- Abstract
- In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

- Abstract
- At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

- Abstract
- In the Netherlands the Gemeenschappelijke Onderwerps Ontsluiting (Standard Subject Indexing) schedules were developed for libraries using the national online catalogue. At Leiden University's Institute voor Oost-Europees Recht en Ruslandkunde use of both UDC and GOO schedules enabled a comparison to be made of the systems. A study of approx. 1.400 titles showed that GOO was more effective in retrieving relevant documents, whereas UDC was more suited for compiling subject bibliographies. The best of both schemes should be combined for optimal retrieval

- Abstract
- Retrieval techniques may be based on the full text of documents, or on descriptors selected from a thesaurus. The latter approach constitutes an attempt to bridge the gap between demand and documents, which causes problems if demand cannot be forecast. Building up a thesaurus involves choosing the method of collecting descriptors, choosing the actual descriptors and making the system easily accessible to users. Classification and a classified catalogue are essential to the organisation of knowledge. Rules for the formation of classes have developed out of natural systems of classification. Chain indexing greatly aids the formation of the subject index. UDC and DDC are used in most documentation centres in the Netherlands. Public libraries mostly use SISO, a Dutch universal classification system

- At Rotterdam Port Authority an information database has been created with approx. 100.000 full text documents online. Topic software has been used to identify word groups and refine search strategies to optimize precision and recall. The software guides users from selected terms to other relevant word combinations. Although the system would benefit from further refinement, users are generally satisfied. The database includes a number of foreign language documents but lacks a thesaurus of foreign terms

- Abstract
- Developments in electronic communication technology have meda online databases a normal part of library collections. To provide users with direct access to Internet resources the Dutch Royal Library has cooperated with several university libraries in the Netherlands to develop the Nederlandse Basisclassificatie Web. Subject specialists select sources, add English summaries and NBW code, and input them to the online database. A Web desk and training workshops have been provided to assist users, and improvements to the system will simplify search procedures

- Abstract
- Amstelveen Public Library in the Netherlands introduced the online Kid's Catalog in 1997 to enable young users to access the library's catalogue. The system was developed in the United States and has been translated into Dutch for use in Amstelveen. The system enables users to access the catalogue through a menu of icons or by typing in author, title and subject headings. The system can recognise typing errors and offer corrected headings. The system is extremely popular both with children and adults

- Abstract
- In 1989 Brabant Catholic University was the first university in the Netherlands to provide an online campus information service. Since that date other universities in the Netherlands have inaugurated systems providing a wide range of information services, including access to the respective library's catalogues. Ease of use varies from system to system and there is an urgent need to standardize system commands. Libraries can provide useful help in creating such services. In return ther services provide a useful adjunct to the organization's library
