    Abstract
    Purpose - The paper aims to argue that digital library retrieval should be based on semantic representations and propose a semantic infrastructure for digital libraries. Design/methodology/approach - The approach taken is formal model based on subject representation for digital libraries. Findings - Search engines and search techniques have fallen short of user expectations as they do not give context based retrieval. Deploying semantic web technologies would lead to efficient and more precise representation of digital library content and hence better retrieval. Though digital libraries often have metadata of information resources which can be accessed through OAI-PMH, much remains to be accomplished in making digital libraries semantic web compliant. This paper presents a semantic infrastructure for digital libraries, that will go a long way in providing them and web based information services with products highly customised to users needs. Research limitations/implications - Here only a model for semantic infrastructure is proposed. This model is proposed after studying current user-centric, top-down models adopted in digital library service architectures. Originality/value - This paper gives a generic model for building semantic infrastructure for digital libraries. Faceted ontologies for digital libraries is just one approach. But the same may be adopted by groups working with different approaches in building ontologies to realise efficient retrieval in digital libraries.

    Abstract
    While the Web has grown significantly in recent years, some portions of the Web remain largely underdeveloped, as shown in a lack of high-quality content and functionality. An example is the Arabic Web, in which a lack of well-structured Web directories limits users' ability to browse for Arabic resources. In this research, we proposed an approach to building Web directories for the underdeveloped Web and developed a proof-of-concept prototype called the Arabic Medical Web Directory (AMedDir) that supports browsing of over 5,000 Arabic medical Web sites and pages organized in a hierarchical structure. We conducted an experiment involving Arab participants and found that the AMedDir significantly outperformed two benchmark Arabic Web directories in terms of browsing effectiveness, efficiency, information quality, and user satisfaction. Participants expressed strong preference for the AMedDir and provided many positive comments. This research thus contributes to developing a useful Web directory for organizing the information in the Arabic medical domain and to a better understanding of how to support browsing on the underdeveloped Web.

    Wer schnell wissenschaftliche Informationen zu Hause. auf seinem PC benötigt, kann, künftig bei www.vascoda.de fündig werden: Unter dieser Internet-Adresse. haben 37 deutsche Bibliotheken, Forschungsinstitute und Informationseinrichtungen ein fächerübergreifendes Internetportal eingerichtet. Angeschlossen sind auch das Deutsche Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung in Frankfurt und das Institut für Soziologie der TU Darmstadt.

    "Wissenschaftler brauchen fundierte Informationen aus Quellen, auf die man sich verlassen kann. Die Suche nach solchen Quellen, wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen, Dissertationen, Büchern, Datenbanken und Linklisten gestaltete sich bislang schwierig: Bibliotheken oder Verlage von Fachzeitschriften mussten einzeln angesteuert werden, einen zentralen, einheitlichen und einfachen Zugang gab es bislang, nicht. Das soll sich jetzt ändern: Das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und von der Deutschen; Forschungsgemeinsehaft (DFG) geförderte Internetportal "vascoda", das nach dem Willen seiner Initiatoren auch Grundbaustein für die "Digitale Bibliothek Deutschland" sein soll, will Forschern Zugang zu wissenschaftlicher Information unterschiedlichster Fachrichtungen und unterschiedlichster Formate bieten. Das ist bundesweit in dieser Form ebenso einzigartig wie die Tatsache, dass die an vascoda angeschlossenen Datenbanken ausschließlich ;,geprüfte" Informationen liefern sollen: "Fachbibliothekare und Fachwissenschaftler der Anbieter, die sich unter dem vascoda-Dach zusammengeschlossen haben, prüfen, welche Texte vdrfügbar gemacht werden", sagt Christine Burblies von der vascoda-Geschäftsstelle in Hannover. "So können wir gewährleisten, dass die Informationen wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügen." Das macht dann auch den wesentlichen Unterschied zu anderen Suchmaschinen aus: Die Suchmaske des Wissenschaftsportals ist zwar ähnlich einfach zu handhaben wie die Internet-Suchmaschine Google - vascoda verirrt sich aber nicht im World Wide Web. Und während andere Internet-Suchmaschinen nicht den Zugriff auf das so genannte "invisible web" bieten, also beispielsweise auf Bibliothekskataloge, ermöglicht vascoda auch den Zugriff auf dieses unsichtbare Netz. Das Wissenschaftsportal ist unentgeltlich nutzbar, und auch ein Großteil der Informationen ist kostenlos zu beziehen. Es sind aber auch kostenpflichtige Informationen verfügbar - zum Beispiel aus Verlagsangeboten und kommerziellen Datenbanken. Wer Informationen etwa zu soziologischen Fragen sucht, landet sicher auch auf den Internetseiten des Instituts für Soziologie in Darmstadt (www.ifs.tu-darmstadt.de/forsch.htm), das ebenso zu den vascoda-Anbietern gehört wie das Deutsche Institut für Internationale Pädagogik (DIPF) in Frankfurt (www.dipfde/index_1024.htm). In vascoda eingebunden sind zur Zeit 23 virtuelle Fachbibliotheken (ViFas), die vier großen Informationsverbünde EconDoc (Wirtschaft), GetInfo (Naturwissenschaften und Technik), infoconnex (Pädagogik, Sozialwissenschaften, Psychologie) und Medizin sowie die Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek (EZB), ein kooperativer Service von 209 Bibliotheken zur Bereitstellung von elektronischen Zeitschriften, -die im Internet publiziert werden. "Wir planen überdies die Erweiterung um das Fach Germanistik, und wenn es soweit ist, wird die Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt diesen Service bereitstellen", sagt Burblies."

