    Abstract
    This is the first comprehensive book on hypermedia nd the WWW that icludes features of the 2nd generation systems. Definitions, history, current technology and problems, leading-edge initiatives, future applications, all these are seen as an unfolding of a millenial communication medium that is not serving but involving even the non-technical person in a very technical world. Much of the promise of hypermedia lies in its applications to education, and this receives prominence in the book. The new hypermedia system 'HyperWave' is described in detail. The book's vision, organization, and easy-to-read style make it suitable as a source for information for the practitioner and the general reader.     Abstract
    The Multimedia Information Presentation System (MIPS) will allow end users to browse multimedia information presented in a user friendly and consistent manner. In its most powerful configuration, it will allow the end user to formulate queires which are interpreted, analyzed, and dispatched by the system to heterogeneous distributed external data sources, and to view a coherent and customized presentation of the data retrieved as answers. Data are stored in, or referenced from, a set of hyperdocuments conforming to the ISO standards HyTime and SGML. The hyperdocuments constitute an information web which may be dynamically expanded to accomodate retrieved data. The web navigation structure, structure of information nodes, specification of presentation mechanisms, specification of presentation tools, and data are separable and potentially reusable for different applications, different activities within an application, or different environments. Outlines the intended functionality and the design of MIPS, with particular reference to the structure and function of the hypermedia web and the role of the knowledge base system module in its dynamic expansion

    Abstract
    This article examines searcher behavior and affective response to a hypertext-based bibliographic information retrieval system called HyperLynx for searchers with different search skills and backgrounds. Search times and number of nodes visited were recorded for five specified search queries, and views of the system were recorded for each searcher. No significant differences were found in search times or user satisfaction with the system, indicating that a hypertext-based approach to bibliographic retrieval could be appropriate for a variety of searcher experience levels

    Abstract
    Interactive dynamic maps (IDMs) help users interactively explore webs of hypermedia documents. IDMs provide automatically generated abstract graphical views at different levels of granularity. Visual cues give users a better understanding of the content of the web, which results in better navigation control and more accurate and effective expressions of queries. IDMs consist of: topic maps, which provide visual abstractions of the semantic content of a web documents and document maps, which provide visual abstractions of subsets of documents. The major contribution of this work include: automatique techniques for building maps directly from a web of documents, including extraction of semantic content and use of a spatial metaphor for generating layout and filing space, a direct manipulation interaction paradigm for exploring webs of documents, using maps and an integrated graphical query language, and the ability to use the maps themselves as documents that can be customized, stored in a library and shared among users

    Abstract
    Navigating through hyperlinks within a Web site to look for information from one of its Web pages without the support of a site map can be inefficient and ineffective. Although the content of a Web site is usually organized with an inherent structure like a topic hierarchy, which is a directed tree rooted at a Web site's homepage whose vertices and edges correspond to Web pages and hyperlinks, such a topic hierarchy is not always available to the user. In this work, we studied the problem of automatic generation of Web sites' topic hierarchies. We modeled a Web site's link structure as a weighted directed graph and proposed methods for estimating edge weights based on eight types of features and three learning algorithms, namely decision trees, naïve Bayes classifiers, and logistic regression. Three graph algorithms, namely breadth-first search, shortest-path search, and directed minimum-spanning tree, were adapted to generate the topic hierarchy based on the graph model. We have tested the model and algorithms on real Web sites. It is found that the directed minimum-spanning tree algorithm with the decision tree as the weight learning algorithm achieves the highest performance with an average accuracy of 91.9%.

    Abstract
    Fortschrittliche Informationssysteme stellen ihren Benutzern 2 wichtige Suchmethoden zur Verfügung: die gezielte (Volltext-) Suche und das Navigieren im Objektbestand mit Hilfe von Hypertext-Links. Der Grund, warum diese beiden Konzepte aber auf breiter Basis noch nicht in jedem Informationssystem Anwendung gefunden haben, ist darin zu sehen, daß der manuelle Aufbau von umfassenden Hypertext-Strukturen auf der einen Seite und von großen Thesauri, die den Erfolg von Volltextsuchen wesentlich steigern, auf der anderen Seite bislang enormen Aufwand und damit hohe Kosten verursachte. Langfristig werden Informationssysteme aber nur dann große Akzeptanz bei der Benutzerschaft erzielen, wenn sie ihre Benutzer mit diesen beiden Techniken unterstützen und wenn sie dynamisch neuen Informationsbedürfnissen anpassen können, also lernfähig sind. Für den einzelnen Benutzer ergibt sich daraus der wesentliche Vorteil, daß er von den Recherche-Erfahrungen anderer Benutzer profitieren kann. In diesem Papier stellen wir eine Lernkomponente vor, die für das Hypertextsystem 'HyperMan' an der TU München entwickelt und implementiert wurde. Wir zeigen beispielhaft, wie Volltext-Suchanfragen der HyperMan-Benutzer von der Lernkomponente untersucht werden, um Thesauruseinträge zu gewinnen. Bei der Entwicklung dieser Lerntechniken zum (automatischen) Thesaurusaufbau konnte auf Erfahrungen mit dem lernfähigen Information Retrieval System 'Tegen' zurückgegriffen werden. In dem HyperMan System werden aber nicht nur Beziehungen (Relationen) zwischen Begriffen erlernt, sondern auch zwischen Textstücken. Wir gehen daher auch darauf ein, wie aufgrund einer Analyse des Benutzerverhaltens sowohl neue Hypertext-Links erlernt als auch vorhandene Links, die zuvor von HyperMans Generierungskomponente automatisch erzeugt wurden, modifiziert werden

