- Abstract
- Im Jänner 2014 startete das dreijährige, vom Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft geförderte Hochschulraumstrukturmittelprojekt e-Infrastructures Austria, das den koordinierten Ausbau und die Weiterentwicklung von Repositorieninfrastrukturen, ein strategisches Konzept für zukünftiges Forschungsdatenmanagement in Österreich sowie den Aufbau eines Wissensnetzwerks für die sichere Archivierung und Verbreitung von elektronischen Publikationen, Multimedia-Objekten und anderen digitalen Daten aus Forschung und Lehre verfolgt. Dabei geht es sowohl um die Errichtung von technischen Infrastrukturen als auch um die Schaffung einer Wissensbasis für zukünftige Serviceangebote in diesem Bereich. Grundlage für die erfolgreiche Abwicklung des Projekts war der rasche Aufbau eines österreichweiten Netzwerks von 25 Institutionen, davon 20 Universitäten. Die Zusammenarbeit erfolgt über Instrumente, die bei Bedarf erweiterbar sind: fünf Gremien und eine Governance, die Rollen und Verantwortlichkeiten regelt. Die identifizierten Themenbereiche werden in interdisziplinären und auf Zeit eingesetzten "Work-Package-Clustern" behandelt. Das Projekt bietet eine Plattform für zahlreiche Vernetzungsforen, Sitzungen und Weiterbildungseinheiten, in denen alle Bundesländer einbezogen sind, und zu denen nicht nur Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare, sondern auch weitere relevante Stakeholder, wie etwa Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus den lokalen IT-Einrichtungen, Forschungsservices und juristischen Abteilungen sowie Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, eingeladen sind. Somit greift das Projekt nicht nur thematisch, sondern auch organisatorisch weit über die konkrete Bibliotheksperspektive hinaus. Der Bericht informiert über die Projektziele von e-Infrastructures Austria, über die 2014 erfolgte Etablierung des Netzwerks und der Gremien sowie über die im ersten Jahr des Projekts in den Clustern erreichten Ergebnisse und die 2015 zu leistenden Aufgaben.

- Abstract
- 'Quality-controlled subject gateways' are Internet services which apply a rich set of quality measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to secure a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display a rich description of these resources with standards-based metadata. Regular checking and updating ensure good collection management. A main goal is to provide a high quality of subject access through indexing resources using controlled vocabularies and by offering a deep classification structure for advanced searching and browsing. This article provides an initial empirical overview of existing services of this kind, their approaches and technologies, based on proposed working definitions and typologies of subject gateways

- Abstract
- The main motivation of this chapter was to gather existing requirements and solutions, and to present a generic architectural design of semantic digital libraries. This design is meant to answer a number of requirements, such as interoperability or ability to exchange resources and solutions, and set up the foundations for the best practices in the new domain of semantic digital libraries. We start by presenting the library from different high-level perspectives, i.e., user (see Sect. 2) and metadata (see Sect. 1) perspective; this overview narrows the scope and puts emphasis on certain aspects related to the system perspective, i.e., the architecture of the actual digital library management system. We conclude by presenting the system architecture from three perspectives: top-down layered architecture (see Sect. 3), vertical architecture of core services (see Sect. 4), and stack of enabling infrastructures (see Sect. 5); based upon the observations and evaluation of the contemporary state of the art presented in the previous sections, these last three subsections will describe an in-depth model of the digital library management system.
