    Abstract
This highly practical handbook teaches you how to unlock the value of your existing metadata through cleaning, reconciliation, enrichment and linking and how to streamline the process of new metadata creation. Libraries, archives and museums are facing up to the challenge of providing access to fast growing collections whilst managing cuts to budgets. Key to this is the creation, linking and publishing of good quality metadata as Linked Data that will allow their collections to be discovered, accessed and disseminated in a sustainable manner. This highly practical handbook teaches you how to unlock the value of your existing metadata through cleaning, reconciliation, enrichment and linking and how to streamline the process of new metadata creation. Metadata experts Seth van Hooland and Ruben Verborgh introduce the key concepts of metadata standards and Linked Data and how they can be practically applied to existing metadata, giving readers the tools and understanding to achieve maximum results with limited resources. Readers will learn how to critically assess and use (semi-)automated methods of managing metadata through hands-on exercises within the book and on the accompanying website. Each chapter is built around a case study from institutions around the world, demonstrating how freely available tools are being successfully used in different metadata contexts. This handbook delivers the necessary conceptual and practical understanding to empower practitioners to make the right decisions when making their organisations resources accessible on the Web. Key topics include, the value of metadata; metadata creation - architecture, data models and standards; metadata cleaning; metadata reconciliation; metadata enrichment through Linked Data and named-entity recognition; importing and exporting metadata; ensuring a sustainable publishing model. This will be an invaluable guide for metadata practitioners and researchers within all cultural heritage contexts, from library cataloguers and archivists to museum curatorial staff. It will also be of interest to students and academics within information science and digital humanities fields. IT managers with responsibility for information systems, as well as strategy heads and budget holders, at cultural heritage organisations, will find this a valuable decision-making aid.

    Abstract
Often invisible to the broader society, the information disciplines determine much of what is available to these societies from their entire heritage of knowledge, culture, and entertainment. Containing the contributions of major researchers and practitioners, this third edition of the "Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences" reflects the growing convergence among the several disciplines that concern themselves with information and the cultural record. This work addresses these related disciplines in a way that demonstrates the unities across the fields and also recognizes their uniquely distinguishing characteristics. It covers a broad spectrum of related information disciplines, including: archival science; bibliography; document and genre theory; informatics; information systems; knowledge management; library and information science; museum studies; records management; and, social studies of information.

    Abstract
New technologies will underpin the future generation of library catalogues. To facilitate their role providing information, serving users, and fulfilling their mission as cultural heritage and memory institutions, libraries must take a technological leap; their standards and services must be transformed to those of the Semantic Web. Bibliographic Information Organization in the Semantic Web explores the technologies that may power future library catalogues, and argues the necessity of such a leap. The text introduces international bibliographic standards and models, and fundamental concepts in their representation in the context of the Semantic Web. Subsequent chapters cover bibliographic information organization, linked open data, methodologies for publishing library metadata, discussion of the wider environment (museum, archival and publishing communities) and users, followed by a conclusion.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Vom 22.-25. Oktober 2013 fand in Istanbul die European Conference on Information Literacy statt.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this article is to understand the meaning of museum objects from an information perspective. Links are made from Buckland's conceptual information framework as a semiotic to museum object as "document" and finally to user experience of these museum "documents". The aim is to provide a new lens through which museum studies researchers can understand museum objects and for LIS researchers to accept museum objects as another form of document to be studied. Design/methodology/approach - A conceptual and comparative analysis of Buckland's information typology as a semiotic. Outcome of analysis forms a model of understanding the museum object as a "document" that is accessed by users on a continuum of experience. Findings - Michael Buckland's information typology is insightful and useful for a broad understanding of what all heritage institutions have in common: the physical object. Buckland helps us see the museum as an information system, the museum object as a document, and the multidimensional use of the concept information and its semiotic ramifications. Originality/value - Buckland's typology is important to an understanding of the museum system and museum object in both LIS and museum studies. The concept of "document" opens up a broader perspective, which creates, rather than limits understandings of the human relationship with information. This expanded concept of "document" as sign/semiotic helps us understand user experience in ways not previously explored in the convergence of museums and information studies, from the practical to the theoretical. In this inclusive sense, Buckland's concept of document is a unifying theoretical concept for museums, libraries, and archives.

    Abstract
The paper presents the results of five years of application of Colon Classification (CC), 6. ed., in the Library of the Natural History Museum of Udine, Italy. Research confirms that CC still presents those positive characteristics that gave fame to it. The paper compares CC and the Dewey Decimal Classification by means of a special indicator (resolution power), and it shows how the use of CC could greatly help Italian cataloguers using Nuovo Soggettario, the new thesaurus developed and used at the Biblioteca Centrale Nazionale di Firenze, where Bibliografia Nazionale Italiana is also produced. Use of CC6 during these five years demonstrated that a faceted classification offers great advantages in organizing documents in a modern library, even if CC is surely in need of updating and revision.
