Wenn Gehirnforscher behaupten, sie könnten durch bildgebende Verfahren dem Gehirn zusehen, wie Gedanken in der Großhirnrinde aufblitzen, wie Emotionen wach werden; wird such Gerhard Roth skep-tisch: "Man kann Geist und Bewusstsein im Labor nicht unmittelbar beobachten. Wir können allerdings das Innenleben des Gehirns von außen betrachten und feststellen, welche Areale beim Denken, Fühlen und Erinnern aktiviert sind." Der Haken an der quantifizierenden Sicht der Dinge ist die Subjektivität des Selbstbewusstseins. Die unmittelbare IchErfahrung ist die elementarste Erfahrung unseres wachen Erlebens. Unsere persönlichen Empfindungen sind qualitative innere Zustände, so genannte Qualia, sagt der Magdeburger Neurophilosoph Michael Pauen. Der Geschmack von Vanilleeis auf der Zunge ist etwas anderes als die sich abbildende neuronale Aktivität beim Eisschlecken oder die chemische Zusammensetzung der Eiscreme. Und die innere Erschütterung beim Hören von Mozarts Requiem ist nicht identisch mit den neuronalen Mustern, die parallel zum Musikhören im Gehirn ablaufen. Es geht um Erfahrungen, die nur derjenigen Person zugänglich sind, deren innere Prozesse es sind - was die Frage aufwirft, ob die wissenschaftliche Entzauberung derartiger privater Aspekte des Bewusstseins, grundsätzlich möglich ist. Der Kölner Philosoph Günther Schulte folgert: "Das Psychische kann nicht Gegenstand der Naturwissenschaften sein", und fragt weiter: "Warum gibt' es überhaupt eine Parallelbeschreibung der Welt in der ersten Parson und eine objektivierende Beschreibung in der dritten Person? Ein Forscher sagt, die Versuchsperson 'sähe rot', wenn das Gehirn und die Netzhaut mit elektromagnetischen Weilen von der und der Länge beschossen werden. ber wie die' Person das Rot empfindet, ist von außen in einer wissenschaftlichen Versuchs-. anordnung nicht beobachtbar. Das sind zwei ganz unterschiedliche Perspektiven. Das Bestehen von zwei Parallelbeschreibungen ist das kosmische Rätsel schlechthin. Das Objektive ist nur eine, Seite der Welt - ich selbst bin auf der anderen." Schulte nennt die bisherigen Ergebnisse der Gehirnforschung zur Entschlüsselung der menschlichen Psyche "Neuromythen", weil sie "vorgaukeln, die Neurophysiologie hätte das Geheimnis Mensch bereits gelöst". Auch Gerhard Roth sieht die Problematik der Parallelbeschreibung: "Man kann aus der Perspektive der dritten Person vieles über das subjektive Bewusstsein nachvollziehen, aber die letztendliche Dualität, bleibt erhalten. Die subjektiven Phänomene selbst sind von außen nicht erkennbar." Roth insistiert: "Geist ist ein physikalischer Zustand. Wir wissen nicht, was das für ein physikalischer Zustand ist. Wir wissen nur, der Geist wird von bekannten physikalischen Zuständen entscheidend beeinflusst. Doch der genaue Zusammenhang ist heute genauso rätselhaft wie vor 300 Jahren die Elektrizität. Wir können die Erweiterung der heutigen Physik durch eine Physik des Geistes noch gar nicht absehen." Ob Geist ein physikalischer Zustand ist, wie Gerhard Roth und Francis Crick meinen, oder interaktionistische Dualisten wie John Eccles und Karl Popper Recht haben, die Geist und Körper in einem noch ungeklärten Beziehungsgefüge verbunden sehen, ist erkenntnistheoretisch ungeklärt, betont Michael Pauen.
