- Abstract
- Schon zur Wende ins 20. Jahrhundert zweifelte der belgische Privatgelehrte Paul Otlet an der Zukunft des Buches und der Bibliothek. Statt dessen begann er damit, eine Dokumentation und Neuorganisation des Weltwissens anzulegen, und mittels eines Karteikartensystems (Répertoire Bibliographique Universel) zu vernetzen. Dieses Projekt eines flexiblen, abfrageorientierten Wissensbestandes in einem 'Hypermedium' (Otlet) besetzte jene technologische Leerstelle, die inzwischen eine die bibliothekarische Epoche aufsprengende neue Wissenskultur der digitalen Medialität produziert hat.

- Abstract
- Bei geschichtlicher Betrachtungsweise können wir erkennen, daß vor etwa 100 Jahren die Verdopplungsrate der Literatur mit rund 15 Jahren die zunehmende Verteilung von Büchern und Zeitschriften auf ein nationales Bibliothekssystem notwendig machte. Diese Verdopplungsrate erzwingt heute als nächsten Schritt ein internationales digitales Bibliothekssystem. Das stetig wachsende verteilte Wissen führte bereits im Jahr 1830 zur klassisischen bibliografischen Dokumentation, die ausgelöst durch den 'Weinberg-Report' im Jahre 1963 den ersten Schritt hin zur digitalen Bibliothek tat. Eine modernen Bibliothekswissenschaft muß ein völlig neues Wissensgebäude auf der Basis der Informationstheorie aufbauen, um die Folgen abschätzen zu können, die der Umbruch von der alten papierbasierten Bibliothek hin zur modernen digitalen Bibliothek mit sich bringt. Wie Fritz Milkau im Jahre 1928, so benötigen auch wir ein modernes Handbuch der Bibliothekswissenschaft. Dieses muß von allen interessierten und kompetenten Fachleuten auf dem Gebiet des Archiv-, Bibliotheks-, Dokumentations- und Informationswesens gemeinsam geschrieben werden, um eine gemeinsame wissenschaftliche Basis zu begründen. Ein solches modernes Handbuch kann natürlich nur ein digitales Handbuch mit multimedialen Qualitäten sein, also eine Wissensbank für Lehrende, Lernende und Praktiker

- Abstract
- Zwischen dem Bibliotheksbereich und der Dokumentation gab und gibt es in Deutschland traditionell zahlreiche Spannungen, Missverständnisse und Argwohn, aber auch erfolgreiche Kooperationen und die Integration dokumentarischer und bibliothekarischer Arbeit in großem Stil. Die vorliegende geschichtliche Betrachtung der Entwicklung der Dokumentation in Deutschland während der letzten gut hundert Jahre versucht, Bedingungen, Gründe und Erklärungen für das gespannte Verhältnis aufzudecken und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die Trennung längst nicht mehr zeitgemäß und im Grunde bereits überwunden ist.

- Abstract
- Als Otlet und La Fontaine um 1900 den Begriff Bibliographie durch den moderneren Begriff Dokumentation ersetzten und im Sinne einer Dokumentationswissenschaft von Dokumentologie sprachen, um damit auch den Weg zu öffnen, immer mehr "Neue Medien", wie Lochkartensysteme, Filme, Mikrofiches, Schallplatten, Magnetbandaufzeichnungen, etc. in die bibliothekarische Wissensbewahrung zu integrieren, da geriet das Bibliothekswesen in eine Zerreißprobe, die für Deutschland besonders nachhaltig war. Eigentlich war es nur ein Zeichen dafür, dass die Bibliothekswissenschaft plötzlich eine so große Dynamik bekam, dass ein Teil ihrer Vertreter sich immer stärker an den rasanten Entwicklungen dieser "Neuen Medien", dann an den informationsverarbeitenden Maschinen und an der Digitalisierung orientierten, während sich andere um so mehr darum bemühten, alte Erfahrungen und das bereits etablierte Wissen nicht dem Untergang preis zu geben. Diese Zerreißprobe hat zunächst auch international eine tiefe Spaltung zwischen Dokumentation und Bibliothekswesen hervorgebracht. Die "alte" Bibliothek erschien zunehmend "verstaubt" gegenüber der modernen Dokumentation, die ihrerseits allerdings einen Namen trug, der sich als Berufsbild in der breiten Bevölkerung nie so recht durchsetzen konnte. Heute hat die Digitale Bibliothek beide wieder vereinigt und damit das Berufsbild Dokumentar auf einen speziellen Bereich, der Erschließung nicht publizierter Dokumente, neben dem Archivar fokussiert.

- Abstract
- Ziel und Methoden der Information und Dokumentation in der Bundestagsbilbiothek werden dargestellt. Die Einheit von "Bibliothek" und "Dokumentation" im Deutschen Bundestag wird verdeutlicht und die Ursache des hohen Leistungsstandes der Parlamentsbibliothek erklärt. Dabei wird das Gülichsche Katalog- und Dokumentationssystem in seinen wichtigsten Funktionen theoretisch beschrieben und einer breiten bibliothekarisch-dokumentarischen Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Dies geschieht in der Überzeugung, daß dieses System auch für andere Bibliotheken soiwe Informations- und Dokumentationsstellen geeignet und effektiv ist

- Abstract
- Die vorliegenden Ausführungen versuchen Antworten zu geben, auf die zentrale Frage der sich entwickelnden Informationsgesellschaft: Welche Konzepte beschreibt der Begriff 'Elektronische Bibliothek' im Jahr 1996 für Nutzer und Anbieter von Informationsangeboten im Internet? Hierbei ist von Bedeutung, daß die virtuelle Bibliothek Internet bereits heute ein erhebliches Informationspotential besitzt, das jedoch gegenwärtig noch nicht adäquat genutzt werden kann. Um diese Situation zu verbessern und zu optimieren, müssen einheitliche Nutzungskonzepte entwickelt und implementiert werden. Bei der Diskussion dieser Frage dürfen auch und gerade Bibliotheken nicht vergessen werden, da sie neben der virteullen Bibliothek Internet selbst und neben Internet-basierten Informationssystemen eine zentrale Rolle spielen
