- Abstract
- Für Webseiten ist, wie für alle interaktiven Anwendungen vom einfachen Automaten bis zur komplexen Software, die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von zentraler Bedeutung. Allerdings wird eine sinnvolle Benutzung von Informationsangeboten im World Wide Web häufig durch "cooles Design" unnötig erschwert, weil zentrale Punkte der Benutzerfreundlichkeit (Usability) vernachlässigt werden. Durch Usability Evaluation kann die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Webseiten und damit auch die Akzeptanz bei den Benutzern verbessert werden. Ziel ist die Gestaltung von ansprechenden benutzerfreundlichen Webangeboten, die den Benutzern einen effektiven und effizienten Dialog ermöglichen. Das Buch bietet eine praxisorientierte Einführung in die Web Usability Evaluation und beschreibt die Anwendung ihrer verschiedenen Methoden.

- Abstract
- Immer mehr Menschen beziehen Wissen und Nachrichten aus dem Internet. Für viele jüngere Menschen ist der Web-Browser längst das Hauptmedium. Aller Multimedialität zum Trotz findet Information im Web nach wie vor überwiegend klassisch statt - schriftlich. Anbieter mit Qualitätsanspruch kommen also nicht umhin, sich auch mit den Gesetzen und Besonderheiten der Browser-Typografie auseinanderzusetzen. Denn eine schlichte Übersetzung klassischer Typografie-Regeln auf das Medium "Web-Browser" scheitert oft schon an banalen technischen Besonderheiten. Der Pool verfügbarer "Systemschriften" ist deprimierend klein und typografische Setzungen verkommen zu Empfehlungen, die Betrachter auch schlichtweg ablehnen können. Im Zentrum steht allerdings die Frage: Wie ist im Medium "Browser" gute Lesbarkeit herstellbar? Das vorliegende Buch ist der wohl umfassendste Überblick über den Stand der internationalen Web-Typografie-Forschung, der bislang vorgelegt wurde. Dabei wird deutlich, dass viele gern zitierte Dogmen des Webdesigns der wissenschaftlichen Hinterfragung nicht standhalten. Auch eine umfangreiche Studie des Autors förderte einige überraschende Erkenntnisse zutage. Ergänzt werden die Forschungsresultate um fundierte Überlegungen zu den Themen Wahrnehmungspsychologie, Ästhetik, Designtheorie und Usability-Forschung. Zahlreiche Abbildungen und Grafiken machen auch die theoretischeren Passagen anschaulich und nachvollziehbar.

- Abstract
- Terminologieprobleme spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Beutzung von Softwaredokumentationen in gedruckter und elektronischer Form. Vor allem beim Zugriff auf Hilfeinformationen und bei der Umsetzung von Hilfeanweisungen treten terminologiebedingte Schwierigkeiten auf, die die Arbeit mit Software erschweren und ihre Benutzerfreundlichkeit verringern. Hilfeagenten könnten helfen, die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Softwaredokumentationen zu verbessern. In einer Usability-Studie wurde in Benutzertests mit lautem Denken untersucht, wie sich terminologiebedingte Probleme auf die Arbeit mit dem Hilfeagenten Karl Klammer von Microsoft Office 97 auswirken und wie sie die Benutzerfreundlichkeit der Online-Dokumentation verringern

