Die Datenbank INFODATA verfügt über einen festen Kundenstamm von ca. 6oo verschiedenen Institutionen und Einrichtungen. Zu den Kunden gehören sowohl die informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungseinrichtungen als auch Institutionen aus allen Bereichen der Wirtschaft. Das jährliche Recherchevo lumen in der Datenbank beträgt etwa 20.000 Anfragen.
Somit verfügt das Informationszentrum über umfangreiche Erfahrungen in der klassischen Datenbankproduktion. Auf der anderen Seite bestehen aber auch mehrjährige Erfahrungen bei der Erstellung elektronischer Dienstleistungsangebote: seit 1999 existiert ein eigener Current Contents Service (http://wwwfh-potsdam.de/~BiB/neu/iz/CC/cc.htm), der Inhaltsverzeichnisse von 50 informationswissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften zu den Themen Informationsmanagement, Neue Medien und Künstliche Intelligenz aufbereitet und kostenlos über das Internet vermittelt. Diese Dienstleistung wird inzwischen ca. 14.00o-mal im Jahr nachgefragt. Gemeinsam mit der Bibliothek der Fachhochschule Potsdam betreut das Informationszentrum den DFG-Sammelschwerpunkt 24.11 "Nicht konventionelle Materialien des Informations- und Dokumentationswesens". In diesem Publikationsbereich vollziehen sich gegenwärtig umfassende Änderungen. Der "Graue Buchmarkt" existiert praktisch fast nicht mehr. Materialien, die nicht über den klassischen Vertriebsweg Buchhandel verbreitet werden, werden jetzt kostenlos über das Medium Internet verteilt. Für diese fachlich oft sehr interessanten elektronischen Ouellen müssen neue Modelle der Erfassung und Vermittlung entwickelt werden. Aus diesem Grunde nahm das Informationszentrum Kontakt zur Deutschen Gesellschaft für Informationswissenschaft und Informationspraxis (DGI) und dem Hochschullehrerverband der Informationswissenschaft (HI) auf, um mit beiden Einrichtungen die Entwicklung eines Publikationsservers für den Bereich Information und Dokumentation zu erörtern. Ein besonderes Interesse galt dabei den zahlreichen elektronischen Materialien, die im Rahmen der informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildung entstehen (Vorlesungen, Scripte, Referate usw.) bzw. in diesem Zusammenhang genutzt werden (Veröffentlichungen aller Art). Gemeinsam mit den beiden Verbänden entstand die Idee, einen Ausbildungsserver für die Informationswissenschaft zu aufzubauen, der die zahlreichen und vielfältigen elektronischen Materialien sammelt - den Publikationsserver INFODATAeDepot (http://www.infodata-edepot.de/). Ziele der Datenbank INFODATA-eDepot sind - die Sammlung der verteilt existierenden elektronischen informationswissenschaftlichen Dokumente in einer Datenbank und damit die Gewährleistung eines einheitlichen Zugriffs auf diese Dokumente, - die professionelle fachinformatorische Erschließung der Dokumente mittels der klassischen INFODATA-Erschließungsmittel ergänzt durch Metadaten, - die Organisation professioneller kostenloser Zugriffsmöglichkeiten auf die Daten und Volltexte, - die dauerhafte Archivierung dieser elektronischen Materialien. Weiterhin wird dieses zentrale Dienstleistungsangebot diejenigen Kapazitäten entlasten, die in den einzelnen Ausbildungsstätten für die Vorhaltung elektronischer Angebote notwendig sind. Es soll Synergieeffekte zwischen Ausbildungseinrichtungen schaffen und den Studierenden des Fachs Informationswissenschaft eine umfangreiche Ressource an elektronischen Materialien zur Verfügung stellen.
