    Abstract
    Denken, Intelligenz, Sprache, Bewußtsein - sind sie alle das Ergebnis von neuronalen Selektionsprozessen? Werden Gedankeninhalte, Wörter, Handlungsmuster vorsortiert, ehe sie uns überhaupt bewußt werden? Ist unser Gehirn eine Darwin-Maschine? William Calvin vermittelt in diesem originellen und spannenden Buch eine neue Sicht auf die Arbeitsweise des menschlichen Gehirns und die Entstehung von Intelligenz. Seine unterhaltsame Führung endet mit einem Blick in die Zukunft. Denn die Evolution der Intelligenz ist keineswegs beendet. Aber sie scheint nun eine nichtbiologische Richtung zu nehmen: An die Seite der natürlichen Intelligenz tritt die künstliche, und der Bau wirklich intelligenter Maschinen ist für Calvin nur eine Frage der Zeit.     Abstract
    Was ist die Natur mathematischer Objekte? Existieren sie unabhängig vom Gehirn des Menschen, oder sind sie das Produkt der Gehirnaktivität? Kann schließlich echte künstliche Intelligenz aus unbelebter Materie entstehen? Diese und weitere Fragen bis hin zum Bereich der Ethik werden in Dialogform von zwei hervorragenden Fachleuten der Mathematik und der Neurowissenschaften in diesem Buch diskutiert. Die Dialogform der Darstellung soll den Leser zum eigenen Nachdenken über den bis auf Plato zurückgehenden Problemkreis anregen. Dafür relevante Erkenntnisse der modernen mathematischen und neurobiologischen Hirnforschung werden kompetent und allgemeinverständlich dargestellt.

    Abstract
    Seit den Anfängen in den 50er Jahren haben die Forschungen zum Thema Computer und Gehirn einen beispiellosen Aufschwung erlebt. In der letzten Dekade unseres Jahrhunderts scheint das Gehirn zum Paradigma neuartiger lernfähiger und selbstorganisierender Systeme zu werden, die mit den programmierbaren Rechenmaschinen von einst nur noch bedingte Ähnlichkeit aufweisen. Kann man die Funktionsweise des menschlichen Gehirns überhaupt mit der eines Computers vergleichen? Was wissen wir über das Leben, und läßt sich dieses Wissen für die Konstruktion neuer, leistungsfähiger 'intelligenter' Systeme nutzen?