    Abstract
    The Europeana, the European digital library web-service, is being developed in the framework of the EU-funded network EDLnet. The demo version of this webservice was shown at an international conference at the German National Library in Frankfurt on 1 February 2008, the prototype will be launched in November 2008. In November 2007 the EDL Foundation was established to provide cross-domain multilingual access to Europe's cultural heritage. It will facilitate formal agreement across museums, archives, audio-visual archives and libraries on how to cooperate in the delivery and sustainability of a joint portal and will provide a legal framework for use by the EU for funding purposes and as a springboard for future governance. The European Commission is supporting the process towards the Europeana with a set of projects centering on The European Library. This webservice created by the European national libraries is seen as one of the major building blocks of the Europeana.

    "In der zweiten Projektphase, die in diesem Jahr begonnen hat, wird vascoda bis zum Jahr 2007 mit dem Einsatz von moderner Suchmaschinentechnologie zu einer nutzerorientierten und transparenten Dienstleistung ausgebaut werden. vascoda ist ein Gemeinschaftsunternehmen zahlreicher leistungsstarker wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen und wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) und dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gefördert. vascoda ist das deutsche Internetportal für wissenschaftliche Information in allen Fächern von Anglistik über Pädagogik zu Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Es bietet die Möglichkeit einer interdisziplinären Suche und der Navigation zu zahlreichen Fachportalen. vascoda ist entstanden durch die Kooperation der zwei wesentlichen wissenschaftlichen Fördereinrichtungen in Deutschland, dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Unter dem Dach von vascoda sind die durch das BMBF finanzierten Informationsverbünde (EconDoc, Getlnfo, infoconnex, MedPilot) und die von der DFG geförderten Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken sowie die von beiden Förderern unterstützte Elektronische Zeitschriften Bibliothek (EZB), die ZDB und die AG Verbundsysteme eine strategische Allianz eingegangen. Inzwischen ist es gelungen, vascoda in eine tragfähige Organisationsform zu überführen. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter aus 26 deutschen Bibliotheken und Fachinformationseinrichtungen haben im September in Hannover den Verein vascoda gegründet, seit November 2005 ist vascoda ein eingetragener Verein (e.V.). Insgesamt arbeiten mehr als 40 deutsche Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen an der Weiterentwicklung von vascoda mit. Hierbei stellt gerade die Vielfalt der beteiligten Einrichtungen und deren oftmals unterschiedliche Interessenslagen eine besondere Herausforderung dar. Beteiligt sind neben Bibliotheken und anderen Einrichtungen auch so genannte Fachinformationszentren, deren Hauptaufgabe es ist, kommerzielle Datenbanken zu erstellen und zu vertreiben.
    Eine der wesentlichen Aufgaben des Vereins wird es sein, ein tragfähiges Geschäftsmodell für vascoda zu entwickeln. Die Zusammenarbeit der unterschiedlichen Partner wird inhaltlich über so genannte Kompetenzzentren organisiert. Zuständig für den Betrieb und die Weiterentwicklung des vascoda Portals ist seit April 2006 das hbz in Köln. Die Verantwortung für Evaluation und Qualitätsmanagement teilen sich die ULB Münster und die ZB MED in Köln. Die Geschäftsstelle vascoda, zuständig für Koordinierung, Vereinsmanagement und zentrales Marketing ist an der TIB in Hannover angesiedelt. Diese Kompetenzzentren werden bis Ende 2007 vom BMBF gefördert. Unter der Federführung der SUB Göttingen werden gemeinsam mit der