- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

- Abstract
- Bei der Analyse von Informationsströmen und -systemen mit statistischen Methoden werden die Ergebnisse gerne in Grafiken dargestellt, da diese intuitiv schneller zu erfassen sind und auch Laien ohne tiefere statistische Vorbildung eine Anschauung bekommen können. Klassisches Beispiel ist etwa die graphische Darstellung der Verluste des napoleonischen Heeres in Russland (Abb. 1). Unbeachtet bleibt dabei oft, dass trotz Einfachheit der Darstellung meist große Mengen von Daten herangezogen werden und diese dann lediglich nach wenigen Gesichtspunkten in eine Grafik projiziert werdens, was leicht auch zu Fehleinschätzungen führen kann. Es sind darum geeignete Verfahren auszuwählen, die eine adäquate und möglichst 'objektive' Interpretation ermöglichen.

- Abstract
- Das World Wide Web stellt umfangreiche Datenmengen zur Verfügung. Für den Benutzer wird es zunehmend schwieriger, diese Datenmengen zu sichten, zu bewerten und die relevanten Daten herauszufiltern. Einen Lösungsansatz für diese Problemstellung bieten Visualisierungsinstrumente, mit deren Hilfe Rechercheergebnisse nicht mehr ausschließlich über textbasierte Dokumentenlisten, sondern über Symbole, Icons oder graphische Elemente dargestellt werden. Durch geeignete Visualisierungstechniken können Informationsstrukturen in großen Datenmengen aufgezeigt werden. Informationsvisualisierung ist damit ein Instrument, um Rechercheergebnisse in einer digitalen Bibliothek zu strukturieren und relevante Daten für den Benutzer leichter auffindbar zu machen.

- Abstract
- Ausgehend von einer Diskussion der Gestaltungskonzeptionen und der Leistungsfähigkeit heutiger Volltext-Retrieval-Systeme wird ein Überblick über den Leistungsumfang des für die Aufbereitung und Präsentation von Textinformation zuständigen Systems TWRM-TOPOGRAPHIC gegeben. TWRM-TOPOGRAPHIC ist Teil eines neuartigen Informationssystems, das sich auf inhaltsorientierte Repräsentation von Volltexten stützt. Die beiden wesentlichsten Leistungsmerkmale von TWRM-TOPOGRAPHIC sind die graphische Retrievaldialogführung und die flexible, situationsgerechte Aufbereitung und Präsentation von Textwissen: Die Dialogführung erlaubt dem Benutzer die direkte Navigation in den auf dem Bildschirm graphisch dargestellten Wissensstrukturen, die Selektion dargestellter Objekte zur Formulierung einer Query sowie das Wechseln des Abstraktionsniveaus der dargestellten Textinformation. Die Aufbereitung und die Präsentation von Textwissen sind kognitiv-ergonomisch begründet und berücksichtigen sowohl die begrenzte Aufnahmekapazität der Benutzer als auch die Bedeutung der zeitlichen Anordnung von Informationseinheiten für die Wahmehmungs- und Gedächtnisleistung der Rezipienten. Textwissen wird in unterschiedlichen Abstraktionsstufen präsentiert: von einer sehr generischen Ebene über Wissensgraphen, automatisch generierten Abstracts bis zur diskursiven Form der Textpassage. Die Generierungskomponente des Systems leistet einen Beitrag zum situationsgerechten Systemverhalten dadurch, daß sie aus semantischen Text-Repräsentationsstrukturen unter Berücksichtigung textueller Wohlgeformtheitsbedingungen benutzerangepaßte Abstracts mit unterschiedlichem Themenschwerpunkt und variabler Ausführlichkeit produziert. Die Erprobung verschiedener LayoutVerfahren im Projekt TWRM-TOPOGRAPHIC wird durch ein flexibles, objektorientiert spezifiziertes User-Interface-Mangagement-System (UIMS) unterstützt, dessen Objektklassen und deren Interaktionsmöglichkeiten vorgestellt werden. Die Darstellung des Systems wird mit einem ausführlichen Dialogbeispiel abgeschlossen, das die Funktion des Interface und die Wirkung der drei zentralen Operatoren (Select, Zoom und Browse) im Retrievaldialog illustriert.

- Abstract
- Für die Klassifikation von Dokumentationssystemen wird ein Baum-Diagramm vorgeschlagen. Jeder Ast des Baum-Diagramms kennzeichnet formal ein Dokumentationssystem. Für die Ausbildung der Äste des Baum-Diagramms werden 22 verschiedene Klassifikationsgründe benannt, die jedoch nicht als eine abgeschlossene Aufzählung zu verstehen sind. Jedes dieser formalen Dokumentationssysteme kann durch Zuordnung geeigneter Themen, bzw. Unterthesen in inhaltlich unterschiedliche Dokumentationssysteme überführt werden. Mit der Aufstellung einer solchen Klassifikation wird angestrebt, Dokumentationssysteme zumindest in formaler Hinsicht vergleichen zu können.
