    Abstract
    Die Hirnforschung, an der Naturwissenschaftler ebenso beteiligt sind wie Psychologen und Philosophen, ist eines der faszinierendsten und meistdiskutierten Untersuchungsgebiete. Eine wichtige Frage, auf die sich das Augenmerk der Wissenschaftler richtet, ist: Wie werden kognitive Leistungen durch neuronale Prozesse realisiert? Obwohl die Kognitionswissenschaftler immer mehr über Leistungen wie Wahrnehmung, Denken und Lernen erfahren, und die Neurobiologen immer besser die Vorgänge im Gehirn verstehen, ist der Zusammenhang von Kognition und Gehirn noch weitgehend unverstanden. Fortschritte lassen sich erzielen, indem experimentalpsychologische und neurobiologische Untersuchungen zusammengeführt und integriert werden.     Wie ordnen sich in unserem Gehirn Begriffe, Vorstellungen und Erinnerungen zu zusammenhängenden Gedanken? William Calvin erklärt, wie diese Elementarsprache unseres Denkens funktioniert. Ihre Bausteine lassen sich nicht beliebig sortieren. Sie werden so lange arrangiert und sortiert, bis ein brauchbarer Gedanke oder Satz zustande kommt. Calvin zeigt, wie dieser Prozeß der Selektion und Kombination aus dem Hintergrund von einer »Darwinmaschine« gesteuert wird.

    Mit allerneuesten Meßmethoden kann man heute sozusagen einen Blick in das lebende, denkende Gehirn werfen.
