    Abstract
Museums are under pressure to deliver effective management and presentation of their collections, outreach to their public, cost effective use of all of their resources and the generation of maximum income. This book addresses such topics as what information means in the museum context, who uses it and what they need to do with it, developing a strategy for using information to benefit the museum, making the best use of the knowledge and skills of the museum staff, and acquiring the right mix of technology and managing it to support co-operation between people. Basic principles and practical advice is presented for integrated management of a whole range of information which museums need for productive use of human resources and for choosing and using technology effectively. The needs of small museums are given special attention and case studies show how a range of institutions have responded to the challenge.

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract

    Abstract
The Science & Society Picture Library (SSPL) has been established to market the images of 3 of Britain's museums: the Science Museum in London, the National Railway Museum in York, and the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford - collectively called the National Museum of Science and Industry). The images are drawn from many different collections within these museums and, as a result, SSPL represents one of the widest varieties of photographs, paintings, prints, posters and objects in the world. Discusses issues surrounding the SSPL's current task of developing an integrated cataloguing and indexing strategy by which metadata construction can proceed, and which will provide potential users with effective and standardized subject access to the many components of its holding

    Abstract
Investigates fundamental approaches to constructing integrated museum information systems focusing on creating a bridge from guided WWW exhibtis to unguided knowledge discovery through the construction of information systems that hold cultural heritage content. Examines the practical aspects of building information retrieval systems that are accessible through the WWW, systems that can be used as access points to digital collections as well as for their rich context

    Abstract