SUB Hamburg und Der Deutschen Bibliothek in Frankfurt am Main die Themenbereiche "Metadaten, Standards und Heterogenitätsbehandlung" bearbeitet. Dieser Bereich wird durch die DFG gefördert. Ebenso ein Kompetenzzentrum zur Homogenisierung der Fachangebote. Hier soll durch einen intensivierten Wissenstransfer zwischen den beteiligten Einrichtungen und durch die Entwicklung neuer einheitlicher Funktionalitäten der Auftritt der Fachportale übersichtlicher gestaltet werden. Federführend ist hier die ZBW in Kiel, die gemeinsam mit dem IZ Sozialwissenschaften in Bonn dieses Aufgabenfeld bearbeitet. Das Ziel von vascoda ist es, mit dem gemeinsamen Portal eine fachübergreifende Recherche in verteilten einschlägigen Datenbeständen mit dem Zugriff auf die gewünschten Dokumente zu verknüpfen und damit den Nutzerinnen und Nutzern Orientierung im zum Teil unüberschaubaren "Anbieterdschungel" zu bieten. vascoda bietet über die gemeinsame Suche Zugriff auf Volltexte, Internetressourcen, bibliographische und andere Fachdatenbanken sowie auf fachspezifische Suchmaschinen. Die einzelnen Fachportale wiederum bieten den Zugriff auf Internet Ressourcen, Bibliotheks-OPACs, Online Contents Datenbanken, Elektronische Zeitschriften, Dokumentlieferdienste, Online-Tutorien und vieles mehr. Die primäre Zielgruppe von vascoda sind Nutzerinnen und Nutzer aus Forschung und Lehre in Hochschulen, Bibliotheken, aber auch außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen sowie in der Wirtschaft.
    Funktionsweise Momentan basiert die vascoda-Suche auf einer Metasuche in verschiedenen Datenbanken (27 einzelne Datenbanken im Herbst 2005). Über eine Web-ServiceArchitektur werden diese Datenbanken abgefragt und liefern die Antworten. Die Verknüpfung zum Volltext wird dort - wo sie bereits realisiert ist - durch die Anbieter, und parallel durch die Elektronische Zeitschriften Bibliothek (EZB) gewährleistet. Diese Struktur soll zukünftig durch eine Verfügbarkeitsrecherche ersetzt werden, die dann eine Übersicht über die unterschiedlichen Zugriffsmöglichkeiten auf den Volltext bietet. Das Konzept der Verfügbarkeitsrecherche und der Einbindung vorhandener lokaler Linkresolver sieht in der vascoda-Ergebnisanzeige für jeden Treffer einen Verfügbarkeitsbutton vor. Über diesen Button wird dann eine Standortauswahl eingeblendet, über die der Nutzer seine Institution auswählen kann. Nach der jeweiligen Zuordnung wird der Nutzer/die Nutzerin direkt zum OpenURL-Resolver seiner Einrichtung weitergeleitet. Nutzerinnen, die keine Auswahl treffen können, bekommen via vascoda-Portal eine standortunabhängige Verfügbarkeitsrecherche auf Basis der nationalen Nachweissysteme (z. B. EZB, ZDB, Verbundkataloge, ...) angeboten. Zukünftig wird vascoda umfassend durch mehr Content erweitert werden. So sollen eine Vielzahl der Angebote der einzelnen Fachportale sowie die Angebote der Bibliotheksverbünde integriert werden. Auf diese Weise wird eine gemeinsame Suche über alle relevanten Bestände möglich. Ferner wird in Zukunft intelligente Suchmaschinentechnologie bei vascoda zum Einsatz kommen, die gegenüber der bisher eingesetzten klassischen Metasuche eine Reihe von Vorteilen aufweist: Es werden Antwortzeiten im Millisekundenbereich erreicht, die Recherche wird durch den Einsatz von linguistischen Verfahren auf der Ebene der Indexierung optimiert, es erfolgt eine automatische Rechtschreibkorrektur bzw. die Einblendung von Rechtschreibvorschlägen, die Ergebnisliste kann durch ein Ranking der Treffer nach einstellbaren Kriterien (nach Relevanz, Erscheinungsjahr, Dokumenttyp, Systematik, Sprache etc.) aufbereitet werden. Das hbz Köln wird in der Erprobungsphase die Software FAST Data Search zum Einsatz bringen. Diese Software ist bislang u.a. schon bei www.scirus.com und bei der hbz-Suchmaschine (http://suchen.hbz-nrw.de) im Einsatz."

