    Abstract
    Eine der größten Herausforderungen für alle technischen Anwendungen ist die sogenannte Mensch-Maschine-Schnittstelle, also der Problemkreis, wie der bedienende Mensch mit der zu bedienenden Technik kommunizieren kann. Waren die Benutzungsschnittstellen bis Ende der Achtziger Jahre vor allem durch die Notwendigkeit des Benutzers geprägt, sich an die Erfordernisse der Maschine anzupassen, so wurde mit Durchsetzung grafischer Benutzungsoberflächen zunehmend versucht, die Bedienbarkeit so zu gestalten, dass ein Mensch auch ohne größere Einarbeitung in die Lage versetzt werden sollte, seine Befehle der Technik - letztlich also dem Computer - zu übermitteln. Trotz aller Fortschritte auf diesem Gebiet blieb immer die Anforderung, der Mensch solle auf die ihm natürlichste Art und Weise kommunizieren können, mit menschlicher Sprache. Diese Anforderung gilt gerade auch für das Retrieval von Informationen: Warum ist es nötig, die Nutzung von Booleschen Operatoren zu erlernen, nur um eine Suchanfrage stellen zu können? Ein anderes Thema ist die Frage nach der Visualisierung von Wissenszusammenhängen, die sich der Herausforderung stellt, in einem geradezu uferlos sich ausweitenden Informationsangebot weiterhin den Überblick behalten und relevante Informationen schnellstmöglich finden zu können.

    Abstract
    Je mehr Informationen gleichzeitig, übersichtlich dargestellt und überwacht werden können, desto höher wird der Informations-Nutzen für einen Besucher oder potentiellen Kunden von ihnen sein. Da wir in einer Zeit der Informationsüberflutung leben, hilft uns das Information-Panel in Zukunft als multimediales Informationssystem. Ein Interface ist in unserem heutigen multimedialen Umfeld ein Bestandteil eines Systems, das dem Austausch von Informationen dient. Durch Information-Panels (sog. I-Panels) kann der Mensch mit Geräten interagieren, indem er sich wahlweise die für ihn masßgeschneiderten Informationen darstellen lässt. Für den Interface-Theoretiker Artur P. Schmidt können Information-Panels heute als eine Art Enzyklopädie für Informationen und Nachrichten aller Art dienen, wie sein Internet-Projekt "Der Wissensnavigator" belegt. Das Vorbild für multimediale Panels ist die geordnete Verbindung von Inhalten. Das Information-Panel als MenschMaschine-Interface kann zum "Punkt der Begegnung" oder "Kopplung zwischen zwei oder mehr Systemen" werden. Es übernimmt eine Übersetzung- und Vermittlungsfunktion.

    Im Gegensatz zu anderen Ansätzen, die Kommando-, Menü- oder Formblatt-orientierte Interaktionsparadigmen verwenden, schlagen wir für die Mensch-Maschine-Schnittstelle von Informationssystemen eine interaktive Informationsvisualisierung vor, bei der den geometrischen, räumlichen und graphischen Attributen der dargestellten Informationsobjekte besondere Bedeutung zukommt. Mehrdimensionale, computergraphische Informationsvisualisierungen des informationellen Kontextes des Informationsdialoges bilden das gemeinsame Kommunikations- und Interaktionsmedium zwischen den konzeptuellen Informationsmodellen und den Information-Retrieval-Funktionen des Systems sowie dem mentalen Modell, das der Benutzer von der Informationsmenge und den Informationsfunktionen des Informationssystems hat. Dabei besteht zwischen den visuell direkt manipulativen computergraphischen Informationsvisualisierungsobjekten der Benutzungsschnittstelle und den Informationsobjekten der Datenbasis eine funktionale Verknüpfung, die dem Benutzer durch die visuelle Ausprägung der graphischen Visualisierungsobjekte und die Verwendung von visuellen Metaphern vermittelt wird. Die automatischen Such- und Bewertungsfunktionen des Datenbank- oder Information-Retrieval-Systems werden ebenfalls in Form visuell direkt manipulativer Interaktionsmechanismen zur Verfügung gestellt.
