    Abstract
Proposes a conceptual model to examine hypertext information presentation effects on decision making performance when compared with traditional sequentional information presentation and access. Considers which combination of task knowledge type (superficial, and causal) and information presentation styles (sequential, hypertext) yield the best decision making performance. This is achieved by comparing performance effect of hypertext and sequential information presentation when applied to superficial and causal type of knowledge required for the task. The 2 surrogates used for measuring the outcome of the performance effects are decision time and secision accuracy

    Abstract
Experiential learning theory, introduced by Kolb, suggests that people develop different learning styles. A study was conducted to determine whether or not individuals who exhibit certain learning styles are more successful in using a hypermedia problem solving system. The Learning Style Inventory was used to classifiy subjects into 4 groups based on their learning styles: converger, diverger, assimilator, and accomodator. The study found that learning style had an impact on problem solving quality when using the hypermedia system. The preferred learning style in a hypermedia based problem solving environment is the converger. In terms of learning orientation, abstract conceptualizers performed a higher quality of hypertext based problem solving than those who prefer concrete experience

    Abstract
The rapid evolution of hypermedia technology makes it possible to access an immense volume of information in an educational setting. This research examines the relationship between individual differences (in particular, cognitive styles) and navigation strategies using a WWW-based hyper-media learning system. The hypermedia learning system was used at Sheffield University's Department of Information Studies. 20 Master students were pre-tested for their cognitive styles. Dependent variables included navigation patterns, selection of navigation tools, and reactions to the hypermedia system. the results indicated that students with differing cognitive styles and individual characteristics selected different access facilities and applied different navigation patterns. The implication of these findings and the role of individual differences in designing hypermedia-based learning systems are discussed

    Abstract
There has been an increased growth in the use of hypermedia to deliver learning and teaching material. However, much remains to be learned about how different learners perceive such systems. Therefore, it is essential to build robust learning models to illustrate how hypermedia features are experienced by different learners. Research into individual differences suggests cognitive styles have a significant effect on student learning in hypermedia systems. In particular, Witkin's Field Dependence has been extensively examined in previous studies. This article reviews the published findings from empirical studies of hypermedia learning. Specifically, the review classifies the research into five themes: nonlinear learning, learner control, navigation in hyperspace, matching and mismatching, and learning effectiveness. A learning model, developed from an analysis of findings of the previous studies, is presented. Finally, implications for the design of hypermedia learning systems are discussed

    Abstract
Presents a study on hypertext examining the cognitive styles and spatial ability of users; the complexity of tasks; and the strucutre of information organization and the visualization of the structure. Future work on hypertext usability should emphasize task taxonomies along with longitudinal and ethnographic studies for a deep understanding of the interactions between users and hypertext

    Abstract
Presents a 3 dimensional model of information exploration. An attempt is made to clarify the respective roles of the human and the system in browsing and information retrieval, and to characterise alternative interaction styles to maximise retrieval effectiveness. Illustrates the applicability of the model of exploration by describing 8 paradigmatic cases of information exploration that represent different vertices of the model. Describes initial experiment that attempted to assess the pragmatic impact of various combinations of exploration features. Discusses methods for integrating hypermedia and information retrieval into general information exploration systems and discusses some of the processes that people use in information exploration. Argues for the development of hybrid information systems combining exploration features in the most appropriate way according to the task needs of users

    Abstract
Describes a hypermedia application that provides students reading German texts with advance organizers in the form of a movie clip designed to facilitate global comprehension and glosses for words in the form of text, graphics, video, and sound. Results of testing indicate that studuents not only reported the photograph and movie links as most helpful for learning vocabulary, but in fact chose them more than text. Performance on vocabulary tests showed that when links were accessed, words were recalled correctly approximately 75% of the time. Learner behaviour data showed that so called visualizers and verbalizers performed equally well on the vocabulary tests but accessed different modes of information (links) corresponding to their respective cognitive styles

    Abstract
Concept mapping has a history of use in many disciplines as a formal or semi formal diagramming technique. Concept maps have an abstract structure as type hypergraphs, and computer support for concept mapping can associate visual attributes with node types to provide an attractive and consistent appearance. Computer support can also provide interactive interfaces allowing arbitrary actions to be associated with nodes such as hypermedia links to other maps and documents. Describes a general concept mapping system that is open architecture for integration with other systems, scriptable to support arbitrary interactions and computations, and customizable to emulate many styles of map. The system supports collaborative development of concept maps across local area and wide area networks, and integrates with WWW in both client helper and server gateway roles. A number of applications are illustrated ranging through education, artificial intelligence, active documents, hypermedia indexing and concurrent engeneering. Concept maps should be regarded as basic components of any hypermedia system, complementing text and images with formal and semi-formal active diagrams

    Abstract
Introduces a generic approach to the development of hypermedia information systems. Emphasises the role of intrinsic inter-document relationships in structuring and visualising a large hypermedia information space. Illustrates the use of this approach based on 3 types of similarity measurements: hypertext linkage, content similarity and usage patterns. Salient patterns in these relationships are extracted and visualised in a simle and intuitive associated network. The spatial layout of a visualisation is optimised such that closely related documents are placed near to each other and only those intrinsic connections among them are shown to users as automatically generated virtual links. Supports self-organized information space transformation based on usage patterns and othe feedback such that the visual strucutre of the information space is incrementally tailored to users' search and browsing styles
