    Im zweiten Teil geht es dann darum, wie ein Mensch rechnet. Hier hat Devlin uns einige handfeste Überraschungen zu bieten. Es beginnt mit Forschungsergebnissen über die angeborenen oder in den ersten Lebenswochen erworbenen Zahlenfähigkeiten, einschließlich der zugehörigen Forschungsmethode. Schließlich kann man ein wenige Wochen altes Baby nicht fragen, ob es zwischen 1 und 2 und viele einen Unterschied macht. Jedenfalls wissen diese Kleinen schon, dass 1+1=2 ist und nicht viele, und dass noch 1 übrig bleibt, wenn man von 2 wieder 1 wegnimmt. Weiter geht es mit dem, was der Autor Straßenmathematik nennt. Die Kinder, die auf den Straßenmärkten in Südamerika Waren verkaufen, können auch ohne oder fast ohne Schulbildung sehr wohl ausrechnen, was ein Kunde zu zahlen hat und wie viel Geld er zurückbekommt. Allerdings rechnen diese Kinder ganz anders, als man es in der Schule lernt! Stellt man ihnen genau dieselben Aufgaben wie auf dem Markt in Form einer Mathematikarbeit, so versagen sie völlig, weil sie ihre Straßenmathematik nicht auf die Schulaufgaben übertragen können und damit auf die Rechenregeln angewiesen sind, die sie (vielleicht) in der Schule gelernt, aber nicht verstanden haben. Angeregt durch diese Beobachtungen, hat man ähnliche Experimente auch in den USA gemacht, indem man Leute beim Einkaufen im Supermarkt beobachtete. Hier besteht ein häufiges Problem darin, Preise hei unterschiedlichen Packungsgrößen zu vergleichen. Stehen verschiedene Füllmengen zu verschiedenen Preisen zur Auswahl, muss man einen Dreisatz anwenden. Hier ist es wieder ganz ähnlich: Die Leute konnten mit großer Sicherheit die günstigeren Produkte auswählen, aber dasselbe Problem als Rechenaufgabe kaum lösen. Leider sagt Devlin nichts darüber, wie man diese Erkenntnisse in den Schulunterricht einbauen müsste, damit die Leute vielleicht einen besseren Zugang zur Mathematik bekommen könnten oder die in der Schule gelernten Regeln auch im Alltag anwendbar würden. Insofern bleibt die ganze Geschichte ein bisschen offen, Platz genug zum Nachdenken also."
