Die neuen Entwicklungen im Bereich der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik und die vielfältigen Konsequenzen in Hinblick auf die Arbeit von Bibliotheken bzw.Veränderungen im Buch- und Verlagswesen sollen sich im Lexikon wieder finden. Das Konzept des Titels war und ist überaus ehrgeizig: Die großen Gebiete Buch, Bibliothek und Medien in einem alphabetisch angelegten Lexikon abzudecken, um, wie im Vorwort der 1. Auflage formuliert wurde, »einen Überblick über den das Buch betreffenden Wissensstoff zu geben und das Wichtigste über Aufgaben und Arbeitsweise der Bibliotheken zu vermitteln«. Zielgruppen sind sowohl die »im Bibliotheks- oder Dokumentationsbereich tätigen Praktiker« wie auch die Studierenden, denen mit diesem Lexikon ein, wie Dietmar Strauch anmerkt »vielseitig verwendbares Nachschlagewerk« an die Hand gegeben wird, das zudem in vielen Bereichen »auch als Lehrbuch« verwendet werden könne. Um es vorweg zu nehmen: diesem Anspruch wird das Lexikon leider nur in Teilen gerecht; es finden sich zu viele Unstimmigkeiten, sachlich falsche oder veraltete Einträge, schwer erklärbare inhaltliche Lücken, inhaltlich kaum nachvollziehbare Gewichtungen, und eine Verweisstruktur, die teils inkonsistent ist, die den Wert des Lexikons entscheidend mindern. Dass es, natürlich, einen Wert hat und sehr viele der Stichwörter den Fragenden knapp und korrekt informieren, das soll an dieser Stelle auch betont und belegt werden.
