indexed with coordinated index concepts. Coordinated index concepts are compound index concepts that function as simple subject descriptores, as in 'cures (headache, aspirin)'. We show the point by giving a functional specification of a query engine that can handle both simple and coordinated index concepts, Boolean combinations, and superconcept expansion. The Condorcet Query Engine, a prototype query engine that can be run over the WWW, demonstrates the feasibility of these ideas. The combination of known and novel techniques ensures a smooth migration path from existing query engines to more advanced engines that handle coordinated index concepts