    Abstract
    There are many advantages for Digital Libraries in indexing with classifications or thesauri, but some current disincentive in the lack of flexible retrieval tools that deal with compound descriptors. This paper discusses a matching function for compound descriptors, or multi-concept subject headings, that does not rely an exact matching but incorporates term expansion via thesaurus semantic relationships to produce ranked results that take account of missing and partially matching terms. The matching function is based an a measure of semantic closeness between terms, which has the potential to help with recall problems. The work reported is part of the ongoing FACET project in collaboration with the National Museum of Science and Industry and its collections database. The architecture of the prototype system and its Interface are outlined. The matching problem for compound descriptors is reviewed and the FACET implementation described. Results are discussed from scenarios using the faceted Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus. We argue that automatic traversal of thesaurus relationships can augment the user's browsing possibilities. The techniques can be applied both to unstructured multi-concept subject headings and potentially to more syntactically structured strings. The notion of a focus term is used by the matching function to model AAT modified descriptors (noun phrases). The relevance of the approach to precoordinated indexing and matching faceted strings is discussed.

    Abstract
    Libraries have always been an inspiration for the standards and technologies developed by semantic web activities. However, except for the Dublin Core specification, semantic web and social networking technologies have not been widely adopted and further developed by major digital library initiatives and projects. Yet semantic technologies offer a new level of flexibility, interoperability, and relationships for digital repositories. Kruk and McDaniel present semantic web-related aspects of current digital library activities, and introduce their functionality; they show examples ranging from general architectural descriptions to detailed usages of specific ontologies, and thus stimulate the awareness of researchers, engineers, and potential users of those technologies. Their presentation is completed by chapters on existing prototype systems such as JeromeDL, BRICKS, and Greenstone, as well as a look into the possible future of semantic digital libraries. This book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in areas like digital libraries, the semantic web, social networks, and information retrieval. This audience will benefit from detailed descriptions of both today's possibilities and also the shortcomings of applying semantic web technologies to large digital repositories of often unstructured data.

    Abstract

This demonstration of a research prototype illustrates a matching function for compound descriptors, or multi-concept subject headings, that does not rely on exact matching but incorporates term expansion via thesaurus semantic relationships to produce ranked results that take account of missing and partially matching terms. The matching function is based on a measure of semantic closeness between terms.The work is part of the EPSRC funded FACET project in collaboration with the UK National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI) which includes the National Railway Museum. An export of NMSI's Collections Database is used as the dataset for the research. The J. Paul Getty Trust's Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) is the main thesaurus in the project. The AAT is a widely used thesaurus (over 120,000 terms). Descriptors are organised in 7 facets representing separate conceptual classes of terms.The FACET application is a multi tiered architecture accessing a SQL Server database, with an OLE DB connection. The thesauri are stored as relational tables in the Server's database. However, a key component of the system is a parallel representation of the underlying semantic network as an in-memory structure of thesaurus concepts (corresponding to preferred terms). The structure models the hierarchical and associative interrelationships of thesaurus concepts via weighted poly-hierarchical links. Its primary purpose is real-time semantic expansion of query terms, achieved by a spreading activation semantic closeness algorithm. Queries with associated results are stored persistently using XML format data. A Visual Basic interface combines a thesaurus browser and an initial term search facility that takes into account equivalence relationships. Terms are dragged to a direct manipulation Query Builder which maintains the facet structure.

