- Abstract
- Der Begriff des Wissens geht davon aus, dass Tatbestände als 'wahr' und 'gerechtfertigt' angesehen werden. Die Gründe für solche Überzeugungen liegen in der Gewissheit der eigenen Wahrnehmung sowie in der Kommunikation dieser Wahrnehmungen. Beide Bedingungen befinden sich gegenwärtig im Umbruch: Unsere sinnliche Wahrnehmung wird durch Medien und Sensorsysteme gestützt, und die Verständigung über solcherart erzeugte Wahrnehmungen wird in wachsendem Maße telematisch kommuniziert. Die tendenziell globale Ausweitung der kollaborativen Erzeugung des Wissens durch computergestützte Netzwerke irritiert nicht nur die Vertrauensverhältnisse, die den Wissensprozessen zugrunde liegen, sondern auch die Struktur und Funktionen des Wissens selbst.

- Abstract
- An exploratory study was conducted of elementary school children searching a full-text electronic encyclopedia on CD-ROM. 28 third and forth graders and 24 sixth graders conducted 2 assigned searches, one open-ended, the other one closed, after 2 demonstration sessions. Keystrokes captured by the computer and observer notes were used to examine user information-seeking strategies from a mental model perspective. Older searchers were more successful in finding required information, and took less time than younger searchers. No differences in total number of moves were found. Analysis of search patterns showed that novices used a heuristic, highly interactive search strategy. Searchers used sentence and phrase queries, indicating unique mental models for this search system. Most searchers accepted system defaults and used the AND connective in formulating queries. Transition matrix analysis showed that younger searchers generally favoured query refining moves and older searchers fovoured examining title and text moves. Suggestions for system designers were made and future research questions were identified

- Abstract
- Describes the methodology and reports the results of a study to measure text comprehension by school students when using a variety of media. Four different texts in the printed multi volume Compton's Encyclopedia and its multimedia CD-ROM database equivalent were read by grade 6 (11-12 year old) students who were then asked several multiple choice questions on them. Three groups, print, text on screen and multimedia (text, illustration and video), were asked only to read the texts presented to them. Two additional groups, print and multimedia CD-ROM, had to retrieve the texts before reading them. No significant main effect was found for multimedia over print or text on screen. However, a significant interaction was found between the use of multimedia and text complexity. Boys were found to cope markedly better with multimedia CD-ROM, a finding which was not expected and ran counter to the results of previous studies

- Abstract
- Tests were carried out on 120 grade 6 students to compare Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia on CD-ROM and its printe equivalent in terms of students' ability to recall information and to draw inferences from it. Between-subject varaibles were 3 presentation conditions (printed text with illustrations, text-on-screen, and multimedia-text, still images, and animation) and a retrieval condition (topic retrieved before viewing / topic presented without retrieval). Within-subject variables were text complexity (complex or simple), text type (descriptive or procedural), and measure (propositions recalled versus propositions inferred). Presentation conditions produced no significant main effect although text-on-screen resulted in somewhat higher recall and multimedia resulted in somewhat higher inference scores. Multimedia had the greatest effect in the case of simple topics, and especially the simple procedural topic

- Abstract
- Der Verfasser versucht nach einem Literaturüberblick eigene Daten in den Kontext zu stellen. Man darf sicher behaupten, dass Wissen die Basis des heutigen menschlichen Lebens ist. Die Spur des Wissens zu verfolgen scheint nicht ganz einfach, weil es bereits (Vor-)Wissen bedarf, um Wissen zu erlangen. Dazu muss man Fragen stellen - oder anders gesagt: es muss schon viel Information angehäuft, strukturiert worden sein. Daher berührt die erste These die Schwierigkeiten von Menschen, die weit vor den "Forschungsfronten" arbeiten, wer "Wissen schafft, muss besondere Fähigkeiten zum Fragen stellen entwickeln, aber insbesondere auch zum Wahrnehmen. Es gibt Schwellenwerte der Wahrnehmung' neuer wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse. Die zweite These: Eine wichtige Rolle zur Überwindung dieser Schwellenwerte spielt jene Kommunikationsform, die am ältesten ist, das Gespräch. Denn die heute zu durchschreitenden Informationswüsten sind am besten mit dem persönlichen Rat zu überwinden. Die vorliegenden Daten aus Befragungen mit rund hundert Wissenschaftlern stützen dies. Nach wie vor - trotz moderner Medien wie Internet, CD-ROM und allen möglichen Datenbanken - wird das Gespräch gesucht. Der Autor sieht das Gespräch (informeller Informationskanal) zum einen - verhaltensbiologisch - als eine Urform menschlicher Kommunikation, d. h. uns ist "angeborenermaßen" eine Präferenz mitgegeben. Zum anderen ist die persönliche Kommunikation ein Wichtungsmaßstab für das" Wahr-nehmen'' im Uberangebot von Printinformationen (formeller Informationskanal), denn nach wie vor ist die Zeitschrift wichtigste Quelle für den Wissenschaftler
