- Abstract
- Das Historische Wörterbuch der Philosophie (HWPh), im Zeitraum von 1971 bis 2007 unter Mitwirkung von mehr als 1500 Fachgelehrten entstanden, ist eines der umfassendsten, bedeutendsten und auch erfolgreichsten Publikationsprojekte der jüngeren deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Lexika oder Enzyklopädien basiert das HWPh nicht auf einer Geschichte philosophischer Ideen oder Probleme, sondern auf der Geschichte der philosophischen Begriffe. In 12 Textbänden sowie einem abschliessenden Registerband dokumentiert das Lexikon in 17144 Spalten und rund 6000 Artikeln anhand zahlreicher präziser Belege und Stellenangaben Herkunft und Genese von insgesamt 3670 philosophischen Begriffen und beschreibt den Wandel ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion von ihrem ersten Auftreten bis heute. Das Konzept der begriffsgeschichtlichen Methode macht sowohl synchronisch Stellung und Bedeutung einzelner Begriffe in bestimmten Epochen oder bei bestimmten Philosophinnen und Philosophen als auch diachronisch deren Bedeutungsveränderungen innerhalb der abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte nachvollziehbar. Um die spezifisch philosophische Begriffsarbeit im Kontext des gesamten Wissenschaftssystems zu veranschaulichen, werden zudem auch Begriffe aus angrenzenden Fachgebieten - Theologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik, Soziologie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Politik, Jurisprudenz, Medizin sowie aus den Naturwissenschaften - behandelt.

- Das aktuelle Wissen der Welt im Spiegel einer Weltausstellung: Wie stellt man das dar und wie macht man es Interessierten zugänglich - in der Ausstellung, in Publikationen, im Funk und über das Internet? Was man alles auf einer Weltausstellung an der Schwelle zum dritten Jahrtausend sehen und erfahren kann, sprengt in Fülle und Vielfalt jeden individuell faßbaren Rahmen. Schmitz-Esser zeigt in seinem Buch, wie der Besucher wahlweise in vier Sprachen die Weltausstellung erleben und die Quintessenz davon mitnehmen kann. - Abstract
- Bibliothekarische Sacherschließung stellt zunächst eine praktische Aufgabe dar. Gleichwohl sollte bibliothekarische Sacherschließung als Ganzes und in einem wesentlichen Teilbereich wie der Systematischen Freihandaufstellung auch in ihrer historischen Entwicklung und Bedeutung gesehen werden. Ein bedeutender Aspekt bleibt die notwendige Einordnung in das größere Umfeld, vor allem der Bibliotheksgeschichte, aber auch der Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Schwerpunkte bilden hier die Geschichte der Dezimalmethode mit den Teilbereichen UDK und DDC und die Nachkriegsgeschichte der klassifikatorischen Erschließung an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken Deutschlands, einschließlich der neuen Entwicklung der Verbundarbeit in der Klassifikation. Bedeutend sind weiter die Beispiele für den Vergleich von Aufstellungsklassifikationen als Annäherung an eine zu entwickelnde Methodik. Dabei stellen sich auch Fragen des Inhalts ausgewählter Klassifikationssysteme in historischer Betrachtung. Dies entspricht bereits dem Bibliotheksplan 73, der immerhin Fragen der Bibliotheksgeschichte und der Klassifikation zu den genuinen Bereichen bibliothekswissenschaftlicher Forschung rechnet.

Es geht ihm darum, historische Kenntnisse zu nutzen, um Erfahrungen nachzuvollziehen und Fehler weitgehend zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. So bildet die Einordnung in das größere Umfeld der Bibliotheksgeschichte und der Wissenschaftsgeschichte einen wesentlichen Faktor. Dies erfolgt in Verbindung mit wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen, da der Autor darauf aufbaut, dass die Wissenschaftsgeschichte eine wesentliche Grundlage einer reflektierenden Inhaltserschließungsdiskussion darstellt. Das Werk liefert daher historische Beispiele für die Bedeutung und Definition bibliothekarischer Aufstellungsklassifikationen ebenso wie Grundüberlegungen zur Systematischen Aufstellung einschließlich besonderer Anforderungen und Berücksichtigung von Problemen anhand von Beispielen aus Theorie und Praxis. Das Kapitel über die Geschichte der Systematischen Freihandaufstellung liefert daher Beispiele aus Klosterbibliotheken des Mittelalters bis hin zum Bereich der Privatbibliotheken von Ärzten späterer Zeit. Wichtige internationale Klassifikationen sowie Neuentwicklungen an neueren deutschen Universitätsbibliotheken versieht der Autor allerdings mit kritischen Anmerkungen betreffend die Unterschiede innerhalb von Systematiken. Dem folgt eine Gegenüberstellung von Aufstellungssystematiken bzw. Beispielen für den Vergleich von Aufstellungsklassifikationen. B. Lorenz beweist in seinen "Notizen" als "Wechselspiel" deutlich, wie untrennbar die Geschichte der bibliothekarischen Sacherschließung von der Geschichte der Wissenschaften ist. Letztendlich kommt der Autor übereinstimmend mit Klara Erdei zu dem Schluß, "dass der Online-Katalog nicht den Untergang sondern eher eine Renaissance der bibliothekarischen Klassifikation mit sich bringen kann: eine noch benutzerfreundlichere, vielseitigere Realisierung der systematischen Erschließung und Suche". Das vorliegende Werk ist keine technische Auflistung von formalen, pragmatischen oder strukturellen Fragen und es ist auch keine weitere Darstellung des Wesens der Systematik. Vielmehr ist es dem Autor erfolgreich gelungen, den Fragen der hierarchisch höchst- bzw. hochstehenden Gliederungen und des Inhalts ausgewählter Klassifikationssysteme in historischer Betrachtung nachzugehen."

