    Abstract
Ontologies may be considered knowledge organization systems since the elements interact in a consistent conceptual structure. Theories of the representation of knowledge domains produce models that include definition, representation units, and semantic relationships that are essential for structuring such domain models. A realist viewpoint is proposed to enhance domain ontologies, as definitions provide structure that reveals not only ontological commitment but also relationships between unit representations.

    Abstract
THESYS is based on the natural language processing of free-text databases. It yields statistically evaluated correlations between words of the database. These correlations correspond to traditional thesaurus relations. The person who has to build a thesaurus is thus assisted by the proposals made by THESYS. THESYS is being tested on commercial databases under real world conditions. It is part of a text processing project at Siemens, called TINA (Text-Inhalts-Analyse). Software from TINA is actually being applied and evaluated by the US Department of Commerce for patent search and indexing (REALIST: REtrieval Aids by Linguistics and STatistics)

    Abstract
Describes the hyperterm system REALIST (REtrieval Aids by LInguistic and STatistics) and describes its semantic component. The semantic component of REALIST generates semantic term relations such synonyms. It takes as input a free text data base and generates as output term pairs that are semantically related with respect to their meanings in the data base. In the 1st step an automatic syntactic analysis provides linguistical knowledge about the terms of the data base. In the 2nd step this knowledge is compared by statistical similarity computation. Various experiments with different similarity measures are described

    Abstract
Philosophy grapples with the deepest and most difficult questions in human life. In a 2012 article, Jonathan Furner raises questions about the "Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data" (FRSAD) model. Can the FRSAD framers really avoid tackling philosophical questions as they attempt to do-the long-running dispute between nominalists and realists, in particular? This article attempts to flesh out a realist position while showing some implications for the new Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records-Library Reference Model. It is not clear that FRSAD really takes a realist view, as Furner claims, and a position on the nominalist-realist debate is not necessary for information professionals.

    Abstract
Purpose - The philosophical position known as critical realism is briefly introduced, and some of its central features are used to connect the philosophy and the realist social theory to some current library and information science (LIS) models of information behaviour. Design/methodology/approach - The paper uses a literature-based analysis of the critical realism concepts of a stratified social reality, the importance of contextualisation, and the relation between structure and agency. These features are discussed in relation to various models of information-seeking behaviour, but also to the "interpretative" approach to information as meaning which can only be achieved through discourses in a human community. Findings - The critical realism perspective could lay a fruitful foundation for an interdisciplinary research field like LIS, and its user studies in particular, concerned with many levels of information creation, seeking, use and processing. It is the task of the LIS researcher to explain the mechanisms that influence the information seeking, not only on an empirical level, by observing the user and his/her discourse community, but also by revealing possible underlying causes and relations. Originality/value - An awareness of the fact that social and cultural structures exist independent of one's knowledge of them has implications on how many central problems in the LIS field are regarded and studied.

    Abstract
REALIST (Retrieval Aids by Linguistics and Statistics) is a tool which supplies the user of free text information retrieval systems with information about the terms in the databases. The resulting tables of terms show term relations according to their meaning in the database and form a kind of 'road map' of the database to give the user orientation help

    Abstract
The basic realist claim is that a mind-independent reality exists. It should be common sense knowledge to accept this claim, just as any theories that try to deny it soon become inconsistent because reality strikes back. In spite of this, antirealist philosophies flourish, not only in philosophy but also in the behavioral and cognitive sciences and in information science. This is highly problematic because it removes the attention from reality to subjective phenomena with no real explanatory power. Realism should not be confused with the view that all scientific claims are true or with any other kind of naiveté concerning knowledge claims. The opposite of realism may be termed antirealism, idealism, or nominalism. Although many people confuse empiricism and positivism with realism, these traditions are by nature strongly antirealist, which is why a sharp distinction should be made between empiricism and realism. Empirical research should not be founded on assumptions about "the given" of observations, but should recognize the theory-laden nature of observations. Domain analysis represents an attempt to reintroduce a realist perspective in library and information science. A realist conception of relevance, information seeking, information retrieval, and knowledge organization is outlined. Information systems of all kinds, including research libraries and public libraries, should be informed by a realist philosophy and a realist information science.
