- Abstract
- In Zeiten zunehmend wissensintensiver Berufsbilder besteht eine große Herausforderung heutiger Unternehmen darin, die zur Unterstützung organisatorischen Handelns erforderliche Information effizient und effektiv zur Verfügung zu stellen. Eine Grundlage für die Entwicklung einer adäquaten Informationsumgebung legt dabei das umfassende Verständnis des Kontexts und Verhaltens von Mitarbeitern im Umgang mit Information. Beides unterliegt jedoch einem steten Wandel und stellt hohe Anforderungen an die Flexibilität von Arbeitsplatzkonzepten und der Gestaltung von Informationsumgebungen. In diesem Artikel wird daher die aktuelle Bedeutung und Entwicklung informationswissenschaftlicher Ansätze zur Modellierung von Informationssuchverhalten, deren Methoden, sowie zentrale Konzepte und Erkenntnisse vorgestellt. Anschließend wird die Bedeutung dieser Modelle für den Arbeitsplatz-Kontext in Zeiten zunehmend wissensintensiver Tätigkeiten untersucht. Anhand der Wandlung des primär informativ genutzten Internet zu einem partizipativen Social Web wird daraufhin erörtert, welche neuen Entwicklungen es in der Erforschung des Nutzerkontexts zu berücksichtigen gilt. Die beispielhafte Betrachtung aktueller Forschungsergebnisse auf diesem Gebiet mündet in einer Diskussion weiteren Forschungsbedarfs.

- Abstract
- A survey of Australian public library Web sites reveals that very few libraries have gone beyond establishing Web sites that provide information about their static library resources and services. Few attempts have been made to deliver a high level of interactive library service to online clients. This paper examines some of the issues that public libraries need to consider in order to rethink the way that the Web can be better used to provide interactive, real time online services. Issues include: commitment of staff and financial resources to online services; developing and maintaining Web technology skills; reclaiming the Web from IT departments; and individual effort versus collaboration.

- Abstract
- Eine Recherche im Web kann für die journalistische Recherche zielführend sein. Es müssen jedoch einige Dinge beachtet werden. So eignet sich etwa die Wikipedia mehr als Rechercheeinstieg denn als Allheilmittel. Auch sollten über die Universalsuchmaschinen hinaus die erweiterte Suche und Spezialsuchmaschinen genutzt werden. Es empfiehlt sich das Anlegen eines Rechercheprotokolls zur Unterstützung einer systematischen Recherche. Auch das Verifizieren von Quellen ist notwendig. Dieser Text bietet nach einigen - negativen wie positiven - Beispielen zu den genannten Punkten Empfehlungen für den journalistischen Umgang mit Suchmaschinen, anderen Suchwerkzeugen sowie Hinweise für strukturierte Internet-Recherchen.

- Abstract
- Die Weiten des Internet tendieren ins Unendliche - kaum etwas, was dort nicht vorhanden zu sein scheint. Google rühmt sich, dass jetzt die Suche auf über acht Milliarden Websites möglich ist und hat mit dem Einscannen der Bestände von US-amerikanischen und englischen Bibliotheken schon das nächste größere Projekt in Angriff genommen. Auch Microsoft schickt sich an, eine ernstzunehmende Konkurrenz in Sachen Internetrecherche zu werden. Hinzu kommt, dass das Internet eine immer größere Nutzung erfährt, 2004 lag diese bei 55,3 Prozent der Bevölkerung ab 14 Jahren - doch das alles heißt nicht, dass die Nutzer 3 im Gegenzug auch immer bessere Recherchefähigkeiten aufweisen. Es vergeht kein Tag, an dem im Informationsdienst von Bibliotheken nicht der Satz »Im Internet habe ich schon geguckt, dafind ich nix!« fällt. 100.000 Treffer zu einer Suchanfrage zu erhalten ist nicht die Kunst, aber fünf relevante Treffer zu erhalten, die noch dazu einer kritischen Bewertung standhalten (Stichwort »Information Literacy«), das bedarf eines professionellen Informationsvermittlers - eines Bibliothekars! Noch nie waren so viele Nutzer im Netz und zugleich so viele so unzufrieden. Wäre es nicht Aufgabe der Bibliotheken diese (potenziellen) Kunden aufzufangen, bevor sie in den Weiten des Internet verloren gehen? Dieses Auffangnetz existiert bereits - bekannt als Digital Reference Service, gebündelt durch die Funktionen, die das Web Contact Center bereit hält.