    Abstract
    Applies the ideas from the automatic link generation research to automatic text summarisation. Using techniques for inter-document link generation, generates intra-document links between passages of a document. Based on the intra-document linkage pattern of a text, characterises the structure of the text. Applies the knowledge of text structure to do automatic text summarisation by passage extraction. Evaluates a set of 50 summaries generated using these techniques by comparing the to paragraph extracts constructed by humans.     Abstract
    The node size that should be used in a hypermedia system is an important design issue. 3 interpretations of node size are identified: storage (physical size), window size (presentation size), and length (logical size). an experiment in which presentation size and text length are varied in a HyperCard application is described. The experiment involves student subjects performing a fact retrieval task from a reference handbook. No interaction is found between these 2 independent variables. Performance is significantly better for the longer texts, but no significant difference is found for the 2 different window sizes

    Abstract
    When the Web was invented, it was touted as a novel nonlinear medium for the written word. No longer would we be constrained by linear presentations! Hyperlinks would allow us to jump haphazardly from page to page, chapter to chapter, idea to idea! Texts would no longer need to run from beginning to end! This is misleading. A printed book is also multidimensional and potentially nonlinear. We can open it to any page, from any other page, for any reason. We can open several books at once. In fact, what makes a book special is its combination of linear structure (the order of the words) and nonlinear physicality (the bound papers). This linear/nonlinear duality is enhanced further by the index, which maps linearly sequenced pages in a nonlinear, informationally ordered structure (architecture). In truth, the online environment is crippled by an absence of linear structure. Imagine selecting a hard cover book, tearing off the covers, ripping pages into small pieces, and throwing them in a box. That box is like a computer file system, and the paper scraps are Web documents. Only one scrap can be retrieved from the box at a time, and it must be replaced before another can be accessed. Page numbers are meaningless. Global context is destroyed. And without page numbers or context, what happens to the index?

    Abstract
    Most existing hypermedia authoring systems incorporate facilities for the creation of static links between pieces of information, termed nodes. Such links usually support only browsing activities over the hypermedia web, carrying little or no information about the conceptual relationship the nodes might have. Thus indecision occurs: the reader of the hypermedia can traverse a link but has no indication what link to choose and what he might expect from the traversal. At the same time, the creation of these links requires a great effort from the author, moreover if there are certain criteria that guide linking. This paper presents a two-layered hypermedia semantic model that enriches the semantic links, and alsoprovides the means for dynamic link creation. To accomplish these objectives, we adopt the use of fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic as the mathematical framework for link characterization and dynamic link creation.     Abstract
    Explores inter record linkage relationships of a bibliographic hypertext system through the use of descriptor term co-occurrences. Using term distribution and term exhaustivity data for an existing system, develops 3 models of term co-occurrence and tests against the observed data. The developed models do not adequately model the observed co-occurrence patterns for select parts of the distribution using chi-square values. With knowledge of the structure of such a hypertext system, an appropriate model may be constructed and used as the basis for studying systems design of inter-record linkages and system navigation by users in such a hypertext system

    Abstract
    Hypertext uses a browsing rather than a searching strategy. Hypertext systems have found applications in a number of areas. They give users choice of information but this can prove a drawback. Examnines the effectiveness of hypertext as a way of retrieving information and reviews conventional information retrieval techniques. Considers previous attempts at combining information retrieval and hypertext and outlines a prototype systems developed to generate guided tours for users to direct them through hypertext to information they have requested.     Abstract
    Evaluates an adaptive hypermedia system, PUSH, and compares it to a non-adaptive variant of the same system. Based on an inferred information-seeking task, PUSH chooses what to show and what to hide in a page using a stretchtext technique, thus attempting to avoid information overload. Studies how successful the subjects were in retrieving the most relevant information, and finds that the subjects' solutions were influenced by the choice made by the adaptive system. Studies how much the adaptivity reduced the amount of actions needed, and found that subjects made substantially fewer actions in the adaptive case. A 3rd measurement was the subjects' subjective preferences for the adaptive or the non-adaptive system, where it is found that the subjects clearly preferred the adaptive system
