    Abstract
    Methoden und Techniken der Informationsvisualisierung werden seit ungefähr zwanzig Jahren im Bereich der Informationssuche eingesetzt. In dieser Literaturstudie werden ausgewählte Visualisierungsanwendungen der letzten Jahre vorgestellt. Sie betreffen zum einen den Retrievalprozess, das Boolesche Retrieval, die facettierte Suche, Dokumentbeziehungen, die Zufallssuche und Ergebnisanzeige, zum anderen spezielle Anwendungen wie die kartenbasierte und adaptive Visualisierung, Zitationsnetzwerke und Wissensordnungen. Die Einsatzszenarien für Applikationen der Informationsvisualisierung sind vielfältig. Sie reichen von mobilen kleinformatigen Anwendungen bis zu großformatigen Darstellungen auf hochauflösenden Bildschirmen, von integrativen Arbeitsplätzen für den einzelnen Nutzer bis zur Nutzung interaktiver Oberflächen für das kollaborative Retrieval. Das Konzept der Blended Library wird vorgestellt. Die Übertragbarkeit von Visualisierungsanwendungen auf Bibliothekskataloge wird im Hinblick auf die Nutzung des Kataloginputs und des Angebots an Sucheinstiegen geprüft. Perspektivische Überlegungen zu zukünftigen Entwicklungsschritten von Bibliothekskatalogen sowie zum Einfluss von Visualisierungsanwendungen auf die Informationspraxis werden angestellt.

    Abstract
    Zielsetzung - Information Professionals sind in Unternehmen für den professionellen und strategischen Umgang mit Informationen verantwortlich. Da es keine allgemeingültige Definition für diese Berufsgruppe gibt, wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit eine Begriffsbestimmung unternommen. Methode - Mit Hilfe dreier Methoden - einer Auswertung von relevanter Fachliteratur, der Untersuchung von einschlägigen Stellenausschreibungen und dem Führen von Experteninterviews - wird ein Kompetenzprofil für Information Professionals erstellt. Ergebnisse - Die 16 wichtigsten Kompetenzen in den Bereichen Fach-, Methoden-, Sozial- und persönliche Kompetenzen sind IT-Kenntnisse, Sprachkenntnisse, Quellenkenntnisse, Recherchekenntnisse, Projektmanagement, Darstellungskompetenz, Problemlösungskompetenz, selbständiges Arbeiten, Kommunikationsfähigkeit, Teamfähigkeit, Servicementalität, Interkulturelle Kompetenz, Analytische Fähigkeiten, Eigenmarketing, Veränderungsbereitschaft und Stressresistenz. Schlussfolgerung - Die Kompetenzen geben eine Orientierung über vorhandene Fähigkeiten dieser Berufsgruppe für Personalfachleute, Vorgesetzte und Information Professionals selbst. Ein Kompetenzrad kann als Visualisierung dienen.

    Abstract
    Die rasante wissenschaftlich-technische Entwicklung birgt neben Chancen auch Risiken. Ein zunehmender Anteil dieser Risiken fällt unter die Kategorie sog. systemischer Risiken. Vermutete Risiken von Novel Food, Elektrosmog, Nanotechnologie und andere Themen werden kontrovers diskutiert. Dabei kann die Wissenschaft ihre Beratungsfunktion in Form eines Leistungsversprechens gegenüber Politik und Öffentlichkeit immer weniger erfolgreich einlösen - zu groß ist die Heterogenität der (Nicht-)Wissensbestände. Das hat zur Folge, dass sowohl für Individuen als auch für Politik gesichertes Entscheidungswissen immer seltener verfügbar sein wird. Trotzdem müssen auf allen Ebenen (sowohl individuell als auch global) weiterhin Entscheidungen getroffen werden; Entscheidungen unter den Bedingungen von Ungewissheit. Vor diesem Hintergrund steht die Risikokommunikation vor der Frage, wie heterogenes Wissen und Nichtwissen über systemische Risiken vermittelt werden kann. Unsere These ist, dass sich Risikokommunikation aus der Einbahnstraßenkommunikation nach dem Muster Experten-belehren-Laien verabschieden muss. Nur eine integrative Risikokommunikation, die Wissensbestände nicht a priori sortiert, kann den aktuellen Risikokontroversen gerecht werden. Wir möchten mit dem Ansatz der "internetbasierten Visualisierung von Risikokontroversen" einen Beitrag zu einer adäquateren Risikoerschließung und Risikokommunikation leisten.
