    Abstract
The authors are students of librarianship in the faculty of philosophy at Ljubljana University, Slovenia. Users were asked to describe their library visits and summarise what was most helpful and least helpful about the service received. In the list of best practices, the most frequent feature was that the staff member really listened (58,9%). Other aspects of most helpful behaviour (e.g. using different body language, showing genuine interest, willingness to investigate further) occured in less than 40% of the interviews. 3 features of least helpful behaviour were listed in more than 30% of the cases; not asking the user anything about the question and making no effort to determine the specific need, not telling the user what he/she was doing, making no effort to determine whether the user had found the relevant information

    Abstract
Examines the formal relationships between global and local indices of the effectiveness of the processing of information in automated information systems, including, for example, the rationale use of information resources, and reliability. Shows that the global effectiveness does not exceed the local effectiveness of the elements of the system in question

    Abstract
The 1st International CDS/ISIS congress was organizes by the Columbian Association of CDS/ISIS users in cooperation with the Unesco regional office in Caracas, Venezuela. Reviews the programme including a detailed description of the CDS/ISIS library automation system which has 16.000 registered users and which can be run under MS-DOS, VAS/VMS, UNIX/INTEL or Windows. Written in the C++ programming language the system's main features unclude: portability; maintainability; upward compatibility; and client-server architecture implementation. Abstract
Discusses the history of the development of thesauri and considers the feasibility of using them as a means for the description of knowledge systems. Contemporary computing technology makes it possible to compile highly effective thesauri, which can be used as a tool for the development of complex databases and knowledge systems

    Abstract
Presents a short review of fundamental knowledge representation methods: logical, graphical, structured and procedural notational schemes. Special attention is given to notational schemes' classifications and the characteristics on which classifications were done. Knowledge representation is one of the central problems in artificial intelligence, but a complete theory of it does not exist, and it remains a set of methods that are used, with more or less success, in attempts to solve a given problem. The characteristics of knowledge schemes play a significant role

    Abstract
Examines the shortcomings of traditional indexing and classification methods. Artificial intelligence systems may provide the answer to the problem of improving indexing and classification effectiveness. presents a conceptual modelling method which can be used as a basis for conceptual indexing, i.e. a model of knowledge structures suitable for automatic text analysis and, consequently, for compilation of association thesauri for text databases

    Abstract
Information technology has brought with it the problem of protecting authors' rights related to copyrighted works on electronic media. Describes a new system of labelling copyrighted works on the Internet, called DOI, developed in the USA. At the presentation at the bookfair in Frankfurt, 250.000 works were leabelled with DOI. The system is universal and enables the inclusion of current standard identifiers (ISBN, ISSN, SICI). The fact that a DOI identifier stays 'glued on' forever, makes the identification of the carrier of copyright possible at any moment. The DOI system presents the infrastructure system for trading in and use of copyrighted works over the Internet in the third millennium

    Abstract
The Slovak Scientific and Technical Information Centre is the official distributor of the CDS/ISIS library automation package in Slovakia. Discusses the use of the system which has at present over 500 registered users, although not all of them have the latest version and, consequently, cannot take advantage of all its features. Presents a brief description of the package and draws attention to some of the additional modules which, for example, make it possible to convert the database format of the data into the ISO 2709 format or UNIMARC format

    Abstract
Discusses the use of the terms 'classification' and 'typology' and examines their essence and mutual relationship. Points out that these two terms are often, and quite incorrectly; used as synonyms. Argues that the difference between typology and classification can be summed up as follows: typology can be described as an analysis of characteristics of objects and subsequent determination of the individual types of the objects in question; classificatio, on the other hand, can be defined as grouping together of objects according to their type
