    Abstract
People who work in a research, academic or business environemtn often have personal information collections which are large enough to need retrieval aids. A major difference between personal information retrieval and standard information retrieval is that the items to be retrieved are often associated with events in the searcher's life and ca be retrieved by their relationship of other events as well as by content. Describes the background to evenet based retrieval and describes a prototype graphical event based retrieval system, developed at Kent University, UK, employing the hive event browser

    Abstract
Inquiries made by academic library users are more complex than they may appear. Successful information retrieval based on complex queries is a function of cataloguing, classification, and the librarian's interpretation. Explores aspects of complexitiy using a proposed query as an example

    Abstract
Describes the Reuters test collection, which at 22.173 references is significantly larger than most traditional test collections. In addition, Reuters has none of the recall calculation problems normally associated with some of the larger test collections available. Explains the method derived by D.D. Lewis to perform retrieval experiments on the Reuters collection and illustrates the use of the Reuters collection using some simple retrieval experiments that compare the performance of stemming algorithms

    Abstract
Presents a framework for the theoretical comparison of information retrieval models based on how the models decide aboutness. The framework is based on concepts emerging from the field of situation theory. So called infons and profons represent elementary information carriers which can be manipulated by unions and fusion operators. These operators allow relationships between information carriers to be established. Sets of infons form so called situations which are used to model the information born by objects such as documents. Demonstrates how an arbitrary information retrieval model can be mapped down into the framework with special functions defined for this purpose depending on the model at hand. 2 examples are given based on the Boolean retrieval and coordination level matching models. Starting from an axiomatization of aboutness, retrieval models can be compared according to which axioms they are governed by

    Abstract
Describes SIFT (Search in Free Text) an information retrieval system originally developed for administering governmental documents in Norway but which is now being applied alsewhere. SIFT handles structured information well. A library system, SIFT-BIBL, is now available. SIFT's retrieval engine and search facilities are powerful. Its user interface is limited but being imporved. An application programmer interface has been released which will allow programmers to develop their own interface. A Windows-based- client-server version is now being beta tested

    Abstract
This article examines searcher behavior and affective response to a hypertext-based bibliographic information retrieval system called HyperLynx for searchers with different search skills and backgrounds. Search times and number of nodes visited were recorded for five specified search queries, and views of the system were recorded for each searcher. No significant differences were found in search times or user satisfaction with the system, indicating that a hypertext-based approach to bibliographic retrieval could be appropriate for a variety of searcher experience levels

    Abstract
The performance of an information retrieval or text and media filtering system may be determined through analytic methods as well as by traditional simulation or experimental methods. These analytic methods can provide precise statements about expected performance. They can thus determine which of 2 similarly performing systems is superior. For both a single query terms and for a multiple query term retrieval model, a model for comparing the performance of different probabilistic retrieval methods is developed. This method may be used in computing the average search length for a query, given only knowledge of database parameter values. Describes predictive models for inverse document frequency, binary independence, and relevance feedback based retrieval and filtering. Simulation illustrate how the single term model performs and sample performance predictions are given for single term and multiple term problems

    Abstract
Reports on the design of a GUI for the Okapi 'best match' retrieval system developed at the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, UK, for online library catalogues. The X-Windows interface includes an interactive query expansion (IQE) facilty which involves the user in the selection of query terms to reformulate a search. Presents the design rationale, based on a game board metaphor, and describes the features of each of the stages of the search interaction. Reports on the early operational field trial and discusses relevant evaluation issues and objectives

    Abstract
Explains briefly what constitutes the imaging process and explains how imaging can be used in information retrieval. Proposes an approach based on the concept of: 'a term is a possible world'; which enables the exploitation of term to term relationships which are estimated using an information theoretic measure. Reports results of an evaluation exercise to compare the performance of imaging retrieval, using possible world semantics, with a benchmark and using the Cranfield 2 document collection to measure precision and recall. Initially, the performance imaging retrieval was seen to be better but statistical analysis proved that the difference was not significant. The problem with imaging retrieval lies in the amount of computations needed to be performed at run time and a later experiement investigated the possibility of reducing this amount. Notes lines of further investigation
