    Abstract
    Dieses Buch handelt vom Wesen der menschlichen Intelligenz und davon, was es bedeuten würde, über 'Maschinen-Intelligenz' zu verfügen. Schon immer war es Ziel und Wunschtraum genialer Denker und Erfinder, die 'denkende Maschine' als Hilfsapparat für den Menschen zu konstruieren. Erst in unserer Zeit nähern wir uns mit Unterstützung des Computers der Verwirklichung der in der Tat hochfliegenden Pläne. Die Öffentlichkeit hat die Künstliche Intelligenz entdeckt, ist aber nicht ganz sicher, was das eigentlich ist. Schließlich müssen wir die Frage, was Computer können, parallel zu der Frage betrachten, WAS MENSCHEN KÖNNEN. Es fällt daher bis heute selbst den Fachleuten außerordentlich schwer, den Computer-Maschinen das Denken beizubringen.

    KI kann die Forschung nicht nur beschleunigen, sondern auch die Qualität verbessern, sagt der Chef des Deutschen Forschungszentrums für Künstliche Intelligenz. Nach dem Einzug in Fabriken, Büros, Autos und Wohnungen kommt Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) jetzt auch zunehmend in die Forschungslabore. Immer mehr Wissenschaftler nutzten Roboter oder digitale Assistenzsysteme, um Routinearbeiten bei Recherchen und Analysen sowie Experimente zu erledigen, sagte der Chef des Deutschen Forschungszentrums für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), Professor Wolfgang Wahlster, der Deutschen Presse-Agentur in Saarbrücken. Dies revolutioniere nicht nur das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten: "Es bietet auch die Chance, eine neue, bislang unerreichte Qualitätsstufe in der Forschung zu erklimmen", sagte der 65-Jährige.     Die Interpreten Künstlicher Intelligenz sind konfrontiert mit einem Paradoxon. Die praktischen Wirkungen Künstlicher Intelligenz sind minimal.     Abstract
    Das neue Lexikon der Mathematik bietet in insgesamt ca. 17.000 Stichworteinträgen einen umfassenden Überblick über die moderne Mathematik, ihre Fachterminologie und ihre Anwendungen. Die behandelten Fachgebiete reichen von so klassischen Fachgebieten wie Geometrie, Zahlentheorie oder auch Geschichte der Mathematik über Numerische Mathematik, Graphentheorie, Versicherungsmathematik und Optimierung bis hin zu modernsten Anwendungen wie etwa Wavelets, kryptographischen und Codierungsverfahren oder Neuronale Netze. Besondere Berücksichtigung fanden bei der Konzeption des Lexikons die Biographien bedeutender Mathematikerinnen und Mathematiker, von der Antike (Diophant, Euklid) bis hin zur Gegenwart (Collatz, Faltings, Hirzebruch). Dadurch wurde dem Umstand Rechnung getragen, dass gerade in der Mathematik eine Fülle von Verfahren, Methoden oder auch Lehrsätzen existiert, die nach Persönlichkeiten benannt sind, von denen der Leser gerne etwas mehr erfahren möchte, so z.B. 'abelsche Gruppe', 'Satz des Pythagoras', 'euklidischer Algorithmus' oder 'Gaußsche Normalverteilung'
