    Abstract
Metadata is a term to describe the information required to documents the characteristics of information contained within databases. Describes the elements that make up metadata. A number of software tools exist to help apply document management principles to electronic records but they have, so far, been inadequately applied. Describes 2 initiative currently under way to develop software to automate many records management functions. Understanding document management principles as applied to electronic records are vital to records managers

    Abstract
IBM's Ultimedia Manager is a software product for the management and retrieval of image data. It includes both traditional database search and content based search. The 2 main components of Ultimedia Manager are a database population tool to prepare images for query by identifying areas of interest and computing their features, and the query tool for doing retrievals. Application areas include stock photography, electronic libraries, retail, cataloguing, and business graphics

    Abstract
Examines the practicalities of introducing document management and workflow technology, based on commercially available software products, in a small-to-medium sized business. Produces a workflow model for a hypothetical organization to purchase goods or services associated with its business and examines the enabling technology, and set up costs. There are no generic solutions. Each process needs to be evaluated to determine the automation needs

    Abstract
Considers practical methods that could be used to convert a vertical file to a computerized file. In a computerized vertical file system, documents such as pages of books, booklets, newspaper clippings and photographs are stored in files that can be accessed by computer. A scanner is used to convert paper documents and enter them into the system. The documents are indexed by manual indexing, automatic full text indexing or both, and they are stored on disk. Document management software is used for indexing and document retrieval. Vertical file users can view stored documents on a computer screen, copy page images to a floppy disk, or print the images
