- Sein Descartes ist eine reine Literaturarbeit, er hat keine Archivfunde gemacht, auch zum Umfeld des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs kaum Historiker herangezogen, die jünger sind als Leopold von Ranke oder Veronica Wedgwood. Die Chance zur Synthese oder Popularisierung des jüngsten Forschungsstandes hat er nicht genutzt. Schultz hat ein Faible für ältere französische Philosophie, und die stärkste Qualität seines Buchs liegt in der Vermittlung von Descartes' philosophischen wie naturwissenschaftlichen Schriften. Schultz ist ein leicht lesbarer Mittler zwischen deutscher und französischer Kultur. Das Genre des Wissenschaftskrimis erfüllt sein Buch, obendrein ist es schön gesetzt und mit einigen von Descartes' eigenen Zeichnungen illustriert. Eine Frage hätte man aber doch gern in so einem dicken Buch beantwortet bekommen: Warum sollen wir Descartes 350 Jahre nach seinem Tod noch lesen? Ist mehr drin als ein nettes eskapistisches Leseabenteuer über die Zeit, als das Nachdenken noch geholfen hat und die Zweifel am Cartesianismus noch nicht so laut waren? Schultz wirft in Einleitung und Schlusssatz ein paar Brocken über den größten Philosophen am Beginn der Neuzeit" hin: Nachdem Descartes nicht ausschloss, dass ,dieses ganze über Gott bloß erdichtet ist", konstatiert Schultz hier einen frühen Tod Gottes". Descartes habe den "Weg in die Technik für Jahrhunderte" vorgezeichnet; gewissermaßen als Maschinist Gottes habe er Pflanzen, Tiere und den menschlichen Körper zu Maschinen gemacht, sie "der Überprüfbarkeit, der Kontrolle und Reparaturfähigkeit" unterworfen; seit Descartes gebe es die Spaltung in die ihrer stets sicheren Naturwissenschaften und die stets neu beginnenden Geisteswissenschaften". Leider substantiiert Schultz diese Punkte in der Darstellung selbst kaum. Descartes' Werk gilt als Beginn der philosophischen Neuzeit, auch er selbst hat sich so gesehen.

- Abstract
- Die Redundanz technischer Übertragungssysteme schützt Nachrichten vor Verstümmelung, ohne den Informationsgehalt der übertragenen Nachrichten zu erhöhen. Ein weitschweifiger Journalist erleichtert durch Vergleiche und Metaphern das Verständnis: "Anschaulichkeit' stellt sicher, daß eine Nachricht beim Leser "ankommt'; den Informationsgehalt erhöht sie damit nicht. Die Verminderung von Weitschweifigkeit führt dagegen zur Unverständlichkeit: Nachrichtendienste verschlüsseln Nachrichten durch Verminderung von Redundanz und sichern sich so, gegen das Abhören. Ähnlich vermindern Wissenschaftler die Redundanz ihrer Arbeiten, um nicht von Laien verstanden werden zu können. Für den Uneingeweihten klingen solche Kryptogramme wie Rauschen. Redundanz ist das Maß der inneren Regelmäßigkeit einer statistischen Struktur. Nachricht minus Redundanz ist Informationsgehalt. Für den Betrag der Information hat Shannon die Maßeinheit angegeben: das bit - die "basic indissoluble information unit" (nicht zu verwechseln mit der Einheit für die Darstellung von Daten mit Hilfe binärer Zeichen, dem großgeschriebenen "Bit" unserer Computer). Den Informationsgehalt einer Nachricht zu ermitteln ähnelt dem Frage-Antwort-Spiel beim "heiteren Beruferaten": Jede Ja/Nein-Antwort entspricht einem bit Information. Der "lnformationsgehalt' eines Berufs entspricht der Anzahl nötiger Fragen, ihn zu erraten - je exotischer, "interessanter" der Beruf, desto mehr bits oder Fünfmarkstücke.
