    Abstract
    In der Studie werden drei pragmatisch orientierte Bedeutungstheorien untersucht. Dem von Grice ausgehenden Ansatz nach lässt sich Bedeutung aus Sprecherabsichten ableiten. Die Sprechakttheorie in der von Searle und Habermas vorgetragenen Form geht davon aus, Bedeutung und Handlung seien über konstitutive Regeln verbunden. Davidson entwickelt die Bedeutungstheorie als eine Wahrheitstheorie, welche den Erfordernissen an eine Bedeutungstheorie angepasst wird. Da diese für Davidson die Gestalt einer Interpretationstheorie annimmt, müssen in einer Theorie der Bedeutung die Überzeugungen und Absichten der Sprechenden berücksichtigt werden. Gleichwohl ist es ihm zufolge nicht möglich, die Bedeutungen aus den Sprecherabsichten abzuleiten, wie im Grice-Programm behauptet, oder im Sinne der Sprechakttheorie auf konstitutive Regeln zurückzuführen. Vielmehr sind für Davidson Bedeutungen und Handlungen partiell voneinander unabhängig (Prinzip der Autonomie der Bedeutung) und beide können daher nicht über ein Set von Regeln miteinander verbunden werden. Kommunikation und Bedeutung plädiert für die Davidsonianische Perspektive, auch wenn man gezwungen ist, Davidsons Argumente zu ergänzen und zum Teil zu revidieren. Insbesondere sein Argument gegen den Konventionalismus in der Bedeutungstheorie muss schwächer gefasst werden, da Regelmäßigkeiten in der Sprachverwendung durchaus als notwendige Bedingungen der Interpretation verstanden werden können.

    Abstract
    Searles Essay über Sprechakte steht in der Tradition der angelsächsischen ordinary language philosophy, die sich - nach dem Scheitern der Versuche, eine >ideale< empiristische Wissenschaftssprache zu konstruieren - darauf konzentriert, das faktische Funktionieren der natürlichen Sprache zu beschreiben. Austin hatte bemerkt, daß wir mit bestimmten Äußerungen (wie Grüßen, Danken oder Versprechen) zugleich eine Handlung vollziehen, und hatte diesen >performativen< Charakter später auf alle sprachlichen Äußerungen ausgedehnt. Searle knüpft an diese Entdeckung an und liefert mit dem vorliegenden Werk einen Entwurf jener von Austin geforderten »neuen Theorie, die vollständig und allgemein darlegt, was man tut, wenn man etwas sagt«.

    Abstract
    Menschen verfügen über ein breites Handlungsrepertoire und umfangreiches Wissen. Wir können laufen und sprechen, viele von uns sogar in verschiedenen Sprachen. Wir wissen, wie man ein Auto fährt, dass Mozart ein Komponist war, und fürchten uns, wenn uns ein aggressiver Hund begegnet. Ohne dieses vielfältige Wissen wären wir nicht in der Lage, uns in der Welt zurechtzufinden und zu behaupten. Einen großen Teil dieses Wissens haben wir durch Beobachten unserer Artgenossen gelernt (Beobachtungslernen). Anderes haben wir gelernt, weil die Umwelt auf unsere Handlungen reagiert. Reagiert die Umwelt positiv auf eine unserer Handlungen, dann zeigen wir diese Handlung in Zukunft häufiger, reagiert sie negativ, lassen wir es eher bleiben (operantes Konditionieren). Viele Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten erwerben wir aber dadurch, dass wir extern vorliegende Informationen aufnehmen und so verarbeiten, dass dabei neues Wissen entsteht. Psychologen sprechen hier von menschlicher Informationsverarbeitung oder kognitivem Lernen, um zum Ausdruck zu bringen, dass die Informationen durch ein verstehendes, kognitives System verarbeitet werden. Das kognitive Lernen steht im Fokus dieses Beitrages. Die hohe Bedeutung des kognitiven Lernens gerade im Zeitalter der Informationsgesellschaft liegt auf der Hand: Mächtige und effiziente Formen der externen Speicherung von Wissen stellen nur dann einen Vorteil dar, wenn die Mechanismen, mit denen wir aus Information Wissen schaffen, vergleichbar mächtig und effizient sind.

