    Abstract
    Betrachtet wird der europäische Entwurf der Informationsgesellschaft in der Folge des EG-Weißbuches von 1993 und der Tagung in Korfu (1994). Es zeigt sich die zentrale Rolle des Informationsengineering. Hier geht es um die Produktion, Speicherung, Verteilung und Abfrage von Informationen. Wirtschaftliche Kennziffern beleuchten den deutschen Informationsmarkt (Online-Datenbanken, CD-ROM, Videotex, professionelle Informationsvermittlung). Die Relevanz elektronischer Informationsdienste für die betriebswirtschaftliche Praxis (Branchen- und Konkurrenzanalysen, Benchmarking) wird anhand von konkreten Beispielrecherchen demonstriert. Elektronische Datenbanken gestatten, die wissenschaftliche Forschung im Rahmen der Wissenschaftsevaluation mittels Publikations- Zitations- oder Themenanalysen zu beschreiben und zu bewerten. Ein Kapitel beschreibt detailliert diejenigen Tätigkeiten, die beim Auf- und Ausbau elektronischer Informationsdienste routinemäßig durchgeführt werden, mit dem Ziel, Qualitätsmerkmale für die Informationstätigkeit abzuleiten. Die Komplexität der Informationstätigkeiten führt u.a. in Bereiche der fuzzy logic und der Informationshermeneutik. Abgeschlossen wird das Buch mit einer 'Anatomie' einer konkreten Datenbank. Beispiel ist die ifo Literaturdatenbank, die erfolgreich bei mehreren Hosts als Online-Datenbank sowie zusätzlich als CD-ROM Datenbank vermarktet wird

    Abstract
    Wenn ein Unternehmen oder eine Forschungseinrichtung externe Informationen benötigt, so gibt es eine interne Lösung, die Einrichtung entsprechender informationswirtschaftlicher Infrastruktur, sowie das Outsourcing, derzeit meist das Ansprechen eines professionellen Information Broker. Gibt es bei der externen Lösung Alternativen, insbesondere der kostengünstigen Art? Wenn eine Privatperson ein Informationsproblem hat, wer fungiert als professioneller Ansprechpartner? Zur Zeit gibt es nur wenige für jedermann bezahlbare Möglichkeiten, sich Informationen aus kommerzeillen Online-Archiven beschaffen zu lassen oder selbst zu recherchieren. Aber gibt es denn dan nicht eine Institution, die eigentlich seit ihren Anfängen für Informationsvermittlung zuständig ist?     Abstract
    Seit 1983 gibt es die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Informationsvermittlung (AGI). Die AGI-Information Management Consultants, vorneweg Manfred Hauer, sind inzwischen ausgewiesene Spezialisten bei der Anwendung von Information Retrieval-Systemen. Seit 1994 bietet M. Hauer ein umfassendes Produkt an, das INFORMATION CENTER, das u.a. Elemente der Bibliotheksverwaltung, der Pressedokumentation, der Recherche, der Adreßverwaltung und des Publizierens miteinander verbindet. Durch den aktuellen Umstieg der Basis-Software, Lotus, auf die neue IBM-Suchmaschine GTR hat eine Betrachtung von INFORMATION CENTER besondere Relevanz, erreichen wir doch nunmehr einen Bereich, der von Informatikern und Beratern mit 'Knowledge Management' umschrieben wird. Damit wäre INFORMATION CENTER das erste deutsche Knowledge Management-Produkt auf einer umfassenden informationswissenschaftlichen Basis. Wird es einem solchen Anspruch gerecht?
