- Abstract
- Purpose - The general science portal "vascoda" merges structured, high-quality information collections from more than 40 providers on the basis of search engine technology (FAST) and a concept which treats semantic heterogeneity between different controlled vocabularies. First experiences with the portal show some weaknesses of this approach which come out in most metadata-driven Digital Libraries (DLs) or subject specific portals. The purpose of the paper is to propose models to reduce the semantic complexity in heterogeneous DLs. The aim is to introduce value-added services (treatment of term vagueness and document re-ranking) that gain a certain quality in DLs if they are combined with heterogeneity components established in the project "Competence Center Modeling and Treatment of Semantic Heterogeneity". Design/methodology/approach - Two methods, which are derived from scientometrics and network analysis, will be implemented with the objective to re-rank result sets by the following structural properties: the ranking of the results by core journals (so-called Bradfordizing) and ranking by centrality of authors in co-authorship networks. Findings - The methods, which will be implemented, focus on the query and on the result side of a search and are designed to positively influence each other. Conceptually, they will improve the search quality and guarantee that the most relevant documents in result sets will be ranked higher. Originality/value - The central impact of the paper focuses on the integration of three structural value-adding methods, which aim at reducing the semantic complexity represented in distributed DLs at several stages in the information retrieval process: query construction, search and ranking and re-ranking.

- Abstract
- Based on a decade's experience with the Alexandria Digital Library Project, seven issues are presented that arise in creating georeferenced digital libraries, and that appear to be intrinsic to the problem of creating any library-like information system that operates on georeferenced and geospatial resources. The first and foremost issue is providing discovery of georeferenced resources. Related to discovery are the issues of gazetteer integration and specialized ranking of search results. Strong data typing and scalability are implementation issues. Providing spatial context is a critical user interface issue. Finally, sophisticated resource access mechanisms are necessary to operate on geospatial resources.

- Abstract
- This article proposes a process to retrieve the URL of a document for which metadata records exist in a digital library catalog but a pointer to the full text of the document is not available. The process uses results from queries submitted to Web search engines for finding the URL of the corresponding full text or any related material. We present a comprehensive study of this process in different situations by investigating different query strategies applied to three general purpose search engines (Google, Yahoo!, MSN) and two specialized ones (Scholar and CiteSeer), considering five user scenarios. Specifically, we have conducted experiments with metadata records taken from the Brazilian Digital Library of Computing (BDBComp) and The DBLP Computer Science Bibliography (DBLP). We found that Scholar was the most effective search engine for this task in all considered scenarios and that simple strategies for combining and re-ranking results from Scholar and Google significantly improve the retrieval quality. Moreover, we study the influence of the number of query results on the effectiveness of finding missing information as well as the coverage of the proposed scenarios.

- "Das Fachportal wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördert. Partner in diesem Kooperationsprojekt sind die Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB), der als zuständiger Sondersammelgebietsbibliothek auch die Koordination obliegt, das Informationszentrum für Informationswissenschaft und -praxis (IZ) der Fachhochschule Potsdam, der Fachbereich Informationswissenschaften der Fachhochschule Potsdam, das Kompetenznetzwerk für Bibliotheken (KNB) beim Deutschen Bibliotheksverband Berlin und die Buchwissenschaft der FriedrichAlexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Nach dem Vorbild der virtuellen Fachbibliotheken bündelt b2i Fachinformation, Datenbanken und Bibliothekskataloge der Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Informationswissenschaften und macht sie über eine gemeinsame Oberfläche zugänglich. Eine integrierte Suchmaschine ermöglicht die gleichzeitige Recherche in einer Vielzahl von Nachweisinstrumenten für gedruckte und elektronische Materialien, qualitätskontrollierten Internetressourcen und Fakteninformationen. Zum Service gehören außerdem Bestellmöglichkeiten für Monografien-, Zeitschriften- und Aufsatzliteratur sowie für elektronische Materialien, die als Datei oder Druckausgabe angefordert werden können. Damit wird b2i für Interessierte aus Wissenschaft, Studium und Praxis zu einem interdisziplinären »one-stop-shop« der Fachinformation für die Informationswissenschaften.
