"Jeder Greis, der stirbt, ist eine brennende Bibliothek"-so lautet ein afrikanisches Sprichwort. Jede E-Mail, die gelöscht wird, ist verlorenes Kulturgut - das dachte man sich bei der British Library und forderte jüngst die Landsleute auf, Kopien der täglichen elektronischen Post möglichst massenhaft an die Bibliothek zu senden. Mit der "Email Britain"-Kampagne wolle man für kommende Generationen ein riesiges Archiv anlegen, einen virtuellen Container des "real life" in UK: alles Liebensund Hassenswerte, alles Lächerliche und alles Erhabene, alle Flüchtig- und Nichtigkeiten des Kommunikationsalltags seien würdig, aufbewahrt, katalogisiert, etikettiert und für eine wissensdurstige Nachwelt erhalten zu werden. Um übler Nachrede die Spitze abzubrechen, gab man von vornherein kund, dass Microsoft Sponsor der Aktion sei - zwecks Werbung für das neue Windows Live Hotmail-Programm. Der einmonatige Probelauf ist abgeschlossen, und man kann sich vorstellen, wie sich nun die Archivare der British Library durch das elektronische Gebirge wühlen, die Juwelen und den Müll sortieren, das triviale Gequassel semantisch, soziologisch und kulturanthropologisch durchleuchten und in Rubriken ordnen. Wie wird-die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek reagieren? Vermutlich wartet sie, bis Schäubles Begehr nach flächendeckender Online-Kontrolle Gesetzeskraft und Verfassungsrang hat - und fordert dann einfach, wie die Bücher von den Verlagen, die E-Mail-Kopien als Pflichtexemplare von den Servern an. Was einem demokratischen Rechtsstaat recht ist, muss einem Kulturstaat nicht nur billig, sondern heilig sein: die lückenlose Erfassung und Archivierung aller noch so vernuschelten Äußerungen seiner Bürger. Warten nicht auch Millionen und Abermil-lionen SMS-Botschaften täglich auf kulturelle Anerkennung und Aufnahme ins Nationalarchiv? Was da in Aussicht steht, kann man sich auch als einen riesigen Zettelkasten vorstellen, aus dem sich die Dichter und Denker der Zukunft mühelos bedienen können, um ihre Visionen oder Analysen mit authentischem Material zu unterfüttern. Zettelkasten-Poeten wie weiland Jean Paul oder Arno Schmidt wären womöglich vor Glück übergeschnappt, hätten sie schon online surfen und, auf der Jagd nach elektronischen Schnipseln, regelmäßige Nutzer eines E-Mail-Archivs sein können. Bleibt nur die Frage, warum die Archive nie ans Archivieren unserer Briefe, Telegramme und Faxe gedacht haben. Wurde da nicht eine ganze Kulturstufe übersprungen?"

Abstract

Seit Ende Mai 1996 stellt die ETH-Bibliothek Zürich ihren benutzern ein wachsendes Angebot an elektronischen Volltext-Zeitschriften über Internet zur Vefügung. Über die Homepage 'Elektronische Zeitschriften der ETH-Bibliothek' können sich Interessenten über die Zugriffsbedingungen informieren und auf die Volltexte zugreifen. Das Angebot an Online-Versionen von Zeitschriften wächst gegenwärtig exponentiell, so daß Bibliotheken darüber nachdenken müssen, in welcher Weise relevante Zeitschriftentitel sinnvollerweise den Kunden angeboten werden können. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt anhand des Projektes an der ETH-Bibliothek eine Möglichkeit, wie eine Hochschulbibliothek diesen virtuellen Zeitschriftenbestand präsentieren und verwalten kann

Abstract

Die Bibliothek der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) erfüllt eine Doppelfunktion. Zum einen fungiert sie als Hauptbibliothek der ETH Zürich und darüber hinaus übernimmt sie die Funktion eines naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Informationszentrums für die Schweiz. Bei der Einführung neuer Technologien im Schweizer Bibliothekswesen übernimmt die ETH-Bibliothek zudem traditionell eine Führungsrolle. Vor diesem Hintergrund betrachtet, erstaunt es nicht, dass sich die ETH-Bibliothek seit geraumer Zeit damit befasst, wie Dissertationen elektronisch zur Verfügung gestellt werden können. In der Promotionsordnung der ETH Zürich ist die elektronische Abgabe einer Dissertation bisher nicht vorgesehen. Allerdings müssen die Promovierenden lediglich acht Exemplare ihrer Arbeit abgeben