- In Canada, as in many other developed countries, the elderly are the fastest growing segment of the population (Moore & Rosenberg, 1997), and are considered to have substantial needs for human services due to the physical, psychological, emotional and social changes associated with aging (Bull, 1994; Hales-Mabry, 1993; Harel, el al., 1990; Levinson, 1996; Pelly, 1992; Tinker, 1992; Wenger, 1992). Shorter hospital stays and other cutbacks in the healthcare system have also contributed to increased need for human services. Yet, the elderly are typically counted among society's "information poor" (Childers, 1975; Nauratil, 1985). While community-based human services such as healthcare, income support, transportation, and recreation programs can help the elderly recover from illness and continue living in their own homes, research shows that they are largely unaware of existing services, that they experience difficulties in expressing their needs and negotiating the human services web, and that many go without needed help (Ontario Ministry of Culture & Communications, 1991). Surprisingly little is known, however, from empirically-based research about how seniors communicate their needs for HSI and how HSI helps them cope with daily problems. While an in-depth review of the literature on the information behaviour of the elderly is provided in Pettigrew (1997b), the literature to-date can be characterized as suffering from the same weakness identified by Zweizig and Dervin (1977) in their survey of the library literature in that it is primarily composed of use studies and user studies.

- Abstract
- It has become increasingly common for libraries to provide a reference service which operates via e-mail or through online forms. This paper compares the performance of three digital reference services available on the World Wide Web, namely, AllExperts, Ask a Librarian, and Internet Public Library (a fourth service, Ask Bob, was included initially but eventually excluded). The online digital reference/"expert" services are generally very effective; most provide an answer within three days, and include suggestions for sources of further information. Although the general response rate from all the services was good, library-based services were found to be more trustworthy since they provided the answers together with the sources.

- Abstract
- Reference services have taken a central place in library and information services. They are also regarded as personalised services since in most cases a personal discussion takes place between a user and a reference librarian. Based on this, the librarian points to the sources that are considered to be most appropriate to meet the specific information need(s) of the user. Since the Web and digital libraries are meant for providing direct access to information sources and services without the intervention of human intermediaries, the pertinent question that appears is whether we need reference services in digital libraries, and, if so, how best to offer such services. Current digital libraries focus more on access to, and retrieval of, digital information, and hardly lay emphasis on the service aspects. This may have been caused by the narrower definitions of digital libraries formulated by digital library researchers. This paper looks at the current state of research in personalised information services in digital libraries. It first analyses some representative definitions of digital libraries in order to establish the need for personalised services. It then provides a brief overview of the various online reference and information services currently available on the Web. The paper also briefly reviews digital library research that specifically focuses on the personalisation of digital libraries and the provision of digital reference and information services. Finally, the paper proposes some new areas of research that may be undertaken to improve the provision of personalised information services in digital libraries.

The topic was 'Radical redesign of reference and research', and common threads among speakers included the need for a new reference/research model that will scale with future needs, and the now common standard of round the clock service availability. Print could become a secondary medium to digital data, primarily delivered over the Internet, and that information vendors be forced to change pricing structures. - Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students. - Abstract
- The explosive growth in client server technology, and the availability and popularity of Internet based navigational tools and access services, present reference libraries with a range of opportunities to expand the quality of its services and the scope of its mission. Proposes, however, that this sudden rate of change in the underlying technological infrastructure has surpassed the ability of most libraries to identify, let alone assimilate, these opportunities properly. Examines emerging Internet based strategies for community libraries, and suggests the need for a new set of information access models in the areas of: user access and control; rights and usage tracking; cost recovery on WWW based services; Internet based interloans; self service for remote users; and community marketing via the Web

- Abstract
- Non-academic questions regarding special services, phone numbers, web-sites, library policies, current procedures, technical notices, and other pertinent local institutional information are often asked at the academic library reference desk. These frequent and urgent information requests require tools and resources to answer efficiently. Although ready reference collections at the desk provide a tool for academic information, specialized local information resources are more difficult to create and maintain. As reference desk responsibilities become increasingly complex and communication becomes more problematic, a web database to collect and manage this non-academic, local information can be very useful. At the Oregon State University, librarians in the Reference Services Management group created a custom-designed web-log bulletin board to deal with this non-academic, local information. The resulting database provides reference librarians a one-stop location for the information and makes it easier for them to update the information, via email, as conditions, procedures, and information needs change in their busy, highly computerized information commons.