    Abstract
    Schlagworte wie "Wissens-" oder "Informationsgesellschaft' sind in aller Munde, aber die Bedeutung der Begriffe ist vielfach so unklar wie die Vorstellungen unpräzise sind, welche gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungsperspektiven und künftige Probleme damit verbunden sein können. Der VDI hat deswegen im Rahmen seiner "Zukunftsdialoge" vier Tagungen mit dem Ziel veranstaltet, entlang wichtiger Achsen Schneisen in das unübersichtliche Dickicht zu schlagen.     "Das Langzeitgedächtnis, entwickelt sich erst im Verlauf des zweiten Lebensjahrs: Vorher können sich Kleinkinder nur sehr schlecht an länger zurückliegende Ereignisse erinnern, berichten amerikanische Wissenschaftler im britischen Fachblatt "Nature" (Bd. 419, S: 896). Demnach be.halten sechs Monate alte Babys Erlebnisse lediglich 24 Stunden im Gedächtnis, mit neun Monaten steigt das Erinnerungsvermögen schon auf einen Monat. Um die Entwicklung des Gedächtnisses zu untersuchen, wurde Kleinkindern im Alter von 9,17 und 24 Monaten zunächst eine kleine Geschichte vorgespielt. Begleitet von dem Ausruf "Zeit zum Saubermachen" wischte ein Wissenschaftler zum Beispiel vor ihren Augen einen Tisch ab und warf das Papiertuch anschließend in den Mülleimer. Direkt im Anschluss und noch einmal vier Monate später wurden die Kinder aufgefordert, die Handlungen nachzumachen. Die Forscher fanden heraus, dass sich diejenigen Kinder, die sich zum Zeitpunkt des ersten Tests schon im zweiten Lebensjahr befanden, lebhaft an die Geschichte erinnern und die Handlung nachahmen. Die jüngeren, beim ersten Test neun Monate alten Kinder, hatten hingegen keine Erinnerung an das zuvor Erlebte. Nach Ansicht der Wissenschaftler ist die Ausbildung des Langzeitgedächtnisses eng an die Entwicklung des Gehirns gekoppelt."

    Weiterführende Untersuchungen mit bildgebenden Verfahren verdanken wir dem britischen Hirnforscher Hawkan Lau und seinen Kollegen vom University College in London. Wenn die Versuchsteilnehmer im Kernspintomographen - introspektiv - ihre ganze Aufmerksamkeit konzentriert auf den Moment der Intention richteten, in dem sie den Impuls, den inneren Drang (englisch "urge") verspürten, einen Finger zu krümmen, dann veränderte sich in diesem Augenblick die Hirnaktivität in einer charakteristischen Weise. Sie verstärkte sich ausgerechnet in einem Rindenfeld, von dem man annimmt, es sei an der aktuellen Planung eines Bewegungsablaufs beteiligt. Besagter Hirnbezirk liegt an der (medialen) Innenseite einer Hirnhemisphäre in direkter Nachbarschaft zum motorischen Kortex und heißt in der Fachsprache "präsupplementärmotorischer Kortex" (englisch abgekürzt "Pre-SMA").Die im Wissenschaftsmagazin "Science" publizierten Forschungsergebnisse erregten großes Aufsehen, zumal sich eine Aktivierung des Pre-SMA nicht feststellen ließ, wenn die Probanden kaum auf die Intention einer Fingerbewegung achteten, sondern - statt dessen - auf die Auslösung der Bewegung. Die englischen Neurobiologen hätten durch ihre Forschungsarbeit herausgefunden, dass die neuronale Aktivität im Pre-SMA der cerebralen Repräsentation einer Intention entspräche, hieß es in der Laudatio anlässlich der Verleihung des renommierten William James-Preises an Lau und seine Kollegen. Und: Die preisgekrönte Forschung lege nahe, dass die Fokussierung der Aufmerksamkeit auf die Intention einer Handlung auch deren bewusste (willentliche) Kontrolle ermöglichen könnte. Diese Schlussfolgerungen könnten möglicherweise auch von Bedeutung für die Psychotherapie einer Angststörung, der Zwangsneurose, sein. Es stellt sich nämlich die Frage, ob Achtsamkeit und Aufmerksamkeit auf die Intention, bzw. den inneren Drang zu handeln, nicht manchen Menschen mit Zwangsstörungen helfen könnten, ihre Zwänge - einen Waschzwang beispielsweise - etwas besser unter Kontrolle zu bringen.
