- Abstract
- Proposes an alternative way in assisting users in finding information on the WWW. Since the Web is made up many Web servers, instead of searching all the Web servers, proposes that ech server does its own housekeeping. A software agent named SiteHelper is designed to act as a housekeeper for the Web server and as a helper for a Web user to find relevant information at a particular site. In order to assist the Web user in finding relevant information at the local site, SiteHelper interactively and incrementally learns about the Web user's areas of interest and aids them accordingly. To provide such intelligent capabilities, SiteHelper deploys enhanced HCV with incremental learning facilities as its learning and inference engines

- Abstract
- Reports results of a study, undertaken at the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library, Missouri University at Columbia, to derive a set of evaluation criteria to assist librarians in determining the positive and negative aspects of alternative Web sites available for searching MEDLINE via the WWW. A set of searches were used systematically to compare MEDLINE Web sites, including: Avicenna; America Online; HealthGate; PubMed; Medscape; and Physicians' Online. Focuses on the principle features of the search engines used in the sites: default fields and operators; MeSH; subheadings; stopwords protected in MeSH; truncation and stemming. Describes the group processes used to arrive at the evaluation criteria and some general conclusions which will help librarians in directing their users to a particular MEDLINE site

- Presents an overview of Web-based resources for online user instruction on the Internet. Describes free resources which teach Web browsing such as Netscape's online handbook, Microsoft's tutorial on its Internet Ecplorer Web browser and Global Villages's Internet Tour. Library specific instruction is provided by many libraries who have developed training materials which can be accessed via the Web; these include Augsburg College (http://aug3.augsburg.edu/library/aib), the Chicago Library System (http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/cls) and the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (http://www.bccls.org/www/support.html). The Internet Education Project Web site allows librarians to display and share instructional materials they have developed. - Abstract
- Presents an approach that integrates searching and browsing in a manner that improves both paradigms. When browsing is the primary task, it enables semantic content-based tailoring of Web maps in both the generation as well as the visualization phases. When search is the primary task, it enables contextualization of the results by augmenting them with the documents' neighbourhoods. This approach is embodied in WebCutter, a client-server system fully integrated with Web software. WebCutter consists of a map generator running off a standard Web server and a map visualization client implemented as a Java applet runalble from any standard Web browser and requiring no installation or external plug-in application. WebCutter is in beta stage and is in the process of being integrated into the Lotus Domino application product line

- To access a remote catalogue the searcher can use the Z39.50 standard as interface, which requires appropriate software; or for databases accessible on the WWW use a common gateway interface. The multibase access advantage of Z39.50 can also be obtained through a Web navigator by inserting a Web server/Z39.50 client software connector: this can be located either on the search site, in an intermediary position or on the database site, so determining the range of databases which can be searched. Z39.50 also offers interesting possibilities for joint and local cataloguing: multibase searching can equally be realised on intranets

- Abstract
- To improve searching, filtering and processing of information on the Web, a common effort is made in the direction of metadata, defined as machine understandable information about Web resources or other things. In particular, the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) aims at providing a common syntax to emerging metadata formats. Proposes the Structured Graph Format (SGF) an XML compliant markup language based on structured graphs, for capturing Web sites' structure. Presents SGMapper, a client-site tool, which aims to facilitate navigation in large Web sites by generating highly interactive site maps using SGF metadata
