Allerdings sind solche Geldsegnungen auch dazu geeignet, "Blütenträume" zu erzeugen, die leicht zu Alpträumen werden und Allmachtsphantasien anderer Art hervorzauberten: Die Schattenseiten der Künstlichen Intelligenz hat Weizenbaum gerade in diesem Arbeitsumfeld kritisiert, wahrscheinlich weil gerade seine Kollegen aus dem MIT, wie Ray Kurzweil oder Marvin Minsky, mit ihren Cyborg-Visionen für Horrorvorstellungen sorgten. Weizenbaum hat besonders dort am MIT - und bis in die Interviews der letzten Zeit - immer wieder an das menschliche Maß erinnert. Immer wieder hatte er in diesen Kampf nicht nur starke Gegner, wie die Erwähnten aus den Nachbarzimmern "seines" MIT, sondern er hatte über alle Kontinente hinweg auch Verbündete, so dass sich das Bild der Inseln der Vernunft anbot. In meinem Grußschreiben zu seinem 85. Geburtstag im Januar 2008 war die Idee vom Insulaner, der eines Tages wieder auf einem Festland leben kann, mein Wunsch für die Zukunft. Diese Hoffnung hat mit den Ereignissen des 20. Jahrhunderts eine historische Perspektive gewonnen. Denn als Weizenbaums Eltern vor genau 72 Jahren Deutschland noch rechtzeitig verließen, war es unvorstellbar, dass Joseph Weizenbaum später Bürger eines neuen Berlins sein würde und er - neben dem Bundesverdienstkreuz - ungezählte Ehrungen und Ehrendoktorwürden sein eigen würde nennen können. Ich bin mir im Klaren, dass so schnell aus Inseln der Vernunft keine Kontinente entstehen werden. Aber die Hoffnung soll bleiben!"
