    Abstract
Describes the availability, use and value of Z39.50, an international standard which allows a librarian accessing a database on one computer platform to search an OPAC hosted on another computer with a totally different database structure. Experiences of those working with the standard are given, and its use by the European Union IRIS project to link 6 major Irish research libraries is examined. Despite some problems encountered with different forms of author cataloguing and possible competition from the WWW, the standard is seen as possessing considerable strengths, for example in searching different catalogues and presenting the results in a standard format on screen, which justify the continuing interest of librarians

    Abstract
Reports briefly on the development, by the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) of the CURL OPAC, or COPAC. COPAC is seen as the partial realization of the aims of earlier projects, such as the UK Libraries Database System (UKLDS). Although COPAC was not designed as a union catalogue, it was a natural next step for CURL to obtain funding from the Joint Information Services Committee (JISC), following the Follett Report, to use the database to create a union catalogue. The work is being undertaken at Manchester University, which has held the CURL database since its creation, and the version was launched on 30 Apr 96

    Abstract
One finding of the 2006 OCLC study of College Students' Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources was that students expressed equal levels of trust in libraries and search engines when it came to meeting their information needs in a way that they felt was authoritative. Seeking to incorporate this insight into our own instructional methodology, Schaffer Library at Union College has attempted to engineer a shift from Google to Google Scholar among our student users by representing Scholar as a viable adjunct to the catalog and to snore traditional electronic resources. By attempting to engage student researchers on their own terms, we have discovered that most of them react enthusiastically to the revelation that the Google they think they know so well is, it turns out, a multifaceted resource that is capable of delivering the sort of scholarly information that will meet with their professors' approval. Specifically, this article focuses on the fact that many Google Scholar searches link hack to our own Web catalog where they identify useful book titles that direct OPAC keyword searches have missed.

    Abstract
In Northern Germany, the State of Lower Saxony has developed an online library network, the center of which is the Library Computer Center at the State and University Library in Goettingen. This center offers the following data bases online: the union catalogue of serials in Lower Saxony libraries; the union catalogue of books since 1977 in these libraries; the IBZ and IBR; the last two years of the Deutsche Bibliographie, the British National Bibliography and, within the next few months, the titles offered by the Library of Congress (all in full service); then all new titles in this data base will be compatible to MARC II.

    Abstract
There is currently a lively debate about the role of the library catalogue and its relationship to other resource discovery tools. An example of this debate is the recent publication of a report commissioned by the Library of Congress on "the changing nature of the catalogue" As part of this debate, the role of union catalogues is also being re-examined. Some commentators have suggested that union catalogues, by virtue of their size, can aggregate both supply and demand, thus increasing the chance that a relatively little-used resource will be discovered by somebody for whom it is relevant. During the past year, the National Library of Australia (NLA) has been considering the future of its catalogue and its role in the resource discovery and delivery process. The review was prompted, in part, by the redevelopment of the Australian union catalogue and its exposure on the web as a free public service, badged as Libraries Australia. The NLA examined the enablers and inhibitors to proposition "that it replace its catalogue with Libraries Australia, as the primary database to be searched by users". Flowing from this review, the NLA is aiming to undertake a number of tasks to move in the medium to long term towards a scenario in which it could deprecate its local catalogue. Abstract
A study of the online catalogues of major academic libraries and databases in the Netherlands shows considerable variation in the form of name used for the author W.F. Hermans. The problem lies with a lack of authority control in headings used in the Dutch national union Pica catalogue. Reactions from 2 cataloguers point to the difficulties in maintaining catalogues in the face of reduced funding and to the important role played by the Pica project in improving library services and reducing cataloguing backlogs

    Abstract
The paper will discuss the following points: What do we mean by a 'good' catalogue, which requirements to the database design must be satisfied for the system to act as a good catalogue, which types of database management system should we use, can a catalogue be distributed on several computers and how will this influenece the performance, availability, maintenance, etc., how does a 'union' catalogue consusting of several independant catalogues on different computers act as 'a' catalogue?

    Abstract
Reports results of an online survey of in house users acessing California University's computerized union catalogue, the MELVYL library system, from public access terminals in the libraries of the California University at Santa Cruz (UCSC). The study included descriptive statistics on user status, affiliation, anticipated focus of system usage, judgement of ease of system use, and need for assistance. The transaction logs of respondents to the survey were analyzed and cross tabulated with demographic data on the same group of users. Particular attention was given to subject searching and to the dilemmas that confront users of a system in which heuristics are largely absent. Data was compared with similar data collected in a earlier study of user who accessed the MELVYL library system from remote sites

    Abstract
Examines the use of the Z39.50 Information Retrieval protocol for provision of access to its collections. Z39.50 offers a translation of different search engines developed by library systems suppliers and online database hosts. Traces its development and describes its abstraction and metalanguage, and the TCP/IP and OSI layer. It is being further developed in project ONE - OPAC Network in Europe, and European Union Library Plan project which began in Jan 95, of which the British Library is a partner. It aims to link national library catalogues in an open standards and telecommunications network, and to achieve interoperability by use of Z39.50. Describes the project so far, agreements made, and future developments

    Abstract
FirstSearch is an on-line reference product from OCLC, launched in Oct. 91, that offers inexperienced end users searches easy access to on-line data bases through a simple menu interface. The flagship data base on the OCLC FirstSearch system is the Online Union Catalogue (Called WorldCat on FirstSearch). 14 data bases are available at time of press with a further 18 planned by the end of 1992. Although pricing of OCLC'a EPIC service is based on the standard connect time and display charges, the need for more predictable methods of charging led to FirstSearch use being sold in blocks of 500 searches. Bulk buying of blocks reduces the price per search from 90 cents (for 1 block) to 45 cents (from 160 blocks and above). Describes the experiences of Allen County Public Library, Indiana, one of the only 2 public libraries among the 16 initial test sites for FirstSearch

    Abstract
Presents a pilot study for an Internordic project to monitor the use of online catalogues in the Nordic technological university libraries. Focuses on the use of classification in subject searching, how the UDC is used and the extent of its use. Studies user interaction with the OPACs and improvements to information retrieval in the catalogues using the transaction log method to gather data. The pilot study examnines the TENTTU Books database which is the online union catalogue of the Helsinki Univ. of Technology Library, a multilingual database with true information retrieval. The Internordic study itself will make comparisons between the TENTTU system and the new Virginia Tech Library System. Discusses the users monitored, method of analysis, subject searching in the database, results and how the UDC codes were used. Compares this to other studies conducted in Finland and evaluates the project

    Abstract
COPAC (CURL Online Public Access Catalogue) grew out of the union catalogue database of the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL). COPAC provides free access to the information contained in the main online catalogues of a number of important UK academic research libraries. Records are currently contributed by the university libraries of Cambridge, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Oxford and Trinity College, Dublin (all members of CURL). COPAC evolved from the recommendations of the Follett Reports and is seen as the partial realization of the aims of earlier projects, such as the UK Libraries Database System (UKLDS). Records from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, and London University (Senate House) are being loaded and the online catalogues of the remaining 12 CURL member libraries will be added in due course. COPAC may be accessed, free of charge and 24 hours a day as a WWW interface or as a text interface

    Abstract
Dewey Decimal Classification has been used to organize materials owned by the three scientific libraries at the University of Pavia, and to allow integrated browsing in their union catalogue through SciGator, a home built web-based user interface. Classification acts as a bridge between collections located in different places and shelved according to different local schemes. Furthermore, cross-discipline relationships recorded in the system allow for expanded queries that increase recall. Advantages and possible improvements of such a system are discussed.
