    Abstract
Fac-Back-OPAC is a faceted back up OPAC. This advanced catalog offers features that compare favorably with the traditional catalogs for today's library systems. Fac-Back-OPAC represents the convergence of two prominent trends in library tools: the decoupling of discovery tools from the traditional integrated library system and the use of readily available open source components to rapidly produce leading-edge technology for meeting patron and library needs. Built on code that was originally developed by Casey Durfee in February 2007, Fac-Back-OPAC is available for no cost under an open source license to any library that wants to offer an advanced search interface or a backup catalog for its patrons.

    Abstract
Current OPAC show their weakness in terms of ease of use and comprehension of user requests, and more generally in man/machine dialogue. Most OPAC searches are for subjects and these give the word results. Natural language processing techniques exist to reduce these difficulties. In France, natural language processing has been used to access the yellow pages (headings) of the French phone directory and the telematics services directory; examples are included. No doubt the future library systems will use these techniques to make the new OPACs really open, public, accessible and co-operative (user-friendly)

    Abstract
A survey of catalogue use in 1993 at Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed considerable dissatisfaction with the online catalogue's subject search facilities. Of those who used subject searching 64% preferred subject headings against only 2% who chose classification schedules. Library users make little use of the existing facilities for assistance and leaflets which are available in the library. It has, therefore, been decided to provide a programme of instruction in library use and to move towards a unified system of subject access to the library's catalogue

    Abstract
The use of library resources will no longer be restricted to the physical location of libraries thanks to networking technologies and standard protocols for information retrieval. These technical achievements allow users to access geographically scattered libraries but they do not ease their intellectual access. Indeed, users need a certain command of different languages to find publications whose records are written in a unique language. Multilingual facilities, including multilingual presentation and retrieval, can intellectually open the library catalogue to a wider range of international users. Describes an attempt at using multilingual resources with a view to improving user OPAC interaction through the TRANSLIB project, which provides library users with advanced tools that support multilingual access

    Abstract
Weaknesses within the system of LCSH are widely expected to be bypassed by OPACs as they open other subject access routes into collections. How LCSH perform under OPAC retrieval capabilities in direct comparison to title field subject searching is studies heuristically and quantitatively. Observed patterns of LCSH function are discussed, and conclusions about search strategy are offered

    Abstract
Online public access catalogues enable users to undertake subject searching by classification schedules, natural language, or controlled language terminology. In practice the 1st method is little used. Controlled language systems require indexers to index specifically and consistently. A comparative survey was made of indexing practices at Amsterdam and Mijmegen university libraries. On average Amsterdam assigned each document 3.5 index terms against 1.8 at Nijmegen. This discrepancy in indexing policy is the result of long-standing practices in each institution. Nijmegen has failed to utilise the advantages offered by online cataloges

    Abstract
The acronym OPAC should perhaps stand for Open, Public, Accessible and Cooperative. Looks at how the OPAC modules available in major European library systems live up to this definition. Discusses 3rd generation OPAC development areas; network access; document types and services included; document ordering and delivery; user interface; retrieval models; communication language; and record enhancements

    Abstract
Reports on a study at an elementary school in Washington, DC examining pupils' use of an OPAC. Presents this within the overall instructional environment of the school in order to open a window on the broader interaction of children, technology, curriculum, instruction and learning. Explains the methodology used in the study, the findings of the study, and notes a number of conclusions. Focuses in particular on the patterns of success and failure of children's use of the OPAC, their search strategies and the nature of their interaction with the OPAC

    Abstract
Examines the use of the Z39.50 Information Retrieval protocol for provision of access to its collections. Z39.50 offers a translation of different search engines developed by library systems suppliers and online database hosts. Traces its development and describes its abstraction and metalanguage, and the TCP/IP and OSI layer. It is being further developed in project ONE - OPAC Network in Europe, and European Union Library Plan project which began in Jan 95, of which the British Library is a partner. It aims to link national library catalogues in an open standards and telecommunications network, and to achieve interoperability by use of Z39.50. Describes the project so far, agreements made, and future developments

    Abstract
As of spring semester 2010, Georgia Southern University began using a VuFind implementation as the default access to the library catalogue on the library Web page while maintaining a secondary link to the traditional Voyager "classic" catalogue. VuFind is an open-source product that has been adopted and adapted by all the state universities and colleges in the state of Georgia. For approximately ten years, Georgia libraries have used Voyager as their catalogue, and it remains available to users as the "classic" search option. This report examines the local VuFind implementation compared to the more traditional Voyager implementation, emphasizing the differences in the searching capabilities of each.

    Abstract
Paper presented at the 14th biennal conference of IATUL, Cambridge, Mass., USA, 8-12.7.1991: new technologies and information services - evolution or revolution? Ed. by Jay K. Lucker and published by the British Library on behalf of the IATUL. The ETH-Bibliothek is the main library of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the national centre for scientific and technical literature. Mostly there is no open access for the public. The ETHICS project was initiated to run library applications on the the library's own computer. The project is conceived as a multi-library integrated system whose separate units interrelate via a central database. The main function of the system is the online public access catalogue. Describes the specifications of ETHICS including interactive communication in German and French for storing and retrieving data. The subject index is maintained in French, German and English. Discusses retrieval by title words, subject retrieval and alphabetic retrieval. Outlines future developments
