    Abstract
A movement for a subject heading code to standardize LCSH and their usage gained considerable attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Examines the reasons for the lack of progress in this project, which include: the lack of any plan from the LoC which could serve as a philosophical foundation for either a subject access system or the changes made to it; the belief that online catalogues make a controlled subject vocabulary obsolete; and professional ignorance, apathy, and negativism. Warns that, in an increasingly complex age, lack of standardization of any technical system or process tends to lead to the demise of that system or process

    Abstract
Four policy proposals are made which affect LC's subject headings for science: a system of "gathering levels" for botany and microbiology similar to the one developed for zoology; a system of secondary headings for geology of a place; guidelines for formulating names of chemical compounds and their groups; and abandonment of "reverse patterns."

    Abstract
USE, a new subject approach particularly designed for automated use on the Internet and elsewhere, is proposed. This system combines a fixed linguistic component with a simple and consistent structure for combination of terms, suitable for multinational, multicultural and multilingual use. Examples of its use in practice are given. An international implementation approach for USE is provided

    Abstract
Concerns expressed in a 1994 essay on catalogues and the Superhighway have still not been addressed and 3 new questions now arise: (1) Is there a real need for bibliographic control of the Internet? (2) Since we do not truly own Internet information, cannot label or shelve it, can it truly be catalogued? (3) How would efforts to control its retrieval by cataloguing be affected by its lack of constancy?
