    Abstract
Describes how usability testing was used to validate design recommendations WWW navigation aids. The results show a need for navigational aids that are related to the particular Website and located beneath browser buttons. Usability criteria were established that limits page changes to 4 and search times to 60 seconds for information retrieval

    Abstract
A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback

    Abstract
Describes the design and implementation of a system for computer generation of linked HTML documents to support information retrieval and hypertext applications on the WWW. The system does not require text query input, nor any client or host processing other than hypertext linkage. The goal is to construct a fully automatic system in which original text documents are read and processed by a computer program that generates HTML files, which can be used immediately by Web browsers to search and retrieve the original documents. A user with a large collection of information: for instance, newspaper articles; can feed these documents to this program and produce directly the necessary files to establish WWW home page and related pages, to support interactive retrieval and distribution of the original documents

    Abstract
Investigates fundamental approaches to constructing integrated museum information systems focusing on creating a bridge from guided WWW exhibtis to unguided knowledge discovery through the construction of information systems that hold cultural heritage content. Examines the practical aspects of building information retrieval systems that are accessible through the WWW, systems that can be used as access points to digital collections as well as for their rich context

    Abstract
The ever growing popularity of the Internet as a source of information, coupled with the accompanying growth in the number of documents made available through the World Wide Web, is leading to an increasing demand for more efficient and accurate information retrieval tools. Numerous techniques have been proposed and tried for improving the effectiveness of searching the World Wide Web for documents relevant to a given topic of interest. The specification of appropriate keywords and phrases by the user is crucial for the successful execution of a query as measured by the relevance of documents retrieved. Lack of users' knowledge an the search topic and their changing information needs often make it difficult for them to find suitable keywords or phrases for a query. This results in searches that fail to cover all likely aspects of the topic of interest. We describe a scheme that attempts to remedy this situation by automatically expanding the user query through the analysis of initially retrieved documents. Experimental results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the query expansion scheure are presented.

    Abstract
Evaluates the performance of 8 major Internet search engines in answering 21 real reference questions and 5 made up subject questions. Reports on the retrieval and relevancy ranking abilities of the search engines. Concludes that the search engines did not produce good results for the reference questions unlike for the subject questions. The best engines are identified by type of questions, with Infoseek best for the subject questions, and OpenText best for refrence questions

    Abstract
The days of the traditional abstracting and indexing services are waning, as abstracts and bibliographic data become commodities. However, there are tremedous opportunities for those organizations willing to look beyond the status quo to the new possibilities enabled by the latest wave of advanced technologies. Those who own content need to focus on the delivery mechanisms and new markets that technology can provide. Features like automatic extraction of key concepts or names, collaborative filtering to help with trend analysis, and visualization techniques can take information past the retrieval stage and into the management area

    Abstract
Conceptual Knowledge Markup Language (CKML), an application of XML, is a new standard being promoted for the specification of online conceptual knowledge (Kent and Shrivastava, 1998). CKML follows the philosophy of Conceptual Knowledge Processing (Wille, 1982), a principled approach to knowledge representation and data analysis, which advocates the development of methodologies and techniques to support people in their rational thinking, judgement and actions. CKML was developed and is being used in the WAVE networked information discovery and retrieval system (Kent and Neuss, 1994) as a standard for the specification of conceptual knowledge
