    Abstract
    Die Geschichte der Information beginnt in einer Zeit, die unserer nicht unähnlicher sein könnte. Von der Entwicklung der sprechenden Trommeln zu den ersten Alphabeten und natürlich der Schrift, ist die Information einen weiten Weg gegangen. Eine höchst interessante und informative Geschichte. Blut, Treibstoff, Lebensprinzip - in seinem furiosen Buch erzählt Bestsellerautor James Gleick, wie die Information zum Kernstück unserer heutigen Zivilisation wurde. Beginnend bei den Wörtern, den "sprechenden" Trommeln in Afrika, über das Morsealphabet und bis hin zur Internetrevolution beleuchtet er, wie die Übermittlung von Informationen die Gesellschaften prägten und veränderten. Gleick erläutert die Theorien, die sich mit dem Codieren und Decodieren, der Übermittlung von Inhalten und dem Verbreiten der Myriaden von Botschaften beschäftigen. Er stellt die bekannten und unbekannten Pioniere der Informationsgesellschaft vor: Claude Shannon, Norbert Wiener, Ada Byron, Alan Turing und andere. Er bietet dem Leser neue Einblicke in die Mechanismen des Informationsaustausches. So lernt dieser etwa die sich selbst replizierende Meme kennen, die "DNA" der Informationen. Der Besitz an Wissen wird mit unvorstellbarer Geschwindigkeit vergrößert werden, Informationen über Ereignisse an entfernten Orten werden durch Telegrafie, Fernsprecher und Fernsehen überallhin transportiert werden, diesewerden in Computern miteinander verknüpft und auf ihre Wirkung analysiert, das gesamte Wissen wird in riesigen, allen Menschen zugänglichen Informationsbanken gespeichert sein. Zwar gibt es Komponenten des menschlichen Verhaltens, die unveränderbar sind, aber es ist sicher, daß sich der Mensch in einer anderen Umwelt anders verhalten wird. Die informierte Gesellschaft ist eine Umwelt, deren Wirkung auf den Menschen bisher noch nicht untersucht werden konnte. Das zukünftig zu erwartende Informiertsein über die Konsequenzen menschlichen Verhaltens ermöglicht es, spezielle Verhaltensmuster an deren Konsequenzen zu bewerten, nicht - wie es bisher üblich war - durch Vergleich mit der Tradition. Der kritische Blick orientiert sich dann weniger an der Vergangenheit, mehr an der Zukunft. Diese veränderte Blickrichtung ergibt sich zwangsläufig bei Menschen, deren Schicksal die Permanenz der Veränderung ist. Das Grundgesetz wird sein: Zukunft geht vor Vergangenheit! Wo immer eine aus der Vergangenheit stammende Denkweise in Kollision gerät mit Entwürfen, welche die Verbesserung menschlicher Existenz in der Zukunft ermöglichen, muß die Denkweise der Vergangenheit zurücktreten. Nichts zwingt den Menschen, die ungeheuren Möglichkeiten der Wissenschaft und Technik zu seinem Unheil zu verwenden, alle Wege sind offen, Wissenschaft und Technik zu seinem Wohle zu verwenden."

    Abstract
    The flood of information brought to us by advancing technology is often accompanied by a distressing sense of "information overload," yet this experience is not unique to modern times. In fact, says Ann M. Blair in this intriguing book, the invention of the printing press and the ensuing abundance of books provoked sixteenth- and seventeenth-century European scholars to register complaints very similar to our own. Blair examines methods of information management in ancient and medieval Europe as well as the Islamic world and China, then focuses particular attention on the organization, composition, and reception of Latin reference books in print in early modern Europe. She explores in detail the sophisticated and sometimes idiosyncratic techniques that scholars and readers developed in an era of new technology and exploding information.

    Abstract
    Die vorliegende Monografie ist eine Geschichte der Informationstheorie Claude Elwood Shannons. Die dafür umfangreiche Auswertung bislang unbekannter Primärquellen wäre ohne der Geduld und der Unterstützung vieler Institutionen und Personen nicht möglich gewesen. Etwas mehr als acht Monate intensiver Forschung in verschiedenen Archiven waren nötig, um die Entstehung der Informationstheorie zwischen 1940 und 1949 vergleichend und schrittweise rekonstruieren zu können. Mehr als die Hälfte dieser Zeit war ein vergebliches Suchen in Findmitteln, Karteikarten, Datenbanken und Akten ohne weiterführende Hinweise. Heute - im Rückblick - kann ich verstehen, warum die Geschichte der Informationstheorie bislang noch nicht geschrieben werden konnte: Die Heterogenität der Akten an den unterschiedlichsten Orten, die an den relevanten Stellen geradezu fragmentarische Systematik der Findmittel und die vergangenen Sicherheitsinteressen der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika während des Kalten Krieges hatten es Historikern bislang noch nicht ermöglicht, die interessante, aber auch geheime Geschichte der Informationstheorie Claude Shannons einer interessierten Öffentlichkeit vorzustellen ...

    "Wissen ist mehr als bloße Information. Seit der Karriere des Begriffs Informationsgesellschaft wird dieser Unterschied wieder sehr bewußt. Nur unter ganz bestimmten Umständen kann aufgenommene und verarbeitete Information zu Wissen kondensieren. Diese Umstände sind zu einem Teil von der individuellen Geschichte des Einzelnen abhängig. Zu einem sehr bedeutenden Teil sind sie aber auch von den sozialen Strukturen, kulturellen Umgebungen und somit von den gesellschaftspolitischen Rahmenbedingungen abhängig. Dazu gehören beispielsweise die Arten der Wissensvermittlung in Familie und Schulen, die pädagogischen Methoden, die Hochschulstruktur (Elite- oder Massenuniversität), Lehrpläne und Curricula etc." "Ist die Wissensgesellschaft das Ziel, dann ist auch ein neues, umfassenderes Verständnis von Wissenschaft notwendig. Während in der modernen Wissenschaft "wissenschaftliches" Wissen sehr verkürzt als lediglich "rationales" Faktenwissen wahrgenommen wird, muss die Wissensgesellschaft Wissen in all seinen Formen wahrnehmen. Auch soziale Kompetenz und moralisch-ethisches Wissen stellen Wissen dar. Alle Wissensformen bestimmen gemeinsam den Lebensstil des Einzelnen und befähigen ihn zum Handeln. Der Einzelne wird immer häufiger mit Problemen konfrontiert, deren Lösung es erfordert, dass er flexibel auf verschiedene Wissensformen zurückgreifen kann. Dies ist die Grundlage nachhaltigen Handelns"
