- Increasingly texts are produced as electronic documents but each document production system uses its own markup reproduce documentation in different media as they are linked only to the physical structure of the document in question. To overcome these drawbacks, information processing specialists have tried to create general languages which, by taking into account the logical structure of a document, would facilitate its exchange and dissemination in different forms. This is why the ISO has sponsored the development of the SGML which become an official standard in 1986. - The history of civilisation is inextricably bound up with the development of methods of recording and transmitting individual experience to successive generations. Collective memory becomes possible because of the development firstly of writing, then of printing. Now, with new media and methods for storing and transmitting information, and new techniques for facilitating access, collective memory refers not only to the evidence of the past, but to the collective experience of individuals in the present: in electronic systems where texts are encoded and decoded by machines, the reader is not obliged to follow an apriori linear approach, but can navigate freely and evade the confines of the original structure

- Abstract
- Classification should not be matter of imposing arbitrary structures, but a means of thinking about ways of organising collections to suit user needs. Discusses possible approaches for multimedia collections in public libraries, e.g. treating documents on all types of supports as a single entity or using centres of interest, devised to circumvent the limitations of the traditional use of decimal classification. The need to maintain awareness of local limitations is demonstrated from the example of a media centre which based collection organisation on the structure of interior space, extending over 4 levels - thus determining locations for formats such as books, records and videos. To counteract the wall effect of shelving, showcase lighting has been used but this is proving to generate excessive heat. All in all, whatever system is used, the basic necessity is to ensure that it does not create needless barriers for people wanting to use the collections

- Abstract
- The media centre at the City of Science and Industry, Paris, bases cataloguing practices on user habits, simulating searches which users have done to identify how access can be improved. In relation to the audiovisual viewer, which offers a selection of 3.500 films, this has led to including summaries and closer indexing, so that items can be retrieved by subject, not just by title as in the general catalogue. Economy of indexing can be justified as long as there is more information available from another resource. Analysis of failed searches has shown that wider subject indexing and integration of subject research and keywords would reduce noise. In the same way that physical layout and presentation of collections can help users, so should catalogue structure and organisation