    Abstract
    Grounded on a strong belief that ontologies enhance the performance of information retrieval systems, there has been an upsurge of interest in ontologies. Its importance is identified in diverse research fields such as knowledge engineering, knowledge representation, qualitative modeling, language engineering, database design, information integration, object-oriented analysis, information retrieval and extraction, knowledge management and agent-based systems design (Guarino, 1998). While the role-played by ontologies, automatically lends a place of legitimacy for these tools, research in this area gains greater significance in the wake of various challenges faced in the contemporary digital environment. With the objective of overcoming various pitfalls associated with current search mechanisms, ontologies are increasingly used for developing efficient information retrieval systems. An indicator of research interest in the area of ontology is the Swoogle, a search engine for Semantic Web documents, terms and data found on the Web (Ding, Li et al, 2004). Given the complex nature of the digital content archived in digital libraries, ontologies can be employed for designing efficient forms of information retrieval in digital libraries. Knowledge representation assumes greater significance due to its crucial role in ontology development. These systems aid in developing intelligent information systems, wherein the notion of intelligence implies the ability of the system to find implicit consequences of its explicitly represented knowledge (Baader and Nutt, 2003). Knowledge representation formalisms such as 'Description Logics' are used to obtain explicit knowledge representation of the subject domain. These representations are developed into ontologies, which are used for developing intelligent information systems. Against this backdrop, the paper examines the use of Description Logics for conceptually modeling a chosen domain, which would be utilized for developing domain ontologies. The knowledge representation languages identified for this purpose are Web Ontology Language (OWL) and KArlsruhe ONtology (KAON) language. Drawing upon the various technical constructs in developing ontology-based information systems, the paper explains the working of the prototypes and also presents a comparative study of the two prototypes.

    Abstract
    This article gives an overview of the design and organisation of DutchESS, a Dutch information subject gateway created as a national collaborative effort of the National Library and a number of academic libraries. The combined centralised and distributed model of DutchESS is discussed, as well as its selection policy, its metadata format, classification scheme and retrieval options. Also some options for future collaboration on an international level are explored

    Abstract
    The Europeana Data Model (EDM) is a new approach towards structuring and representing data delivered to Europeana by the various contributing cultural heritage institutions. The model aims at greater expressivity and flexibility in comparison to the current Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE), which it is destined to replace. The design principles underlying the EDM are based on the core principles and best practices of the Semantic Web and Linked Data efforts to which Europeana wants to contribute. The model itself builds upon established standards like RDF(S), OAI-ORE, SKOS, and Dublin Core. It acts as a common top-level ontology which retains original data models and information perspectives while at the same time enabling interoperability. The paper elaborates on the aforementioned aspects and the design principles which drove the development of the EDM.

    Abstract
    Libraries have had web presences since the introduction of the World Wide Web. Providing access to information provided by the library has been attempted through various means throughout the years but no method has been as popular or pervasive as the uses of library gateways and portals. Development of gateways and portals in libraries has been affected by many factors many of which have been outside the direct control of libraries or librarians. Both the history of library practice in this area and these external factors have had a substantial impact on the state of library portal and gateway development today.

    Abstract
    A preliminary, purposive survey of definitions and current applications of facet analytical theory (FA) is used to develop a framework for the analysis of Websites. This set of guidelines may well serve to highlight commonalities and differences among FA applications an the Web. Rather than identifying FA as the terrain of a particular interest group, the goal is to explore current practices, uncover common misconceptions, extend understanding, and highlight developments that augment the traditional practice of FA and faceted classification (FC).

    Abstract
    Reference services have taken a central place in library and information services. They are also regarded as personalised services since in most cases a personal discussion takes place between a user and a reference librarian. Based on this, the librarian points to the sources that are considered to be most appropriate to meet the specific information need(s) of the user. Since the Web and digital libraries are meant for providing direct access to information sources and services without the intervention of human intermediaries, the pertinent question that appears is whether we need reference services in digital libraries, and, if so, how best to offer such services. Current digital libraries focus more on access to, and retrieval of, digital information, and hardly lay emphasis on the service aspects. This may have been caused by the narrower definitions of digital libraries formulated by digital library researchers. This paper looks at the current state of research in personalised information services in digital libraries. It first analyses some representative definitions of digital libraries in order to establish the need for personalised services. It then provides a brief overview of the various online reference and information services currently available on the Web. The paper also briefly reviews digital library research that specifically focuses on the personalisation of digital libraries and the provision of digital reference and information services. Finally, the paper proposes some new areas of research that may be undertaken to improve the provision of personalised information services in digital libraries.

    Abstract
    Information subject gateways provide targeted discovery services for their users, giving access to Web resources selected according to quality and subject coverage criteria. Information gateways recognise that they must collaborate on a wide range of issues relating to content to ensure continued success. This report is informed by discussion of content activities at the 1999 Imesh Workshop. The author considers the implications for subject based gateways of co-operation regarding coverage policy, creation of metadata, and provision of searching and browsing across services. Other possibilities for co-operation include working more closely with information providers, and diclosure of information in joint metadata registries