Noch einer Übersicht über die Begriffsbestimmung "Digitale Bibliothek" werden die Forschungsprogramme und Förderansätze hinsichtlich digitaler Bibliotheksprojekte in den USA, Europa, Asien und Ozeanien dargestellt. Einzelne Aspekte der digitalen Bibliothek werden dann näher erläutert wie die Architektur der digitalen Bibliothek, Metadaten, Dokumentenerstellung, Interoperability, Gateways - Clearinghouses etc., Paradigmenverschiebung, elektronische Zeitschriften, Informationsvermittlung, Abrechungsmodalitäten, Archivierung etc. Weiterhin wird überlegt, was die künftigen Implikationen der Informationseuphorie bzw des "dato smog" sind, wie der Wissenschaftlerarbeitsplatz aussieht und weiche Rolle Bibliothek und Bibliothekare in der Informationsversorgung künftig haben

Abstract

Die vorliegenden Ausführungen versuchen Antworten zu geben, auf die zentrale Frage der sich entwickelnden Informationsgesellschaft: Welche Konzepte beschreibt der Begriff 'Elektronische Bibliothek' im Jahr 1996 für Nutzer und Anbieter von Informationsangeboten im Internet? Hierbei ist von Bedeutung, daß die virtuelle Bibliothek Internet bereits heute ein erhebliches Informationspotential besitzt, das jedoch gegenwärtig noch nicht adäquat genutzt werden kann. Um diese Situation zu verbessern und zu optimieren, müssen einheitliche Nutzungskonzepte entwickelt und implementiert werden. Bei der Diskussion dieser Frage dürfen auch und gerade Bibliotheken nicht vergessen werden, da sie neben der virteullen Bibliothek Internet selbst und neben Internet-basierten Informationssystemen eine zentrale Rolle spielen

Abstract

Nach Abschluß des von der DFG geförderten Projektes 'SSG-Fachinformationssysteme im Internet' legt die Projektgruppe der SUB Göttingen eine ausführliche Dokumentation des Projektkonzeptes vor. Ziel des Projektes war es, ein bibliothekarisches Konzept zu entwickeln, wie Internet-Ressourcen - wobei hierunter nicht einzelne elektronische Dokumente verstanden werden, sondern sog. thematische Server - in das Sammel- und Erschließungskonzept einer wissenschaftlichen Biblithek integriert werden können

Abstract

Aufgrund sich verändernder Rahmenbedingungen im Sommer/Herbst 2000, sollte die gesamte Präsentation der »Virtuellen Bibliothek« an der ETH Zürich neu konzipiert worden. Ausschlaggebend war einerseits die Ausweitung des elektronischen Angebotes und die Unmöglichkeit, diese neuen Dienstleistungen im bisherigen Rahmen anzubieten. Andererseits stand mit einem Redesign des WWW-Auftritts die Möglichkeit im Raum, das gesamte Erscheinungsbild zu überdenken und die bisherige Angebotsstruktur auch aus Benutzersicht kritisch zu hinterfragen. Darüber hinaus stellte ein Redesign eine einmalige Möglichkeit dar, in Kooperation mit einem professionellen Partner ein schlüssiges Konzept zu erarbeiten. Insbesondere sollte für die »Virtuelle Bibliothek« eine Lösung gefunden werden, die unterschiedlichen elektronischen Informationsangebote für die Benutzer möglichst verständlich zu präsentieren. Mit Hilfe von Nutzungsstatistiken konnte eindeutig gezeigt werden, welche Seiten der »Virtuellen Bibliothek« wirklich genutzt werden. Zum elektronischen Angebot der ETH-Bibliothek zählen Datenbanken, elektronische Zeitschriften, elektronische Nachschlagewerke aber auch eine Linksammlung und der Zugriff auf die Dissertationen der ETH Zürich im Volltext. Ausserdem sollte sichergestellt werden, dass unter der neuen Plattform ausreichend Möglichkeit für einen Ausbau des Angebots vorhanden ist, da man davon ausgehen muss, das weitere Dienste in elektronischer Form angeboten werden, wie Graue Literatur, Vorlesungsscripte etc. Um die Verständlichkeit zu verbessern wurde der Begriff »Virtuelle Bibliothek« in »Bibliothek Online« umbenannt. Hinter diesem Begriff sollte ein Pull-down Menü erscheinen, um dem Benutzer auf diese Weise sofort eine erste Orientierung zu ermöglichen. Des weiteren wurde auf die Navigation besonderes Augenmerk gelegt. Die Benutzer sollten immer klar vor Augen haben, wo sie sich jeweils befinden und wie sie auf eine hierarchisch höhere Ebene zurückkehren können. Der Frage, ob und wenn ja in welcher Form eine Linksammlung Teil der »Bibliothek Online« sein soll, war Gegenstand intensiver Diskussionen innerhalb der ETH-Bibliothek. Ein wesentliches Ergebnis hierbei war, dass Qualität vor Quantität den Mehrwert für den Benutzer ergeben soll
