    Abstract
    Informationsmanagement ist Management- wie Technikdisziplin und gilt als Teil der Unternehmensführung. Die Notwendigkeitvon Medienunternehmen, einem qualifizierten Informationsmanagement nachzukommen, gründet vor allem auf jüngsten Entwicklungen im sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und technischen Bereich. Eine landesweite Analyse aus Expertengesprächen mit Geschäftsführern und Technischen Leitern in österreichischen Medienunternehmen brachte folgende Ergebnisse: Medienunternehmen betreiben ein auf mehrere Abteilungen verteiltes, sog. funktionales Informationsmanagement. Die Institutionalisierung in Form eines Informationsmanagers oder einer IM-Abteilung wird von der Unternehmensgröße, entsprechenden Bewerbern oder auch der Finanzierung abhängig gemacht. In einem Branchenvergleich von Medienunternehmen mit Banken und Versicherungen ergaben sich in Bezug auf das Informationsmanagement viele Übereinstimmungen; allerdings übersteigt bei Medienunternehmen die Bedeutung der Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme eindeutig den Stellenwert der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik. In einem Ausblick wird Medienunternehmen die Schaffung eines Informationsmanagers empfohlen.

    Abstract
    Die traditionelle Mediendokumentation orientiert sich neu. In modernen Medienbetrieben steht nicht mehr die interne Sammlung, Aufbereitung und Verbreitung von Informationen im Vordergrund - so die traditionelle Umschreibung für Dokumentation -, sondern die bedarfsgerechte Beschaffung und Bewertung von weltweit verfügbaren Informationsressourcen. Medien-Informationsmanagement ist die Fortsetzung der Mediendokumentation mit neuen Methoden der Informationsorganisation. Der vorliegende Sammelband soll einen Eindruck davon vermitteln, welchen Veränderungen die Mediendokumentation in der Praxis ausgesetzt ist, weiche Methoden und Techniken in der Organisation von Medieninformationen heute angewendet werden und welche neuen Aktionsfelder und Arbeitsmärkte in diesem Bereich zu erwarten sind. Für Studierende, die als Medien-Informationsmanager arbeiten wollen, soll das Buch als Informationsquelle dienen, in weichen Segmenten der Medienbranche weiche Anforderungen gestellt und welche Qualifikationen erwartet werden. Praktikern der Mediendokumentation hilft das Buch, sich über Methoden und Entwicklungen in anderen Informationsstellen zu informieren. Im ersten Teil des Readers spannen die Beiträge von Referenten des Hamburger Kolloquiums der Mediendokumentation den Bogen von der journalistischen Kunst der Recherche und vom Bemühen der Deutschen Wochenschau um die Bewahrung des filmdokumentarischen Erbes über das Abenteuer Digitalisierung bei der Reorganisation von Pressearchiven bis hin zu Trends der Informationsrecherche und -verwaltung in Unternehmen der New Media-Branche. Im zweiten Teil des Readers sind über 25 Sach- und Erfahrungsberichte aus der mediendokumentarischen Praxis versammelt. Die Texte geben einen Einblick in die Arbeit der Pressearchive von Lokalzeitungen, informieren über die Situation und die Entwicklungen in Text- und Fotodokumentationen großer Presseverlage, vermitteln Einsichten in die aktuelle Praxis der Wort- und Filmdokumentation, beschreiben Trends der Informationsarbeit in der MultimediaBranche und berichten aus der Praxis des Wissensmanagements in Werbung und PR-Abteilungen.     Abstract
    This article presents an exploratory study of Blobgects, an experimental interface for an online museum catalog that enables social tagging and blogging activity around a set of cultural heritage objects held by a preeminent museum of anthropology and archaeology. This study attempts to understand not just whether social tagging and commenting about these objects is useful but rather whose tags and voices matter in presenting different expert perspectives around digital museum objects. Based on an empirical comparison between two different user groups (Canadian Inuit high-school students and museum studies students in the United States), we found that merely adding the ability to tag and comment to the museum's catalog does not sufficiently allow users to learn about or engage with the objects represented by catalog entries. Rather, the specialist language of the catalog provides too little contextualization for users to enter into the sort of dialog that proponents of Web 2.0 technologies promise. Overall, we propose a more nuanced application of Web 2.0 technologies within museums - one which provides a contextual basis that gives users a starting point for engagement and permits users to make sense of objects in relation to their own needs, uses, and understandings.

    Abstract
    Metadata schemes target resources as information-packages, without attention to the distinction between content and carrier. Most schema are derived without empirical understanding of the concepts that need to be represented, the ways in which terms representing the central concepts might best be derived, and how metadata descriptions will be used for retrieval. Research is required to resolve this dilemma, and much research will be required if the plethora of schemes that already exist are to be made efficacious for resource description and retrieval. Here I report the results of a preliminary study, which was designed to see whether the bibliographic concept of "the work" could be of any relevance among artifacts held by a museum. I extend the "works metaphor" from the bibliographic to the artifactual domain, by altering the terms of the definition slightly, thus: 1) instantiation is understood as content genealogy. Case studies of Etruscan artifacts from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology are used to demonstrate the inherence of the work in non-documentary artifacts.
