- Abstract
- Die Geschichte informeller, gemeinschaftlich gepflegter Online-Bibliographien sowie die zentralen Konzepte von Social-Bookmarking-Diensten (Bibliographie sozialer Netzwerke, Sacherschließung durch Social Tagging, Folksonomies als persönliche und Collabularies als gemeinschaftliche Vokabulare) werden dargestellt und diskutiert. Zur Charakterisierung der geschilderten Gesamtentwicklung wird der Begriff Metadatenrevolution eingeführt. Es werden Strategien vorgeschlagen, mit denen Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen auf diese Entwicklung eingehen können.

- Abstract
- 1998 wurde die Digitalisierung der Zettelkataloge der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek in Wien abgeschlossen. Diese technologische Veränderung, welche die Mehrzahl der kulturellen Archive der Gegenwart vollziehen, ist ein Einschnitt in der Geschichte der Bibliothek und ihrer Benützer, eine Bruchstelle, die zugleich eine Fundstelle ist: Ab diesem Zeitpunkt kann der Buchbestand nur noch per Computer abgerufen werden; die fast gewichtslose Karteikarte, deren Lesen und Finden im Katalog noch an eine gewisse räumliche und taktile Erfahrung gebunden war, wird zur gewichtslosen, allseits abrufbaren Information. Der Nominalkatalog, also das alphabetische, nach Autor und Titel geordnete Verzeichnis der Bibliothek, umfaßt 84 Katalogkästen aus Holz, Stahl und Kunststoff, 3024 Laden und rund 2,6 Millionen Zettel, an denen Bibliothekare mehrerer Generationen gearbeitet haben. Der Zettelkatalog ist ein unscheinbares Möbel. Erst sein Fehlen oder seine Unvollständigkeit wird bemerkt. Als ein System geistiger Ordnung, wie Robert Musil den Katalog beschrieben hat, ist er historisch geworden. Damit aber wird der Katalog - durch die Digitalisierung von seinem Zweck befreit - erstmals als Skulptur im Raum sichtbar.
Dieser Raum kann vom Betrachter ästhetisch und historisch "durchmessen" werden. Er ist im ästhetischen Sinn erfahrbar als eine sterile und neutrale Topographie von Kästen, Laden und Zettel. Zugleich ist er historisch lesbar als eine durch Volumen, Anspruch und Komplexität gleichermaßen erhabene wie groteske Kulisse der Moderne. Sie umgrenzt einen historischen Raum von der Französischen Revolution bis zur Gegenwart: Die Zettel und Kästen erzählen von einer über Jahrhunderte hindurch entwickelten methodischen Anstrengung der Ordnung und der Disziplinierung der Erinnerung. Sie bilden ein semiotisches System, das auf die Vergangenheit eines papierenen Ordnungs- und Aufschreibsystems verweist. Zur Gegenwart und Geschichte des Kataloges haben wir in diesem Band Texte, Materialien und Fotografien aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln versammelt. Auf die drei Originalbeiträge und Bilder vom Katalog folgt eine ausführliche Dokumentation seiner Entstehung und Vorstufen. Bevor er in der Geschichte verschwindet, wird der Katalog 1999 an mehreren Stationen in Europa ein letztes Mal gezeigt. Welche Funktion haben dabei die Organisatoren, die den Katalog auf seiner Reise begleiten? Im Bernerdeutsch des Schweizer Schriftstellers Friedrich Glauser findet sich dafür vielleicht der passende Ausdruck. Wenn man eingeladen wird, an einem Ereignis teilzunehmen, an einer Partie Jass etwa oder an einem Essen, wird man gefragt, ob man dabei "mithelfen" will. So als ob das Spiel sich selber spiele, als ob die Mechanik des Ereignisses von selbst ablaufe und es nur einer kleinen Mit- oder Nachhilfe bedürfe, damit es wie von selbst vonstatten geht.

- Abstract
- An Internet survey of 38 different OPAC systems, at eighty different libraries, was undertaken to investigate the effect on retrieval of the presence of the hyphen or the ampersand in titles. Title and Keyword searches were performed. In Title search, 22 of the systems treat the hyphen as equivalent to a space, while in Keyword the number is 16. The other systems treat it in various different ways (even including the equivalent of NOT), which means that results of searching multiple catalogs are very inconsistent. The ampersand may be ignored, treated as a special character, or treated as "and," again with very inconsistent results. Various recommendations are made with a view to improving consistency of performance.

- Abstract
- Die Geschichte der Bibliothek der Philosophisch-Theologischen Hochschule in Benediktbeuern geht wie die Hochschule selbst auf das Jahr 1931 zurück, als die Salesianer Don Boscos, eine Ordensgemeinschaft der katholischen Kirche, das ehemalige Kloster Benediktbeuern, welches zum Säkularisationsgut geworden war, vom Staat erwarben, um dort eine theologische Studienanstalt für den eigenen Nachwuchs einzurichten. Daraus ist mittlerweile eine staatlich anerkannte Hochschule mit Promotions- und Habilitationsrecht geworden. Und ebenso hat sich auch die Hochschulbibliothek über die nun mehr als siebzig Jahre ihres Bestehens aus den bescheidenen Anfängen heraus zu einem der zahlreichen modernen, wenn auch kleinen Dienstleistungsbetrieben, die die kirchlichen Bibliotheken in der Bibliothekslandschaft des deutschsprachigen Raums darstellen, entwickelt. Keinem der großen Bibliotheksverbünde aktiv angeschlossen umfasst sie derzeit über 330.000 Bände, hält ca. 650 laufende Zeitschriften und verfügt über einen Vermehrungsetat für Bücher und Zeitschriften von rund 77.000 ?. 3,3 Personalstellen sind für die Neueinstellung von ca. 6.000 Einheiten, die Bearbeitung von ca. 1.000 passiven Fernleihen, etwa 13.000 Ortsausleihen und für die Versorgung von ca. 650 Benutzern zweier Hochschulen mit weiteren Informationen zuständig; denn neben der PTH hat sich seit 1970 in Benediktbeuern auch eine Abteilung der Katholischen Stiftungsfachhochschule München in den Räumen des Klosters eingemietet, um ein gemeinsames und bundesweit einmaliges Doppelstudium von Diplom-Theologie und Sozialer Arbeit anzubieten.
