    Abstract
    Compares and contrasts the essential differences between traditional and digital information media, reexamines the role of OPACs, refines the definition of library catalogues, and advocates the addition of Internet resources within the OPAC. Describes the building of the Alex Catalog, as part of the Alcuin Project at North Carolina State University, a catalogue of Internet resources in the format of MARC format records.     Abstract
    Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
    Reports results of a questionnaire survey of cataloguers, conducted over the AUTOCAT Internet discussion group, to determine those areas of cataloguing for which the Internet is a valuable tool and those areas for which it is not as useful. Respondents indicated 4 areas in which cataloguers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloguing documentation and publications, and authority work. Cataloguers who found access to other libraries' OPACs did so for the following reasons: assigning call numbers and subject headings; finding full cataloguing copy from other libraries; enriching their local catalogue with notes present in records in other libraries; finding copy for foreign language items that cannot be read by library staff; and resolving difficult problems when important parts of the item are missing ar are in disarray. Some cataloguers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient

    Abstract
    Describes the origins of the CATaloguing and Retrieval of Information Over Network Applications (CATRIONA) Study in the BUBL Subject Tree service and nots its aims: to investigate the requirements for developing procedures and applications for cataloguing and retrieval of networked resources (particularly via the Internet); and to explore the feasibility of a collaborative project to develop and integrate them with existing library systems. The project established that a distributed catalogue of networked resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces with information on hard copy resources is already a practical proposition at a basic level.     Abstract
    State of the art review exploring the problem of bibliographic citations to resources that exist only in electronic form where the cited items may no longer be locatable at the URL indicated. Notes that the Internet is currently in a state of near chaos in terms of access and organization, while searching, usually performed with word based search engines, is generally not adequate for the needs of most users. Reviews strategies used by librarians for cataloguing and classifying information resources on the Internet. Techniques used include: automatic classification projects and classified subject trees, like the BUBL Subject Tree; CyberDewey, and the WWW Virtual Library. Considers OPAC like library catalogues such as the UK's CATRIONA Project and OCLC's InterCat.     Abstract
    Library science may well have an essential role to play in efficiently organising the huge amount of Internet information available in the various scientific disciplines. The basic problem is to develop a cataloguing theory sufficiently flexible to cope with the impact of an ever changing store of network data. Such a theory would abondon the utopian idea of a 'catalogue of ctalogues', seeking instead to match each specific user query to the most appropriate catalogue.     Abstract
    Highlights 2 problems with thinking of the Internet as a virtual library. Documents on the Internet, unlike books in a library, are difficult to catalogue, Internet holdings can change by the minute, and 'books' can disappear off the shelf without warning leaving scholars unable to verify cited sources. Sets out strategies to adopt, including: printing out sources or saving to hard disc; opt for signed articles; gauge the reliability of the material; contact the web master if problems arise. A major problem concerns bibliographic description and the actual, physical form of cited Internet references. Recommends 2 major guides for college writing: The Modern Language Association (MLA) Handbook for Writers of Research Papers; and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA).     Rights management and long term integrity of citations are just 2 of the issues which continue to impede the widespread adoption of the WWW as a method for publishing online serials. Discusses the history and purposes of Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) as well as the role identifiers will play in the deployment of online serials. Pays particular attention to development of Uniform Resource names (URNs), one of the goals of which is to use existing identifier systems, such as ISBNs, ISSNs, and SICIs. Describes URN syntax and resolution, then presents some illustrations of how WWW based publication of online serials might use different forms of URIs

    Abstract
    WWW sites, consisting mainly of links to other Internet resources, have begun to proliferate and these sites are valuable to library users and researchers because they bring together in a single Web site links to a comprehensive array of information resources. Because libraries may elect to include bibliographic records for these sites in their online catalogues, cataloguers should be aware of some of the main aspects of cataloguing this new type of resource. Concludes that cataloguers should be aware of the main types and different characteristics of these Web sites, how to describe them in bibliographic records and how to assign appropriate subject headings for them

    The networked information environment has recently seen the emergence of a number of important new identifiers, some of which are relatively mature, and others that are still under development. After a general discussion of the significance of identifiers as a tool of communication within and between communities, briefly discusses some of these new identifiers as follows: URLs, URNs, Persistant URL (PURL), the Serial Item and Contribution Identifier (SICI) code and related developments; and the Digital Object Identifier (DOI)
