- Abstract
- Das Buch macht den Leser mit der Avantgarde der heutigen Forschung bekannt, darunter die Nobelpreisträger. Das Buch gilt als eine Einführung in die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. - John Horgan liefert sehr überzeugende Argumente für die Behauptung, daß die besten und aufregendsten wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen bereits hinter uns liegen. Er stellt fest, daß heutzutage viele Wissenschaftler, besonders die, die er für sein Buch interviewte, "von einem tiefen Unbehagen erfaßt" sind -- zum Teil wegen schwindenden Geldmitteln und erbittertem Wettbewerb, aber auch in zunehmendem Maße aus dem Gefühl heraus, daß "das große Zeitalter der wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen vorbei ist". Anders ausgedrückt -- so argumentiert er -- die großen Probleme, die gelöst werden können, sind es bereits; und die, die noch nicht gelöst wurden, können es auch nicht werden. Unter den gefeierten Denkern, die in diesem ehrgeizigen Buch zitiert werden, befinden sich Namen wie Stephen Jay Gould, Roger Penrose und John Archibald Wheeler. Seine These wird durch eine präzise Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten 20 Jahre eingeleitet und umfaßt Themen wie zum Beispiel die Superstring-Theorie, mathematische Topologie und die Unterscheidung von Chaos und Komplexität. - Interviews mit verschiedenen Personen (S. Weinberg, J. Eccles, N. Chomsky, M. Feigenbaum, I. Prigogine u.a.) zum Thema 'Ende der Wissenschaft'

- Handlungsvorbereitung vor Bewusstsein Manche Entscheidungen, die wir bewusst treffen, werden durch unbewusst ablaufende Vorgänge im Gehirn vorbereitet, sozusagen gebahnt. Dies haben unlängst Studien mit bildgebenden Verfahren am Max-Planck-Institut für Kognitions- und Neurowissenschaften in Leipzig gezeigt. Die Leipziger Kognitionsforscher setzten ihre Versuchspersonen in die Röhre eines Kernspintomographen, um ihre Hirnaktivität mit Hilfe der funktionellen Kernresonanz zu scannen. Die Probanden sollten sich zu einem beliebigen Zeitpunkt entscheiden, entweder die linke oder die rechte Hand zu bewegen. Danach mussten sie angeben, wann genau sie sich ihrer Absicht bewusst wurden, mit der einen oder der anderen Hand auf die Taste eines Keyboards zu drücken. Die Überraschung: Schon sechs bis zehn Sekunden vor dem Gewahrwerden der Intention zeigten sich im Stirnhirn und Scheitellappen charakteristische Veränderungen im neuronalen Aktivierungsmuster. Und noch eins: Besagte Veränderungen des Gehirns erlaubten eine Voraussage, ob die Versuchsperson - zehn Sekunden später - willentlich die rechte oder die linke Hand bewegte. Diese Prognose erfolgte freilich nicht mit 100-prozentiger Sicherheit sondern - ähnlich wie bei einer langfristigen Wetterprognose - nur mit einer Wahrscheinlichkeit von etwa 55 bis 60 Prozent. Damit lag aber die Trefferquote immer noch deutlich über der Zufallswahrscheinlichkeit von 50 Prozent, und dies bedeutet vermutlich, dass schon Sekunden vor einer Entscheidung im Unbewussten eine Tendenz besteht, diese Entscheidung herbeizuführen - zumindest in den Experimenten der Leipziger Kognitionsforscher.
Weiterführende Untersuchungen mit bildgebenden Verfahren verdanken wir dem britischen Hirnforscher Hawkan Lau und seinen Kollegen vom University College in London. Wenn die Versuchsteilnehmer im Kernspintomographen - introspektiv - ihre ganze Aufmerksamkeit konzentriert auf den Moment der Intention richteten, in dem sie den Impuls, den inneren Drang (englisch "urge") verspürten, einen Finger zu krümmen, dann veränderte sich in diesem Augenblick die Hirnaktivität in einer charakteristischen Weise. Sie verstärkte sich ausgerechnet in einem Rindenfeld, von dem man annimmt, es sei an der aktuellen Planung eines Bewegungsablaufs beteiligt. Besagter Hirnbezirk liegt an der (medialen) Innenseite einer Hirnhemisphäre in direkter Nachbarschaft zum motorischen Kortex und heißt in der Fachsprache "präsupplementärmotorischer Kortex" (englisch abgekürzt "Pre-SMA").Die im Wissenschaftsmagazin "Science" publizierten Forschungsergebnisse erregten großes Aufsehen, zumal sich eine Aktivierung des Pre-SMA nicht feststellen ließ, wenn die Probanden kaum auf die Intention einer Fingerbewegung achteten, sondern - statt dessen - auf die Auslösung der Bewegung. Die englischen Neurobiologen hätten durch ihre Forschungsarbeit herausgefunden, dass die neuronale Aktivität im Pre-SMA der cerebralen Repräsentation einer Intention entspräche, hieß es in der Laudatio anlässlich der Verleihung des renommierten William James-Preises an Lau und seine Kollegen. Und: Die preisgekrönte Forschung lege nahe, dass die Fokussierung der Aufmerksamkeit auf die Intention einer Handlung auch deren bewusste (willentliche) Kontrolle ermöglichen könnte. Diese Schlussfolgerungen könnten möglicherweise auch von Bedeutung für die Psychotherapie einer Angststörung, der Zwangsneurose, sein. Es stellt sich nämlich die Frage, ob Achtsamkeit und Aufmerksamkeit auf die Intention, bzw. den inneren Drang zu handeln, nicht manchen Menschen mit Zwangsstörungen helfen könnten, ihre Zwänge - einen Waschzwang beispielsweise - etwas besser unter Kontrolle zu bringen.
Dies wird mit einer auf der Achtsamkeitsmeditation basierenden kognitiven Verhaltenstherapie angestrebt. Ein Patient mit Waschzwang könne dank dieser Therapie lernen, sich innerlich von seinen Zwängen zu distanzieren, indem er gelassen auf die sich immer wieder aufdrängenden Impulse achte ohne darauf zu reagieren - als ob sie ihn nichts angingen, sagt der kalifornische Psychiater Jeffrey Schwartz, ein praktizierender Buddhist. Jedenfalls: Trotz oder vielleicht auch gerade wegen der aktuellen Erkenntnisse neurowissenschaftlicher Forschung ist kaum anzunehmen, dass das für die ethischen Belange der Menschheit so wichtige Konzept des "freien Willens" bald aufgegeben wird. Wir behalten die Kontrolle über unser Handeln - zumindest, wenn unser Verhalten eher rational als emotional bestimmt ist."

- Die DFG hat mit ihren empfehlungen 'Neue Informations-Infrastrukturen in forschung und Lehre' eine engere Kooperation bei der Förderung digitaler Bibliotheksentwicklungen angeregt und auf die Notwendigkeit der Reorganisation des Informationsmanagements der Hochschulen im digitalen Zeitalter hingewiesen.