- Abstract
- Nichts ist wichtiger für die Informationsgesellschaft als das Tempo der Informationsvermittlung. Was zählt, sind die neuesten Neuigkeiten, am besten in "Echtzeit" übertragen: Diesseits aller kulturkritischen Vorbehalte profitiert man mit jeder E-Mail und jedem live gesendeten Fußballspiel von dieser medialen Dynamik. Auch die immer wieder neu ausgerufenen Entdeckungen der Langsamkeit können nichts daran ändern, dass die Informationsgesellschalt nun einmal dem "Gesetz der Beschleunigung" (Paul Virilio) folgt. In der Ausstellung "Vom Boten zum Bit" im Museum für Kommunikation (in Frankfurt am Main) wird vor Augen geführt, welche vor allem nachrichtentechnischen Innovationen sich hinter dieser Beschleunigungstendenz verbergen. Auf kompakte Weise rekonstruiert die Ausstellung in mehreren Stationen die räumliche und zeitliche "Entfesselung der Kommunikation": Am Anfang steht nicht der Bote, der etwa auf dem römischen "Cursus publicus" Nachrichten überbringt, sondern die Trommel einer äthiopischen Dorfgemeinschaft. Über die optischen und elektrischen Telegrafen und Beispielen der frühen Rundfunk- und Telefontechnik gelangt die zunächst arg geraffte Zeitreise rasch zur Gegenwart, die im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht. Hier wird das Ausmaß der medialen Entfesselung von Raum und Zeit zuallererst sichtbar: Fotos zeigen, wie CNN überall in den Wohnzimmern flimmert; drei Papierstapel von dpa veranschaulichen eindrucksvoll die Verzehnfachung der täglichen Informationsmenge seit 1949; und angesichts der Entwicklung vom so genannten Intelligenzblatt bis, zur Echtzeit-Börse wird erkennbar, dass Zeit im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes Geld geworden ist. Was die Ausstellung leider etwas vermissen lässt, sind originelle und provokative Thesen. Zwar wird am Ende noch auf Virilios Beschleunigungsgesetz und Joshua Meyrowitz' These von der durch die elektronischen Medien erzeugten Ortlosigkeit hingewiesen. Auch das Problem der Uber- schreitung moralischer' Grenzen,; etwa bei der Berichterstattung zum "Geiseldrama" von Gladbeck, wird benannt. insgesamt aber kommt die Ausstellung nicht über McLuhans berühmte These vom globalen Dorf hinaus und erzählt relativ distanzlos eine eindeutige Fortschrittsgeschichte. Da dieser Fortschritt aber zugleich faszinierend ist, ist die Ausstellung alles andere als langweilig. Und auch wenn Provokationen fehlen mögen, überzeugt doch die professionelle und informative Präsentation der Materialfülle. Das ist deshalb bemerkenswert, weil die Schau im Rahmen einer neuen Kooperation zwischen der Uni, versität Mainz und dem Museum für Kommunikation von' Mainzer Publizistik-Stu-denten konzipiert und organisiert worden. ist. Wenn das Ziel der Studenten nicht zuletzt auch die Sammlung von Berufspraxis war, ist diese Ausstellung mehr als gelungen, und man wünscht sich weitere Kooperationen dieser Art.

- Abstract
- Time Magazine reihte ihn unter die hundert wichtigsten Personen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Die Harvard University verlieh ihm das Ehrendoktorat für die Entdeckung "der bedeutsamsten mathematischen Wahrheit des Jahrhunderts". Er gilt allgemein als der größte Logiker seit Aristoteles. Sein Freund Einstein ging, nach eigener Aussage, nur deshalb ans Institut, um Gödel auf dem Heimweg begleiten zu dürfen. Und John von Neumann, einer der Väter des Computers, schrieb: "Gödel ist tatsächlich absolut unersetzlich. Er ist der einzige Mathematiker, von dem ich das zu behaupten wage." Dieses Buch ist eine leichtverdauliche, einfache und anschauliche Einführung in Gödels Leben und Werk, gedacht für jene, die sich für die menschlichen und kulturellen Aspekte der Wissenschaft interessieren. Ausgangspunkt des Buches waren die Vorbereitungen zu einer Ausstellung über Kurt Gödel aus Anlass seines hundertsten Geburtstags. Eine Ausstellung hat etwas von einem Spaziergang an sich, und gerade das wollen wir bieten: einen Spaziergang mit Gödel. Albert Einstein genoss solche Spaziergänge sehr. Man kann also Gödel genießen.
