- Abstract
- In der Informationsgesellschaft kommen auf Bibliotheken und Spezialbibliotheken insbesondere neue Aufgaben zu. Automatisierung, Digitalisierung und Virtualisierung sind die Entwicklungsstadien, in denen die Bibliotheken die infrastrukturellen Grundlagen zur Übernahme neuer Funktionalitäten legen. Die Bibliothek wird neben den gewohnten Tätigkeiten dann auch Funktionen eines Dokumentationszentrums, eines Multimediazentrums und eines Verlages übernehmen können. Am Beispiel der Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung wird die funktionale Erweiterung und Anpassung an die durch die digitale Revolution und neue Telekommunikationstechnologien geschaffenen Bedingungen geschildert.

- Abstract
- Das digitale, vom Internet dominierte Zeitalter bedingt nicht nur einen neuen, dynamischen Informations- und Wissensbegriff, sondern verändert tiefgreifend auch das Informationsverhalten und den Informationsbedarf von Studierenden wie Wissenschaftlern. Wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken sind dementsprechend gefordert, die für das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten und Forschen unter den Bedingungen des Internet notwendigen Ressourcen und Services nutzerorientiert zur Verfügung zu stellen und zudem die für eine effiziente Literatur- und Informationssuche unabdingbaren Kompetenzen zu fördern oder zu vermitteln. Das Buch beschreibt wesentliche Determinanten des sich wandelnden Informationsverhaltens in der digitalen Welt - u.a. die Informationsexplosion, das elektronische Publizieren, auch im Rahmen von Open Access, und das Informationsmanagement -, behandelt relevante Informationsträger bzw. -ressourcen und Informationsservices der Wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken. Außerdem werden die für Informationsrecherchen und für die Informationsverarbeitung wesentlichen Kompetenzen dargestellt. Zentrale rechtlich-ethische Implikationen bilden den Abschluss dieser Einführung.

Noch einer Übersicht über die Begriffsbestimmung "Digitale Bibliothek" werden die Forschungsprogramme und Förderansätze hinsichtlich digitaler Bibliotheksprojekte in den USA, Europa, Asien und Ozeanien dargestellt. Einzelne Aspekte der digitalen Bibliothek werden dann näher erläutert wie die Architektur der digitalen Bibliothek, Metadaten, Dokumentenerstellung, Interoperability, Gateways - Clearinghouses etc., Paradigmenverschiebung, elektronische Zeitschriften, Informationsvermittlung, Abrechungsmodalitäten, Archivierung etc. Weiterhin wird überlegt, was die künftigen Implikationen der Informationseuphorie bzw des "dato smog" sind, wie der Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz aussieht und weiche Rolle Bibliothek und Bibliothekare in der Informationsversorgung künftig haben

- Abstract
- Im Vergleich mit der konventionellen Bibliothek stellt der Autor schrittweise die Recherchemöglichkeiten in der virtuellen Bibliothek Internet vor. Dabei werden detailliert Methoden und Strategien zur Informationsgewinnung zunächst beschrieben und anschließend mit Anwendungsaufgaben eingeübt. Die wichtigsten so vorgestellten Bereiche: Kataloge und Suchmaschinen, Diskussionforen, elektronische Nachschlagewerke. Auf die PC-gerechte Weiterverarbeitung der aus dem Internet gewonnenen Daten ('gepackte' Dateien, Texte, Filme, Bilder, Tondokumente) wird ebenfalls eingegangen. - Abstract
- Die für das Hochschulwesen der Schweiz zuständigen Ämter und Gremien befassen sich hauptsächlich mit den technologischen Studierende in diesem Bereich Defizite aufweisen. Ein Vorstoss der ETH-Bibliothek, die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz ins Curriculum aufzunehmen, blieb bei der Schulleitung ohne Erfolg. Die ETH-Bibliothek plant nun den Ausbau ihres aktuellen Schulungsangebots, und sie wird sich weiterhin dafür einsetzen, dass die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz in die Studienpläne Eingang findet.

- Die Forschungsbibliothek ändert ihr Gesicht: Elektronische Datenverarbeitung und Neue Medien erweitern die leistungsfähigkeit und die Aufgaben - vorausgesetzt, Bund und Länder sorgen für die erforderlichen Investititonen. Doch zugleich gerät die traditionelle Aufgabe der wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken in Gefahr. Die Bibliothekare fürchten, daß sie einen Teil der Informationen künftig nur noch inkasso für andere Anbieter vermitteln und die ehrwürdigen Einrichtungen zu Durchlauferhitzern verkommen

- AI@din, das Informationssystem der niederländischen Bibliotheken, sorgt dafür, dass Wissbegierige auf - fast -alle Fragen eine Antwort bekommen. Landesweite Werbekampagnen, auch im Fernsehen, haben das Angebot, rasch bekanntgemacht. AI@din ist ein Erfolg - trotzdem haben die niederländischen Kollegen ein Problem: Der elektronische Informationsservice wird von den allermeisten Benutzern nicht mit der Bibliothek in Verbindung gebracht. Günter Brandorff, der seit langem in den Niederlanden lebt, beschreibt die wichtigsten Aspekte des vorbildlichen Informationssystems im Nachbarland.
