- The National Library of France (BNBF) general catalogue in now available on CD-ROM, comprising nearly 4 million entries. Created by retrospective converiosn rather than recataloguing, this version retains inconsistencies and duplications from its sources, but some improvements and corrections have been effected, eg supplementary access points. The CD-ROM offers an invaluable reservoir of bibliographic records for other libraries undertaking retrospective cataloguing, and can be searched either by list or keyword, with results on paper or electronic format

- Abstract
- Account of the preliminary stages in the Bibliothèque National project to produce data from the national bibliography, the Bibliographie de France, on CD-ROM. The pilot disc was produced in collaboration with the British Library, using software developed by Online Computers, and tested out in 60 establishments in 1988. Results of this experiment showed up problems in installation, and user dissatisfaction with the indexing system, formats, headings, and instruction manual. Overall, however, user feedback indicated a good market for CD-ROM, as a complement to other sources of bibliographical data. The 1st full edition, with 380.000 records covering 1975-89, was produced in May 89, and a 2nd edition is scheduled for Oct 89. Discussions are currently in hand to develop European standards for CD-ROM, to be used by all national libraries.

- Abstract
- Users of international libraries, such as the UN library in Geneva, are themselves highly skilled in using electronic information sources and expect to have access to the most up to date equipment. The librarian/user relationship is thus cooperative, with the user often more expert in using new tools than the librarian. There is no formal network of international libraries, which stand outside overall information policies, though libraries such as those of the UN coordinate standards and activities. The role of the librarian in this context, as exemplified by the Genova library, embraces 3 functions: producer (creation of databases and bibliographies eg those of the Department of Human Rights); trainer (continuing education for both colleagues and users); and mediator (making information and documentation available to the public eg CD-ROM and video publications of archive material celebrating the UN's 50th anniversary). With increasing use of the Internet and the personalisation of information, the library is becoming more like a cafe, offering an information space for individualistic users

- Abstract
- Report of a study at the University of Montreal (Quebec) analysing research on the behaviour of children using information technology (online databases, CD-ROM, computerised catalogues). From a range of publications covering 6-12 year olds in the US, Canada, Europe and Oceania common features were identified: (1) children's cognitive development does not match the structured approach required for this type of information research, (2) the main abrriers were physical (e.g. using keyboard), intellectual (no capacity for abstract reasoning) and social (little access to computers); (3) in terms of natural skills, boys has greater abilities than girls. Results indicate the need to make technology more appropriate for children, and train libarrians to recognise the real capacities and limitations of children so they can teach them the basic skills

- In Apr 92 the French Library Association (ABF) convened a working group to assess current provisions of bibliographic information. This article reports on the outcomes up to Dec 92, referring to general libraries. The 2 main sources for current French materials are BN-OPALE, the national bibliography; and ELECTRE, its commercial rival. Both are available on CD-ROM; and although ELECTRE is more up to date, it is prohibitively expensive. The other contender is the newly introduced (May 92) National Bibliographic Service, which has serious drawbacks in that it is not available on CD-ROM and disregards UNIMARC format

- Abstract
- Account of a limited experimental study at the Bibliothèque Publique d'Informations (BPI), the Paris multimedia public library, to establish a methodology for investigating user interactions with new technology. A wide range of materials are available at the BPI, including CD-ROMs and the Internet. Preliminary observations indicate that users do not follow the pattern dictated by the machine, but take approaches based on their own experience and skills. Setbacks are generally interpreted as defects in the software, not personla failure to master the system. Large scale qualitative abservation, using research methods from the social sciences, would establish a knowledge base for developing user skills to exploit multimedia resources more fully

- Abstract
- The introduction of multimedia into the library raises new questions concerning who the users are and how best to match services to their needs. An inquiry into the users of CD-ROMs in the Nancy mediatheque offers some answers to the questions. The choice of CD-ROMs and the way in which this service is used difers according to whether the public is active or not, and according to the kind of training followed. Far from being mutually antagonistic, reading of books and consultation of CD-ROMs seem to reinfornce each other
