- Abstract
- Für eine korrekte und zielführende Formalerschließung lassen sich drei Ebenen von Leitlinien definieren: Zielsetzungen, Prinzipien und Regeln der Katalogisierung. Der vorliegende Artikel befasst sich hauptsächlich mit den (möglichen) Zielsetzungen und Prinzipien der Katalogisierung. In der Einleitung der im Jahr 2009 herausgegebenen "Erklärung zu den Internationalen Katalogisierungsprinzipien" (ICP) ist vermerkt, dass die dort vorgelegte Prinzipiensammlung aufbaut auf "den großen Katalogtraditionen der Welt". Diese Traditionen werden dann mit drei Referenzen aus der frühen Fachliteratur belegt: Den Schriften von Charles A. Cutter (1904), Shiyali R. Ranganathan (1955) und Seymour Lubetzky (1969). In diesem Artikel werden nach einem kurzen chronologischen Überblick die drei genannten Publikationen und insbesondere die darin enthaltenen Feststellungen zu Sinn und Zweck von international einheitlichen Prinzipien für die bibliothekarische Formalerschließung in ihren geschichtlichen Kontext eingeordnet und ihr jeweiliger Einfluss auf die diversen existierenden Formulierungen von Zielen und Prinzipien näher beleuchtet. Außerdem werden einige bemerkenswert moderne Gedankengänge in den betreffenden Schriften aufgezeigt. Ein abschließendes Fazit fasst die wichtigsten Zielsetzungen und Prinzipien der Katalogisierung noch einmal mit Bezug auf die verwendete Literatur zur Theorie der Informationsorganisation zusammen.

- Abstract
- Leistungsfähige Arbeitsplatzrechner mit ihrer Fähigkeit, Bild, Text und Ton zu kombinieren, und die weltweite Vernetzung der Arbeitsstationen über das "WorldWideWeb", die den unmittelbaren Austausch multimedialer Dokumente erlauben, verändern nicht nur Formen und Strukturen der alltäglichen Informationsbeschaffung und Informationsweitergabe, sondern prägen auch nachhaltig die Organisation und Repräsentation sowie die Kommunikation und Präsentation von Fachwissen. Die Deutsche Sektion der "International Society of Knowledge-Organization" (ISKO) empfindet angesichts dieser Entwicklungen eine besondere Herausforderung, sich wissenschaftlich und pragmatisch mit den dadurch verursachten Implikationen auseinander zu setzen. Deshalb beschäftigte sich die im Herbst 1997 an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin stattfindende Tagung Wissensorganisation '97 schwerpunktmäßig mit Fraugen und orientierenden Aussagen zum Begriff Bild, zur Bildrepräsentation und -manipulation, zu Visualisierungsprozessen, multimedialen Präsentationen und Anwendungen sowie den Besonderheiten und Möglichkeiten des Internets und seiner Strukturen. Gegenstand der Tagung waren aber auch allgemeine Grundlagen der Wissensorganisation, beispielsweise Probleme der Begriffsabgrenzung, der Klassifikation und des Information-Retrieval, die ebenfalls von der ISKO thematisch abgedeckt werden. Der vorliegende Band 5 der Reihe "Fortschritte in der Wissensorganisation" beinhaltet eine repräsentative Auswahl der Tagungsbeiträge. Sie sind bewußt auf die Bedürfnisse einer interdisziplinär orientierten Leserschaft ausgerichtet und vermitteln einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Möglichkeiten, Techniken und Hilfsmittel moderner multimedialer und vernetzter Dokumente und Wissensstrukturen.

- Abstract
- Vor rund 25 Jahren entwarf Umberto Eco anlässlich des Jubiläums einer italienischen Stadtbibliothek die negative Utopie einer benützerfeindlichen Bibliothek, an deren hervorstechendste Eigenschaften im vorliegenden Beitrag erinnert wird. Vieles damals teils als Desiderat, teils fast als Utopie Empfundene ist heute erreicht, ja Selbstverständlichkeit geworden. Überträgt man Ecos Betrachtungsweise auf einige Aspekte der Benützerfreundlichkeit heutiger digitaler Bibliotheken und Informationsressourcen, wie z. B. Navigierbarkeit und Zugänglichkeit, lassen sich auch hier noch, dem Erreichten zum Trotz, Desiderate und Raumfür Utopien aufzeigen.

- Abstract
- Auf der Grundlage einer eigens entworfenen Dokumenttypdefinition für Dissertationen (DiML) wurden an der Humboldt-Universität Technologien und Konzepte entwickelt, um SGML/XML als Archivformat für elektronische Dissertationen innerhalb der Universitätsbibliothek zu integrieren. Ein Austausch mit Universitäten, die gleichartige Konzepte entwickeln, zeigt, daß die Probleme bei der Durchsetzung vor allem im Aufwand der Strukturierung bzw. Nachbearbeitung durch die Autoren bzw. die Bibliothek zu sehen sind. Daher wird versucht, durch die an die Bedürfnisse der Autoren angepaßte Benutzerschnittstellen die Arbeit für diese zu vereinfachen, um das in den Dissertationen enthaltene Wissen durch die Universitätsbibliotheken für ihre Leser nutzbar zu machen

- Abstract
- Elektronische Medien haben die Sammlung, Archivierung und Bereitstellung von Information radikal verändert. Die Wissensorganisation des Einzelnen wird mehr und mehr von der Externalisierung von Gedächtnisleistungen geprägt. Der Erwerb von Information und Wissen wird häufig in digitaler Form über die Datenbanken und Netzwerke des Internets organisiert, die als Ressource und als Kommunikationsmedium für die Lösung von Wissensproblemen erheblich an Bedeutung gewinnen. Durch die Nutzung elektronischer Medien für den Informations- und Wissenserwerb und die Wissensbewahrung müssen sich auch die Inhalte und Methoden der universitären Ausbildung verändern. Die Fähigkeit zur Aneignung von Wissen und die Fähigkeit zur eigenständigen Organisation von (individuellen und organisatorischen) Wissensbeständen durch die Nutzung elektronischer Wissensspeicher werden zu einer Schlüsselqualifikation. Informationskompetenz und individuelles Wissensmanagement, also die Fähigkeit zur Organisation der eigenen Wissensbestände und zur Lösung von neu auftauchenden Wissensproblemen, die nicht mehr durch Rückgriff auf eigene Erfahrung gelöst werden können, durch die Nutzung digitaler Daten in elektronischen Netzen werden zunehmend zu Erfordernissen moderner Wissensarbeit.