Dieses Versprechen lösen Angie Radtke und Michael Charlier mit einer DemoWeb-Site für die fiktive Gemeinde BadSeendorf (Internet, URL http://www.badseendorf.de) ein. Dort werden einander zwei Versionen gegenübergestellt, wobei der Ausgangspunkt ein barrierebehaftetes Design ist, das durch eine barrierearme Version ersetzt wird. Diese beiden Beispiele wären für sich genommen bereits sehr hilfreich bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Barrierefreiheit. In Kombination mit dem zugehörigen Buch haben Radtke und Charlier eine umfassende Einführung geschaffen, die sowohl für die eigenständige Einarbeitung in die Thematik als auch für die Verwendung in der Lehre sehr geeignet ist. In einem knappen theoretisch ausgerichteten Grundlagenteil werden Fragen behandelt wie beispielsweise was Barrierefreiheit ist und wem sie nützt, warum Zugänglichkeit und ansprechendes Design kein Widerspruch sind und welche gesetzlichen Vorgaben gelten. Im Mittelpunkt des umfangreichen Praxisteils steht die genannte Web-Site der fiktiven Gemeinde Bad-Seendorf. Ausgehend von dem barrierebehafteten Design werden an konkreten Beispielen die Probleme bestimmter Nutzergruppen analysiert, zu denen neben den üblicherweise dargestellten Betroffenen auch die Altersgruppe 50plus zählt, die häufig vernachlässigt wird. Weiterhin wird in einzelnen Kapiteln eine Analyse von Barrieren durchgeführt, sowie Maßnahmen zur gezielten Vermeidung von Zugangsblockaden und Zugangserschwernissen aufgezeigt, wobei auch auf multimediale Inhalte und Sonderfälle wie PDF, Flash, und Videos in Deutscher Gebärdensprache eingegangen wird. Eine kurze Beschreibung des Einsatzes von Content-Management-Systemen für barrierefreie Web-Angebote legt den Schwerpunkt auf die Systeme Joomla! und TYPO3.
Insgesamt zeichnet sich die Kombination von Buch und Web-Site durch einen hohen Praxisbezug aus. Die Texte sind leicht zu lesen, die Sprache ist einfach und verständlich. Zahlreiche farbliche und grafisch gestaltete Randnotizen enthalten Verweise und Erläuterungen und stellen Bezüge her, sowohl zu den Beispielen als auch zu den einzelnen Prüfpunkten der Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung (BITV). In den Text integrierte Abbildungen sowie Hinweise auf Benutzungsprobleme für Menschen mit Behinderungen und Testmöglichkeiten machen die Problematik von Barrieren deutlich, auch für Leser, welche die Vorteile einer barrierearmen Gestaltung von Web-Sites verstehen wollen, ohne sich auf die Ebene des Quellcodes begeben zu müssen, wobei die Beispiele durchaus eine tiefergehende Auseinandersetzung mit der Programmierung erlauben."

- Abstract
- In unserem Retrievaltest von Suchwerkzeugen im World Wide Web (Password 11/2000) schnitt die Suchmaschine Google am besten ab. Im Vergleich zu anderen Search Engines setzt Google kaum auf Informationslinguistik, sondern auf Algorithmen, die sich aus den Besonderheiten der Web-Dokumente ableiten lassen. Kernstück der informationsstatistischen Technik ist das "PageRank"- Verfahren (benannt nach dem Entwickler Larry Page), das aus der Hypertextstruktur des Web die "Popularität" von Seiten anhand ihrer ein- und ausgehenden Links berechnet. Google besticht durch das Angebot intuitiv verstehbarer Suchbildschirme sowie durch einige sehr nützliche "Kleinigkeiten" wie die Angabe des Rangs einer Seite, Highlighting, Suchen in der Seite, Suchen innerhalb eines Suchergebnisses usw., alles verstaut in einer eigenen Befehlsleiste innerhalb des Browsers. Ähnlich wie RealNames bietet Google mit dem Produkt "AdWords" den Aufkauf von Suchtermen an. Nach einer Reihe von nunmehr vier Password-Artikeln über InternetSuchwerkzeugen im Vergleich wollen wir abschließend zu einer Bewertung kommen. Wie ist der Stand der Technik bei Directories und Search Engines aus informationswissenschaftlicher Sicht einzuschätzen? Werden die "typischen" Internetnutzer, die ja in der Regel keine Information Professionals sind, adäquat bedient? Und können auch Informationsfachleute von den Suchwerkzeugen profitieren?
